Re: Cutty Sark! - rudruff - 08-25-2015

I am not saying that rehab is going to work for him or even if it is appropriate, just that it seems to be how we allow people to move on after things like this. He is going to have to have a good answer for the mom of every 5* whose living room he walks into.

"Rehab with a strong support structure help me battle this every day" sounds a lot better than "I don't do it front of students and donors anymore".

Sark was ... mixing medications and alcohol:

And is going to rehab BUT DEFINITELY DOESN'T NEED TO:

Re: Cutty Sark! - socalstanfan1 - 08-25-2015

Sounds like a guy who:

A) May be in denial about a real problem (thus the now-threadbare excuse about mixing alcohol and medication), and

B) Is being compelled into some sort of rehab/counseling by Haden

Re: Cutty Sark! - FarmBoy - 08-25-2015

Gee, what parent wouldn't want to have their kid coached by such a guy!

Sark presser turns into big media event...

I'm kind of worried this unites the team behind Sark more than had been the case.

Re: Cutty Sark! - Spiny_Norman - 08-25-2015

Let's suppose Sark has a few drinks after a practice or game at a local bar, then has an accident driving home where someone is injured.  Would the university be subject to civil litigation by the injured party if they knew he had a problem but took no action?

I am not a lawyer, but seems to me that treatment of some kind is a must-do as a risk mitigation.

Not a lawyer either, but unless he is acting on behalf of U$C at the time of the accident I don't think the University would be liable. So if he were driving to see a recruit I think there would be a case against the University, but if he were merely driving home there wouldn't be.

Also not a lawyer but I would imagine the university would have no liability.  Sarkisian is an adult and his actions are his own.  Does the university have a moral obligation to get him help, if they know he has a problem?  I would say yes, but of course that is up for debate.  But as for a legal obligation?  I truly doubt it, but hopefully a resident attorney (of which I'm sure there is at least a small handful) can shed some light.

Yo Sark, you're either an alcoholic or you're not.  There's no sort of there, and there's no sort of in rehab either you are or you aren't.

Re: Cutty Sark! - BostonCard - 08-25-2015

Some thoughts:

1) Alcoholism is a serious disease with potentially devastating consequences.  Obviously the affected individual can suffer horrible consequences, but the disease can also cause serious collateral damage.  As such, though I love USChaddenfraude as much as the next person, I take little joy in the episode if it is truly a sign of a substance use disorder.

2) I wouldn't even attempt to diagnose a substance use disorder over the internet.  However, some of the hallmarks of substance use disorders include: problems controlling intake of alcohol, continued use of alcohol despite problems resulting from drinking, development of a tolerance, drinking that leads to risky situations, or the development of withdrawal symptoms. The events as described suggest that this is a possibility with Sarkisian.

3) Saying, "I don't know if I need to go to rehab" usually means you need to go to rehab (or you need some sort of treatment).  The problem, as others suggested is that this sort of denial (if someone does suffer from a substance abuse problem) also means that rehab is unlikely to be effective.

4) If Sarkisian does indeed have an alcohol abuse disorder, the road is likely to be long and difficult.  Much as I don't like him as an opposing coach of a particularly disliked team, especially a seemingly weasily one, I do hope that if he seeks treatment that it will be successful, and that he comes out a better person for it.

So the team made him do Up and Down drills as punishment.  Humiliating, I would think, and obviously undermines his authority and respect.

I'm sure Haden and the SC PR folks are working OT today on this.  At the very least, I think they need to suspend him and require him to go to rehab.  Which means he probably won't be coaching the team when we play the Toejams next month. ;)

Rehab?  Let's not get carried away.  You've never in your life been drunker than perhaps you should have been?
[/quote]

I've been drunker than I should have been many times.  Very few of those times were after I turned 25.  And none of them involved being inappropriately drunk at a work-related event.

To put this in context, I have tenure, but I would still be seriously worried about what consequences I'd face if I were inappropriately drunk in a way that publicly embarrassed my school in front of major donors.

I used to work with a "professional" who was extremely well thought of, got LOADED at a holiday party, felt up two wives (of other men) and defecated on a stairwell landing.  brobdingnagian earner.  He wasn't fired, but he wasn't allowed to leave his office for public events, meetings or anything firm-related for three years.  he was not allowed in other offices, and had to get permission to go to clients.  Very serious about this.

I can count on two fingers the number of professionals that I've seen that got that drunk at a work function.

I agree with you that this kind of thing may undermine his authority, making him more "one of the guys." And anyone in a teaching/supervisory position knows a little distance between them and the people they are managing or teaching is valuable.

But I wonder: does Sark just want to be one of the guys? Is this, at root, a kind of maturity issue? If so, he may at heart feel like this "punishment" just reaffirms that he is "one of the guys". Maybe an ok guy to hang out with, but a leader and role model for young men?

Say what?  If a player were to show up sloshed for a team function and show the behavior that Sarkisian showed, the appropriate punishment would have been a suspension for violating team rules.  Up and Downs are what you do when a player arrives a few minutes late for practice, or takes a play off or something like that.  It seems like in this case the "punishment" meted by the team has no correlation to the severity of the offense.

Re: Cutty Sark! - SUBuddha - 08-25-2015

I am not going to lie I guffawed when I saw an Oregon fan change his use of 7 win Steve to 7Shot Steve on another board I frequent. Then it occurred to me, either you have issues or you made a mistake, given his history at UW and the fact that the coaches drank in the locker room after games both at UW and USC (according to reports today). This becomes less amusing and more of a concern for his health and safety.

Don't get me wrong I despise Sark, but I would never wish addiction on anyone.

Re: Cutty Sark! - washingtonismoney - 08-25-2015

It's hard to know what to make of this treatment/rehab thing. Either:

1) it's serious, and therefore how can Sark coach? (to say nothing of his seeming lack of acceptance)
2) it's not serious... in which case, why tell us about this? (well, I guess: PR...but the risk here is, what if Sarkisian really *does* have a problem?)
