Well, I mean, Peat is a freak. Physically speaking. Basically every reporter who's seen him in person has taken to Twitter to say exactly that. Obviously being a good football player is about more than that, though.

Harbaugh was also prone to comparing relatively unsuccessful players to high-quality ones--I believe he compared Blake Lueders to Brian Urlacher on Signing Day 2010. Lueders has matured into a solid backup--at OLB--but hardly someone worthy of being compared to Urlacher.

Re: 2012 pre-season thread - fullers - 08-10-2012

He is injured. Wouldn't be surprised if he were to redshirt. He's going to stay at OLB. No reason to move him to the inside.

The Chron (in an article primarily about the strength of the incoming OL class), says Leuders is likely to redishirt this year.  Fitzgerald also comes out and basically says that he thinks Garnett will emerge as the replacement for DeCastro unless Danser or Wilkes really make a brobdingnagian jump.  But I wonder if that will be at the start of the year, or (if it happens), if Garnett will gradually move into the starting spot as he gets a better grasp on the offense?  My guess would be the latter.

Whether they start or not, this incoming class of OL give Stanford such increadible depth, which is necessary to success over the long run of a tough season.  Maybe Austin wins the OT spot, but should he have to miss some time, it just gives the guys who are likely the long-term starters more opportunities to gain experience.  I know the debate about who will start or not is the grist for these discussions, but at one level I'm just excited about the ability of the team to withstand the inevitable injuries that come with the season.

"Vibe I get from Stanford contacts past 48 hrs: Josh Nunes slightly ahead in QB competition."

Re: 2012 pre-season thread - washingtonismoney - 08-11-2012

Dave Fowkes' is the first practice report to roll out via Twitter.

Here's what he said:
Brendon Austin--held his own.
Henry Anderson--solid at DL, length a positive
Vaughters--outstanding
Wayne Lyons--great!
Terrence Brown--good coverage skills
Kodi Whitfield--impressed at WR

The not as good:
Neither QB distinguished; Nottingham still offers more in deep passing game.

Here's the most interesting thing to watch with this team over the next two to three years. Aside from a handful of four-star players, Stanford's recent run has been fueled by players other schools could have had if they had wanted them. The idea has always been that Stanford's two- and three-star prospects have done well because they're better kids -- smarter, with stronger work ethics -- so they're able to make more any athletic deficiencies. Now that the coaches have been able to recruit four- and five-star players that are presumably just as smart and willing to work just as hard as their predecessors, will they be even better than their predecessors?

Shaw is fond of saying that recruiting kids to Stanford is about getting great kids, putting them in the same locker room, and watching what they can become together. Now we'll all get to see what happens when those great kids are also elite-level football players. I can't wait to find out.

Here's a great free article on Rivals, focusing on Barry J. Sanders but also talking some about the other running backs and what the expected pecking order might be.

http://stanford.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1395317

Also, in another article ($) there today, Shaw confirms that Leuders will be redshirted. There's also some other good stuff there, including this bit about the tight ends:

Quote:Luke Kaumatule made some plays today," Shaw said. "He took a long one for a touchdown. It's just crazy to see big guys like that, to see Levine and him at over 6-foot-7 running as well as they do. He took one about 40 yards for a touchdown.

Re: 2012 pre-season thread - washingtonismoney - 08-11-2012

This article from the Mercury helpfully shares the factoid that--if you're not aware--Andrew Luck is gone and there's a quarterback competition on: http://www.mercurynews.com/stanford-cardinal/ci_21291995/stanford-football-three-man-race-quarterback-postion?source=rss&cid=dlvr.it

Sarcasm aside, the article's new, helpful information can be distilled more-or-less to one sentence: Kevin Hogan is close to making the quarterback competition a three-way derby. Shaw:

Quote:"Kevin Hogan is doing a great job of making it a three-man race," Shaw said. "I wouldn't say that he's quite there yet. But he's not too far behind. He's making it more cloudy, which is good."

This makes me less confident about the QBs.

And then here are Fowkes's written-up notes: http://www.examiner.com/article/stanford-football-practice-notes

Fowkes' notes are so much better than the Mercury, it's really incredible.

Re: 2012 pre-season thread - ChicagoCard - 08-11-2012

When people talk of Hogan being a superior athlete, are they really just talking about his running ability? I wonder why just a 3-star recruit when he apparently has a strong arm in addition to his running ability, not to mention his size.

Saw this rumor from last year having him wanting to transfer...

http://dc.thesportsfannetwork.com/forums/thread/12224-kevin-hogan-transferring-from-stanford/

meaningless now but makes the point of how much competition there is at the QB position, as much as just about anywhere else.

Generally athletic in QB-speak means "a runner," except when it means "black dude."

As to Hogan as a recruit. 3-star for Rivals and ESPN, 4-star for Scout. Curiously, both Scout and Rivals agree he was the #15 QB for his class. Not a lot of notable offers; maybe Clemson is his second-best offer, which isn't bad at all. Of course, it's an open question as to why they thought this was the case. In spring we heard his decision making wasn't the best--perhaps this was the issue back in high school.

Re: 2012 pre-season thread - socalstanfan1 - 08-11-2012

Interesting couple of names emerging from these recent reports:  Kevin Hogan, Luke Kaumatule, and Remound Wright.  I think Wright is really intriguing.  We hadn't heard much of anything about him since he stepped on campus, and my sense was that he was dealing with some injuries.  All the buzz in the spring was about Ricky Seale standing out and Kelsey Young.  Now, in both the interview with Sanford and the Fowlkes article, Wright seems to be in the mix.  Sanford saying that Seale is "instinctive" and needs to work on pass protection makes me wonder if "instinctive" is a euphemism for a bit undisciplined.  In any case, while the majority of carries right now are ticketed for Taylor and Wilkerson, I'm looking forward to seeing if Wright can climb up the depth chart.

Regarding Fowlkes' observation that Vaughters and Skov were playing together with the second team at the open practice: could it be that the coaches are pairing the LBs that they expect to play together in the season, and as Skov rounds into full health/comfort on the field that we will see a Vaughters/Skov starting pair on the inside?  As impressed as I was with both Tarpley and Lancaster last year, if Fowlkes was not exaggerating too much in dubbing Vaughters "Skov II", then the Skov/Vaughters pair could be truely scary.  Depth at LB, even minus Leuders on the outside, seems really good.

Kaumatule starting to emerge as a legit TE prospect?  Give him a year to learn the position, see him one year from now.

Honestly, that thread should be held up as the poster-child for warnings about intenet rumors.  In retrospect, looks like a bunch of UV fans projecting their wishful thinking onto the internet.

Re: 2012 pre-season thread - yvonne - 08-12-2012

You know what's interesting about that list in the second paragraph of Fitzgerald's story?

The last two quarterbacks to lead us to the Rose Bowl are not on that list. Todd Husak was not the quarterback that Steve Stenstrom was, but Steve Stenstrom's team's best bowl was the Blockbuster Bowl. Don Bunce was not the quarterback his predecessor, Jim Plunkett was, but Bunce still managed to help his team get to the Rose Bowl.

This year's quarterback will not be the quarterback Andrew Luck was, but the team can still do something special because football is not a one-man sport.
