LOL - the only other guy I can think of from that far back was maybe Ollie Matson and only because he played at USF ~ then and IIRC also participated in T&F as an Olympian (52 or 56).  I don't think he was very short though.

RE: Sports trivia thread 2025 - BobK - 10-09-2025

Well in 1944 he was 5th. He stood 5-4.

RE: Sports trivia thread 2025 - BobK - 10-09-2025

Well, there was the raft of second placer finishers: Gerhart, Luck, McCaffrrey, and Love.  Add to that list Plunket (who won), Elway (another second place finisher) and we’re at six.

RE: Sports trivia thread 2025 - BobK - 10-10-2025

In the 30s. Notre Dame ??

Pretty good halfback and punter for Notre Dame, too. Still holds the ND record for longest punt at 86 yards (70 in the air). Third overall selection in 1936 NFL draft.

At the same time, Northwestern had a player named Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. The press had a lot of fun when NU and ND played each other.

The two WS's don't quite look identical, though the family claimed to be descendants of the playwright...and of course, his football nickname was "The Merchant of Menace" or "The Bard of Staten Island."

I don’t know if this is trivia, but after last night’s bizarre Milwaukee 8-6-2U bases loaded double play that consisted of force outs at home and third base, I was curious if there were more bizarre double play combinations out there.

Anyone have some good ones?

A's vs. Angels, 2017. Runners on 2nd and 3rd. An A's pitcher (Graveman?) fielded a comebacker, but instead of going to first, he runs at the 3B runner who had broken for home. He tags him out, hops over him, then runs to tag out the runner from second base now sliding into third base, thereby completing an unassisted double play by the pitcher. And the Giants had a 3-1-4-2 DP, 1B (Davis) fielded the ball at the mound, tossed it to the pitcher, who threw it tothe second baseman at 1B (first out), who then threw the ball to Bailey to get the runner at home. Since they started recording DP sequences in 1961, there has never been another one of these.

Here's a 1-6-4-3...

And this might be my favorite, Game 7, 2014 World Series.

Here's a good one with the Giants' future manager, Nick Hundley as the A's catcher. A's CF robs batter of HR, airmails it past 1st base, Hundley backing up, throws out runner at second.

Angel Pagan to Craw to Belt...
Pagan's unbelievable catch starts double play

Not so trivial (pertaining to the Giants)….

As the great Lee Corso often said, “Not so fast, my friend.”

With the SD managerial position opening up, Hundley may become their top candidate.  Given he lives in SD, he may be inclined to accept, if offered.

RE: Sports trivia thread 2025 - BostonCard - 10-14-2025

If we are talking about Giant double plays, how about this 3-1-4-2 double play.
