Take away the football team and would anyone talk about them?

yes, as much as anyone would talk about stanford if you took away your football team.. college football is the most popular ncaa sport, its the reason we hear about most universities... i dont see many headlines about stanford baseball, but i know they have a respectable program, but since i dont hear about them, does that mean stanford is only a football factory?

There are other things besides sports that one could talk about a university. Nobel prize winners, Rhodes scholars, companies founded by alums of the university... That sort of thing. The fact that you don't seem to think those are important reinforces the point you are trying to refute.

Come on, let's not get carried away here.
U.-N.-D. is not known for a hunchback, it's named after a different place that is known for a hunchback.

Other people have this covered pretty well, but the point is that sports coverage is not the only kind of coverage that exists. If you think that Stanford is only well known because of its football program, well, I guess you weren't paying attention during most of our history when we sucked ass and were utterly irrelevant.

The last question has to be a lapse from reality. Stanford is known WORLDWIDE. the University of Dead Fake Girlfriends is known for a hunchback.
You obviously only read topics concerning college sports if you believe that to be true. Here is a hint: College sports writers particularly college sports writers will cater to the largest fan bases to ensure readership and will occassionaly venture outside of that formula if something is truly news worthy. Case and point - Michigan has sucked for several years now but still receive plenty of media attention. You will see stories like "When will Michigan return to respectability?" and endless coaching search stories...you wont see the same attention going towards Baylor if they fall off their perch.
Btw how many Director's Cups have we earned? Troll on...

Um, baseball not a good choice for comparison. Pitcher Mark Appel was the #1 choice in the professional baseball draft last year.
I still think ND and Stanford are well matched for the upcoming game. ND has home field advantage (they've won 11 of 14 games with us there) and weather could be a factor (possible showers and wind). 21-20 Stanford win.
I appreciate NDIrish joining us -- makes the discussion much more interesting and lively.
As an aside, last night I was trolling a ND site where a Domer fan accused us of being a "dirty team", so there's obviously no love lost between the two fan bases. Hogan needs to play his best game of the year on Saturday.

Not trying to say that at all, but also saying that is not the only thing ND is known for. On a day to day basis, in the regular news is stanford in it? usually not, is ND in it, usually not. In the sporting news, both are covered on a regular basis. So just saying that both are respected for football and outside.Â

I grew up in the Midwest. I don't have a lot of childhood memories, but one of them is leaving Mass early with my dad so that we could rush home to watch Notre Dame football highlights with Lindsey Nelson.
Growing up a Roman Catholic in the 1970s, there was an undeniable mythos about Notre Dame. But, for me, cracks in the ND armor first appeared about 20 years ago, with "Under the Tarnished Dome." Sure, the defenders of the faith came out in full force and explained away every alleged discretion and impropriety or, if unable to do so, attacked the accusers. But I've come to the conclusion that ND is not above reproach and is, in fact, no better--and no worse--than many other schools that consider their football program to be an integral part of the school's traditions and history.
I still cheer for Notre Dame against all schools except for Stanford, but the dome is indeed tarnished and Brian Kelly has not really done anything to restore the luster (easy now, Cowboy Indian).

BTW a couple of Stanford students invented Google when they were at Stanford. I'm trying to think of something ND invented and the only things that come to mind are a bunch of myths related to your football factory.

Well, it's known worldwide, ranked
247 worldwide in the World University Rankings, which is a pretty far cry from 7, no matter what you think of the ranking system. I'd venture your average European hasn't heard of Notre Dame any more than the average American has heard of the University of East Anglia.

once again, yes, world wide stanford is ranked higher, (rankings i saw had us in the top 100, but whatever, doesnt matter), but because we arent 7, makes us a football factory? They would survive without football, and pass on recruits who can't get in, same way stanford would.Â

O wow, i had a typo, while rushing in a post in between things, thank you, you genius amount simple men, i am sure you have never had one, and that one typo proves without a doubt that the University of Notre Dame has a terrible academic reputation. POINT MADE, CASE CLOSED, thank you.

Please, your writing does not buttress your contention that Notre Dame is a good academic school. I sincerely hope you are not an alumnus. I wouldn't put Notre Dame on the level of FSU or NC. I think the more apt comparison, given the levels of sanctimony, academic rigor, and relative position of football in the eyes of the school and local law enforcement, is Penn State.
Re: ND-Stanford -

This game ties me into knots each year because beating ND means so much to me. Man do I want Stanford to beat these guys. As I said in a separate thread, ND is on a trajectory that could put them into the playoff. They must be stopped NOW.
That said, I have been to South Bend twice to watch Stanford play and have really enjoyed the experience. The fans have been hospitable. Very respectful of the visitors wearing a different color (which is 180 degrees opposite what you will see in Berkeley). NDI, if you attend a game in Palo Alto, I hope that you will be treated similarly.
Re: the game. I think it comes down to one thing - Kevin Hogan's performance. The team's success (or lack of success) this season will depend on him. The defense is going to be stout and should be able to keep Stanford in the game even against a talented offense. Can Stanford's offense score enough points to win? The running game is not capable of carrying the team as it has done in the past. That puts the burden on the QB. I was pleased to see the OL provide Hogan with good protection vs. UW. UW had the top 2 players in the country in sacks and the OL mostly kept them at bay. Hogan had time and good sight lines. But his decisionmaking was very questionable. He was late in delivering the ball at times. He threw to receivers who were well covered and missed others who were wide open. He locked onto receivers. He is elusive and did a great job extending plays and getting yards with his legs. He has the experience, size and athletic ability to get the job done. The raw material is there. But he has got to make it happen throwing the ball. Personally, I am not confident right now. I hope to have more cause for optimism after Saturday.Â

I think if you took a survey of fanbases accross the country, most would agree. I don't pay to watch them take a test in the Chemistry class. I don't pay to cheer them on while they study. I pay to watch them play on saturday. And when they play, I hope they win. Do I like it when theres hoaxes and student video guys dying and academic investigations? No. It sucks. But that stuff happens. I'd love for every kid to get a 4.0 and then have the team win the National Championship, but that will never happen. My point is, you can argue until you're blue in the face about academic standards and which kids could get in here or there.
Let it be known, I like David Shaw..dude is a great coach and runs a great program. Saying that, if BK were to leave or get fired, I'd love for ND to pursue Shaw. But, ND is the better team right now. Stanford should be (yes, that was a brutal call against SC) undefeated. But ND is still better across the board. Better QB, better receivers (say hello to Will Fuller, who is better than Nelson Agholor) and has the defense to win these types of games. And if it comes down to special teams, Kyle Brindza will kick in the NFL. ND 27 Stanford 20
Question for you. If Notre Dame is the better team, why is Stanford favored by ~ 2 points at Notre Dame> Discounting the home field advantage, that suggests Vegas oddsmakers see Stanford as a ~ 5.5 point favorite on a neutral field. These are people who put their money where their mouth is.
And don't even get me started about your attitude towards your university and athletics. That right there sums up the difference between our fanbases.
