Here's a link to a Bootleg story on the Cup:

http://auburn.scout.com/2/1298326.html

Much of the content parallels what we have collectively posted here already, but all in all, a good read.

Why does it have 'auburn' in the address? Are we building a church if people read it?

Not sure why the Auburn Scout site would have a Stanford story, but that's where I found the article.

Re: Update on Director's Cup - FarmBoy - 06-12-2013

So, is it official that we "retain" The Cup?

Re: Update on Director's Cup - yvonne - 06-12-2013

Final official tabulation will be on the 27th or 28th when baseball is added.

Until they publish the final standings it is unofficial that we have retained the Cup.

However the only remaining scoring opportunity is baseball and the 100 points available would not move any of the eight remaining schools ahead of Stanford.

In the unlikely event that UCLA gets past the LSU Tigers and wins the College World Series, my back of the envelope math still leaves them at least 45 points behind the Cardinal.

Geaux Cardinal!

Re: Update on Director's Cup - Viking_Guy - 06-12-2013

Off-topic, the "Anyone But Stanford" Capitol One Cup standings have Duke winning the men's side of things and North Carolina winning the women's.  How did North Carolina beat Stanford?

The ABS Cup awards points in two categories: B Sports are worth 3 times as many points as A sports.  It also only counts the top-10 in each sport, and often times bases results on final POLLS, rather than, you know, national championships.

The B-level sports seem natural: football and women's volleyball paired with soccer in the fall, basketball in the winter, track and field and softball/baseball in the spring...  and then there's lacrosse.

The difference between Stanford and the Tar Heels?  Stanford won a national championship in women's tennis.  North Carolina won one in women's lacrosse.  Stanford's was worth 20 points.  North Carolina's was worth 60.  Stanford making the sweet 16 of women's lacrosse didn't matter; they weren't in the top-10 of the final poll.

What kind of hold does lacrosse have over ESPN? Robbie?

Anyone but Stanford.

Giving extra weight to lacrosse is ridiculous, of course. But ESPN shows lacrosse, and this award is all about promoting ESPN.

Re: Update on Director's Cup - 82 Card - 06-12-2013

The following maps illustrate why lacross is a major sport in the ESPN Cup:

What other sport can compete in proximity to Bristol?

Re: Update on Director's Cup - Roberton3 - 06-12-2013

Capital One's headquarters is in Virginia, which is also a big lacrosse state.

Although the major advertiser probably has some say, the thing is a creation of ESPN.

Rowing, to a certain extent.  But rowing is probably too "boring."

I thought Tiger Dad was an acceptable male form of Tiger Mom ;)

Premed ChemE...on a rowing scholarship.  Now there's some torture for you.  Or go one better and do premed ElecE.  /shudder

Re: Update on Director's Cup - pincemob - 06-13-2013

In northern california, lacrosse is largely cannibalizing baseball, not football.  Many football players play and excel at lacrosse which is a spring sport.  Younger kids seem drawn to the uniforms and I think for parents it is easier to watch compared to baseball which requires a lot of patience.

Re: Update on Director's Cup - Kathy - 06-13-2013

Blasphemy! Nothing beats watching baseball on a spring or summer evening.

Re: Update on Director's Cup - BigEasyCard - 06-14-2013

The June 14 release out this morning declares Stanford the winner with 1261.25 points.

Florida's total is listed as 1219.75 for a margin of 41.5 points.  That's about double the margin we have figured here.  I'm guessing that the difference is that the current numbers don't yet include Florida's 25 Cup points for baseball.  Adding in the baseball points, the final margin should be 16.5 points.

One Cup scoring question has been resolved.  In men's Golf, Florida earned 49 points for 25th place.  Stanford apparently shared 38th place with five other schools, earning 33.5 points (one sixth of the available points for places 38 through 43).

Geaux Cardinal!

Re: Update on Director's Cup - FarmBoy - 06-14-2013

I found this mention in the release interesting:

Quote:The SEC now leads all conferences with three institutions in the top 10 – Florida (2nd), Texas A&M (6th) and Georgia (9th).

Are they just pimping themselves to the SEC to make the DC more relevant to fans who mostly care about football? Or do they historically mention the relative conference performance?

If this quote from the Final Fall 2012 press release is any indication, singling out the conference with the most Top 10 schools is standard:

"The Pac-12 now leads all conferences with three institutions in the top 10 – Stanford (1st), Oregon (6th) and UCLA (7th)."

Re: Update on Director's Cup - Treebound - 06-14-2013

As a big baseball fan, I hate to admit that Lax and Wopo are weakening baseball out here in the Bay Area.  The pads, contact and sticks of Lax appeal to the boys and the games are exciting to watch.  I'm a long time little league coach and my youngest is currently playing both sports, but that won't last long (he's 8).  In working through Little League with my oldest son, it became increasingly petty and political.    The Board put its head in the sand on a number of issues and the league started losing players and families to lacrosse.  MLB, MLBAM and teams like the Yankees (with their ridiculous pricing) have only made the problems worse.    As much as I hate to admit it, I think the entire sport is in decline with the younger generation.    We live 3 miles from campus and didn't make Sunken Diamond for the first time in years....granted, I thought we would be hosting the regionals....Argh!!!
