Yes, all five of them are in the top 9 in combined homers and steals. The list is as follows:

1. Rickey Henderson 1,703 (297 HRs and 1,406 steals)
2. Barry Bonds          1,276 (762 HRs and 514 steals)
3. Lou Brock             1,087 (149 HRs and 938 steals)
4.
5.
6. Willie Mays            998 (660 HRs and 338 steals)
7.
8. Tim Raines            978 (170 HRs and 808 steals)
9.

Ty Cobb has to be somewhere in the top 10.

Maybe Alex Rodriques?  Not sure where the cutline would fall.

Correct on both Cobb and Rodriguez. The updated list is:

1. Rickey Henderson 1,703 (297 HRs and 1,406 steals)
2. Barry Bonds          1,276 (762 HRs and 514 steals)
3. Lou Brock             1,087 (149 HRs and 938 steals)
4. Alex Rodriguez     1,025 (696 HRs and 329 steals)
5. Ty Cobb                1,014 (117 HRs and 897 steals)
6. Willie Mays              998 (660 HRs and 338 steals)
7.
8. Tim Raines              978 (170 HRs and 808 steals)
9.

Well Hank Aaron has 750+ home runs alone, so if he had 200ish steals he should be on the list.

Joe Morgan

RE: Sports trivia thread 2025 - BostonCard - 09-05-2025

My other guess would be Billy Hamilton, who’s in the top-5 in career stolen bases.  Since the other four (Henderson, Brock, Cobb, and Raines) top base stealers are on the list, I would think that if he hit any number of home runs that might be enough to get him into the 950+ combined that would be needed.

Correct on both Cobb and Rodriguez.

So speed, power, and longevity wins.  Maybe Joe Morgan?

Or someone who just stole the heck throughout his career without much power - Any of those?

Both Aaron and Morgan are correct. The list looks like this:

1. Rickey Henderson 1,703 (297 HRs and 1,406 steals)
2. Barry Bonds          1,276 (762 HRs and 514 steals)
3. Lou Brock             1,087 (149 HRs and 938 steals)
4. Alex Rodriguez     1,025 (696 HRs and 329 steals)
5. Ty Cobb                1,014 (117 HRs and 897 steals)
6. Willie Mays              998 (660 HRs and 338 steals)
7. Hank Aaron             995 (755 HRs and 240 steals)
8. Tim Raines              978 (170 HRs and 808 steals)
9. Joe Morgan             957 (268 HRs and 689 steals)

And if I had not arbitrarily limited the list to years since 1900, Billy Hamilton would be 10th on the list with a total of 954 (40 HRs and 914 steals).

You guys got that one quickly! Well done!

RE: Sports trivia thread 2025 - BostonCard - 09-05-2025

Interesting that the top 5 career steals leaders are on there (if you allow Hamilton), and 4 of the top 6 home runs hitters are on there (only Babe Ruth and Albert Pujoles are not).  Morgan is the only player not in the top 10 of either home runs (#221) or steals (#11).

I’m a little surprised that there aren’t more guys with 400 - 600 in each category, but it goes to show how speed and power are not very correlated (maybe even anti-correlated).

From a newsletter (The US in Brief, by the Economist):

Which Major League Baseball team was the first to put its logo on a cap?

RE: Sports trivia thread 2025 - terry - 09-07-2025

The Reds?

RE: Sports trivia thread 2025 - BostonCard - 09-07-2025

Nope, it was the Tigers.  Although according to this article, "I would say the 1901 Tigers are the first Major League team to place an image of its team nickname on its cap. Now, that's very specific language"

https://www.mlb.com/news/featured/baseball-cap-history-and-timeline

Apparently, Baltimore had previously displayed a graphical item on their cap.
