Re: Preview thread (media) - Rally - 08-10-2015

For team with a hopelessly inexperienced defense, no true power runner, a mediocre quarterback and a suddenly middling coach we seem to be getting plenty of respect nationally. My, how things have changed.

Not too many coaches with a better record.

You've basically got # 1 Stoops, #2 Shaw then a bunch of losers.  Time will, as they say, tell.

In the article you can sort by win career %.  The guys above Shaw are Helfrich (#1, but a very small sample size), Urban, Jimbo Fisher (also a smaller sample size than Shaw), and Stoops.  When you sort by "Current %" Saban and Miles are also above Shaw.  Interestingly, in both cases the top 10 has more Pac-12 coaches than any other conference.  Mora is slightly below Shaw (again smaller sample size), giving the Pac-12 three in the career list, and in the "current %" rank Sark is also top-10 (granted, that's because he's 3-2).  Interesting that all the guys around the same win % as Shaw in conference are more recent hires.

What's not to LOVE about the Rector interview?!?
Thanks for posting.

Hard to contain enthusiasm for this upcoming season.  Would love to see the Industrial Sized Can of WhoopAzz in Evanston, but I'll take any kind of W.

That parallels an article by Stuart Mandel (each link the other).
http://www.foxsports.com/college-football/story/oregon-ducks-stanford-cardinal-arizona-state-sun-devils-pac-12-picks-predictions-2015-081215

It would appear that both Feldman and Mandel predict the domers to beat both S.-C. and Stanford - or at least both predict an OOC loss for each team with the domers the largest challenge for each (in fact S.-C.'s other OOC games are Arkansas State and Idaho).

It seems a little gimmicky that Mandel picks ASU to beat Oregon at Tempe during the season but picks Oregon to beat ASU at Tempe for the conference championship. The change doesn't appear to be based upon anything in particular.

Re: Preview thread (media) - ChicagoCard - 08-12-2015

One speculation or calculation they have talked of is the idea that by the second half of the season Vernon Adams might have established himself.

ASU and Oregon don't play until 9 games into the season, which is pretty far along. Nevertheless, the development of Adams might be what he is thinking about, but Mandel makes no such commentary in the article.
All he says is,
"I have ASU winning the first matchup, the 9-3 Ducks topping the 10-2 Sun Devils in the league title game."
Along with an earlier comment that,
" whoever wins the job -- Jeff Lockie or Eastern Washington transfer Vernon Adams -- does not need to replicate Mariota’s near-flawless performance level."

Won't the conference championship game be played in Santa Clara again this year?

Yes - my mistake.
Perhaps it's the venue change that Mandel sees doing the trick for Oregon.
