Sounds pretty spot on.

Back to the original topic (sorta)...

This is the band's first performance after being banned in 2006 basically thumbing their nose at the idea of being a "proper" traditional marching band. Audio quality is very good!

I wrote this show! After a year of not being allowed to write shows! It was conceived in Theta Chi, over a pitcher (for some reason) of a beverage traditionally served at the Kentucky Derby.

I just started the video, but isn't that the song that the Faber marching band was playing before the Deltas took it to them?

Re: LSJUMB won't be going to away games for a year - jacketree - 05-18-2015

No, not a marching jazz band.  I think it was actually called "Stage Band", and while I was in the JV equivalent (we were Stage Band II - I could not break into Stage Band I's trumpet section, which was populated by far better players including a guy who went to Julliard and a guy who went to Eastman), it was a lot of fun.  Mostly big band and Broadway stuff to help out the drama club, but I did get to play the Lee Morgan lead in our version of Moanin' without totally f'ing it up.

My high school had two symphonic bands, a full orchestra and two jazz bands. Everyone who played percussion or a wind instrument marched.  Unless you twirled a flag or rifle.  We were very good.  Our shows mixed Dvarak, Mahler, Copeland, Holst, Bernstein and Tchaikovsky in with the Allman Brothers and Commodores. Our "West Side Story" show was epic.  The Julliard-bound trumpeter's solo on "Maria" was insanely good.

So I thought I was really into it, took my trumpet on the plane with me to ATL and joined Tech's band.  It was a fun road trip to Knoxville and all but they weren't serious about the music, neither was I at this point; and I spent the next three seasons drinking rum and cokes with my buddies in the Upper East wearing nothing but shorts, flip flops and a tie. (Wearing a tie to a football game ala the SAEs or Betas was a very Southern tradition, but are khakis and a button down really necessary on a hot Georgia afternoon?) Tech's band wasn't great when I was there, but they never resorted to flinging crap at opposing fans.  We left that to UVA's band.  They first rolled in to town on a crisp Autumn Saturday, welcomed Tech to the ACC and just eviscerated the University of Georgia in their show. Crowd went nuts.  That's how its done.  (For those who don't know, UVA's band finally crossed a line that shall not be crossed with a script about inbred West Virginians and were dismantled by the university.  I think in all likelihood it is just a matter of time for LSJUMB to meet the same fate.)

I was at that 1997 Irish game and went with a co-worker who graduated from SCU after transferring from ND. Loved the school far more than the weather. He had a sense of humor and didn't say too much (loved the Riverdance skit) until the band trashed Irish culture with something about all the Irish know how to do is fight and starve.  Can't do that.  Perhaps coincidentally, or perhaps not - karma is a bitch; Stanford lost their remaining games that season save the 100th Big Game.

I know part of their schtick is to be infamous through controversy (if you can't be good, be on probation I guess), but if they went away for good I could live with it.  (A beer garden would solve all halftime problems, but I can amuse myself for half an hour without the incomparable whatever.) They are generally pretty terrible musically as a group and if I was that into Triumph the Insult Dog style humor, well, I'd watch Conan. (It was Conan right?) Stanford will never again field a traditional band and I don't think they could pull off a really good show band either.  So as an old marching aficionado, I just hope that Stanford gets a home and home with a Texas A&M, Ohio State or Jackson State. Heck even good old Atlanta A&T....

P.S.  Not that harsh a punishment and isn't some of what they are accused of (controlled substance use) actually felonious?

P.P.S.  If they do a tribute to Felonious Funk next year, I will rethink my position.

Re: LSJUMB won't be going to away games for a year - Treebound - 05-18-2015

I'm with you Ferrari.    Those of us that were Stanford undergrads get (to a point) the LSJUMB and most of us had friends that were in the band.  Most grad students wouldn't know what LSJUMB means, let alone get the band and they clearly would not have had friends on the field.  OSU, Kal and others can keep their goose stepping types.  We have a small school of very independent thinkers and marching in line is something that most would not want to spend drill and kill time repeating.  Good for them and I think that's a great and productive decision.

Please Note, there are some great musicians in the band.  Some that turned down some top music schools.  It's a student run organization of college students - bright college students blowing off steam.  If you want great music, you can go listen to many of the same musicians play in the symphony at Bing or in the Jazz band.

"Oh these Irish, why do they fight?!"  Oy! Ziga Zaga...and Come Join the Band!

Believe it or not, there was a time that grad students were allowed to live among undergrads. They coexisted together in the Manzanita Park trailers, in Mirielees, and in the co-ops. One of my housemates was part of the great trouser drop of 1986.

Very well done and thanks for letting us know you produced it! This show is definitely one of my favorites.

Do you happen to have other shows recorded and available for us to view?

My older son - about to graduate HS - still talks about "Everything Is OK At This Moment" as one of his favorite band moments!

Awesome!  That's one I definitely remember, especially the "Spirit of Spirit of Troy" part.

Just a few comments:

1.  Cardinal Coop, nice show.  The "little things" were quite clever, like the Dollies doing absolutely nothing of note in their "dance" routines during the Good LSJUMB Music;

2.  Can't help but be amused by smattering of applause from "shady siders" at outset of show, thinking that maybe . . . just maybe . . . their wish had come true;

3.  The line in script about LSJUMB trying to "reestablish some threshold of human decency" (or something along those lines) was quite amusing; and

4.  That may have been near nadir of LSJUMB participants - it looked like about 70 folks were on the field.  That is about 1/2 the "144" figure that we had back in the day (heck, there were tryouts for trumps my frosh year).  And make no mistake, numbers dramatically impact "the sound."  That's why I like band reunion games - the LSJUMB is about double its usual size and the sound (even with rusty participants) is much better than usual.  [I don't play at reunions - think only did at 5-year - so I can comment on sound from the stands].  Think band has been over 100 for several years now, but am not sure on this point.  It matters, irrespective of what you think about maturity, messaging, etc. of LSJUMB.

I believe the show was done during a preseason game (as it was the first the band was back, and I think that was one of the stupid years we had multiple home games before school started), so many of the undergrads were not around.  It was mostly alums and local undergrads/grad students.  Actually makes it a little more impressive it wasn't a total disaster, seeing as there was limited field rehearsal time since most people playing had jobs of some sort.

Looking back at our schedule it was for the Sept 15 home game vs SJSU, so probably a week or two before most students showed up.  Although the band was small at the time, thanks in no small part to five years of Buddy and Walt.

Reminded me of the years I was there when we would do the imitate S-C. band every year at Stanford and they would do the imitate LSJUMB at the coliseum. Difference was that was the most fun they had all year and our biggest pain in the ass.

Actually during some of the days we approached 200. Though I'm not certain you were around my junior year, that year we had to go digging for every old style jacket as we had expanded well beyond the traditional 12 ranks of 12.

One of my best friends played tuba in the S C marching band, and told me that they loved to do the LSJUMB countermarch.

Our first win in the new stadium, coincidentally.

Ha, ha. I immediately thought of a scene from one of my favorite watch it a thousand times on Comcast movies.

Ricky: “With all due respect, Mr. Dennit, I had no idea you’d gotten experimental surgery to have your balls removed.”

Dennit: “What did you just say to me?”

Ricky: “What? I said with all due respect!”

Dennit: “Just because you say that doesn’t mean you get to say whatever you want to say to me!”

Ricky: “It sure as hell does!”

Dennit: “No, it doesn’t–”

Sorry that I'm late to the conversation. I was actually on the field, speaking with the SJSU band director, during the performance that has been linked to. Knowing what the script called for, I could do nothing but hold my laughter when the SJSU director turned to to me, and said something to the effect of, "This is great. They've turned into a real marching band. They're not going to ***** this up, are they?" I may have responded with something along the lines of, "Let's just see." While I don't typically agree with the band's actions, this was one of the funnier interactions I had with the band and their actions.

The director was disappointed, although not surprised. It was quite comical, to say the least.
