And after he announced, the commentators noted that Stanford would be having a much smaller class than other schools, because attrition is so much lower .

In other words, it's not just a 40 vs 4 year decision, for a lot of schools it might just be a 1 or 2 year decision.

Yes.  Bizarre as it sounds, our student athletes are students first and actually want to attend classes and graduate.  Imagine that.

I love that all his family whipped out Stanford hats after he picked Stanford.  I will admit to being a little nervous that Stanford was the furthest one away from him.

My heart also sank a little when I saw where the Stanford cap sat and then nearly died a thousand deaths during that split second when he himself didn't even begin to reach over in that direction...

So after Sarrell, where does that leave us?  How many open spots, and do we have many likely prospects to fill them?

Re: Class of 2017 - ChicagoCard - 01-07-2017

With McCaffrey and Solomon leaving, will the recruiting class be two spots larger, or will those spots go to new or existing walk-ons? An elite defensive line recruit sure would be nice.

I've often thought of it as being as much about the school's/coaching staff's approach to "roster management" as anything else. Alabama has finished #1 in recruiting for each of the past several years. Sure, they've had a disproportionate number of 4- and 5-star guys, but they've also had 26, 26, 24 and 24 recruits over the past 4 years and already have 26 recruits again this cycle...

Depending on your perspective, that can be a good thing. I remember one poster quite a while ago said that he wanted players who were football players first and students afterward. We're getting players now who leave without their degrees, so they may fit that bill. Other players, like Luck, graduate, and then leave after their true senior year with one year of eligibility remaining.

Re: Class of 2017 - larkinforever - 01-07-2017

We now have commitments from 247's #1 QB, #1 OT and #1 TE.

I'm guessing that has never happened for us before (with any 3 positions), but then I started to wonder if it has ever happened for any school.

Answer - Alabama, as recently as 2014. And in 2013 Alabama had the #1 player at 4 positions...

Re: Class of 2017 - TreesAndBirds - 01-07-2017

is redshirting part of the reason we have fewer scholarships each year? It seems that if someone redshirts they are ( potentially) getting a scholarship for 5  years not 4, thereby reducing the number of new scholarships available each year. Do we redshirt more than other schools?

Re: Class of 2017 - OutsiderFan - 01-07-2017

Now it's all about DE Ryan Johnson, DT Dalyn Wade-Perry, and RB Connor Wedington.

Also could use a LB, CB, and another WR perhaps?

One of the recruits today said he was happy to commit for the next "three or four years" to blah, blah "university."  It came across to me as both arrogant and sad... He's so full of himself, apparently he doesn't need to worry about getting a degree...

Maybe he is planning on getting his degree in 3 (or at most 4) years? Though that may reveal arrogance, too.  :P

Everyone has goals. Someone might say a high school freshman who says he plans to go to Stanford is full of himself too.

Davis Mills seems mainly to retweet about his current teammates and other Stanford recruits, with a small number of exceptions - including Sarell (before he committed), Little (before he committed), Ryan Johnson and Wedington. I'm going to go ahead and read some tea leaves and take that as a positive (but not dispositive) sign.

Re: Class of 2017 - CrazedZooChimp - 01-07-2017

I think there's almost no chance that Weddington doesn't commit. I think he's just planning to do a little of the recruiting business first since he missed so much while committed to UW. I don't recall if he announced a date, but I'm willing to put money that he's ours.

He said he's committing on signing day.

Leonard Warner (4-star ILB) is apparently planning to attend Big Visit.

Haven't read a whole lot about him here, but he is reportedly a great student and very serious about engineering (attended some national science conferences, completely unrelated to football).

Also found this excerpt from a recruiting story on Warner interesting and promising:
"Warner’s father is an educator. Academics were stressed in his household. “I even told him that if he decided that he didn’t want to play football anymore to just go ahead and make that call,” his father Leonard Warner Jr. said last summer. “He can make that call. He would be fine. We would be fine. Leonard can go to college without football.”"

Re: Class of 2017 - FarmBoy - 01-07-2017

So, does this pretty much put us on the radar for every top rated RB with good grades in the next two classes?

Fair enough, but I believe Sarell said he plans to spend the next 4 years at Stanford, and that Stanford has been his "dream school since he was a little kid."  To me that has a much different feel than saying he plans to stay 3 or 4 years (with all that implies), but maybe I'm just an old grouch.

Foster Sarell commits to Stanford - Snorlax94 - 01-07-2017

http://www.si.com/college-football/2017/01/07/foster-sarell-stanford-commit

It's nice to hear about another top recruit choosing to make the great lifetime decision -- not just a 40-year decision.

Being at Stanford were the best five years of my life so I'm excited and a little envious when I think about anyone about to start their time there and I imagine it's just as exciting for student athletes.

Recruits Colby Parkinson (#1 TE), Davis Mills (#1 QB), Walker Little (#2 OL) and Foster Sarell (#1 OL) were at today's Army All-American game.

What an exciting combination for the offense's future.
