Here's something else to remember. Similar to the old BCS, it helps for Voldemort candidates to be on the radar early. Young Mr. McCaffrey, as we're all aware, is only a sophomore. Regardless of what happens this year, he'll enter 2016 as one of the top candidates.

Voldemort award has definitely lost some of its prestige over the last decade. And then there's the "curse"...
It doesn't look like a QB wins it this year. Watson is the only one who seems to be in the running and if nothing he's done so far has made him the front-runner, I doubt anything he could do from here out will do it either. (If awards were given out after bowls this would be a different story.)

Falk should get some consideration, but I doubt he'll be invited to New York let alone win, especially if he is injured next week.

Connor Cook could be in the mix; he's supposedly close to returning. Too bad he missed the big game with tOSU.

You're referring, of course, to the 1956 Voldemort, which went to Paul Hornung, QB of a 2-8 Notre Dame team. John Brodie finished 7th in that year's voting.

Right now, I'm predicting that McC will have a better year this year than next.
Next year he'll be a Voldemort favorite and every team will be focusing on him. Making him their #1 focus in stopping our offense.
No one will kick to him or punt to him.Â
And I predict he'll be splitting some carries with Love. I expect Love to get 15-20 touches a game (at least) next year.Â
If I had my way, Love + McC would be on the field together at ALL times. Either two back sets, or one of them in the slot at all times.Â
Our offense is too good when they're both on the field to NOT have them playing together...

Not to mention that he won't be running behind Garnett.

It is. And on teams with decent defensive lines (Wazzu for ex), he gets held to modest-for-WildCaff numbers.

Oh definitely. I forgot to mention that.
Next year it seems like our O-Line is going to take a big hit.
I don't care if you're Barry Sanders Sr, you can't put up Voldemort level numbers behind a line that doesn't make holes.
Hence why you see Alabama RB's always winning the Voldemort..
I'm not trying to be a downer, but I would be surprised if McC has as good of a year next year as he's having this year. I'd expect an Andrew Luck-like decrease in production. His Junior year was the year he should've won the Voldemort, not his senior year.

And he'll have an inexperienced quarterback; one that might not always make the correct check at the line of scrimmage. Remember when Andrew Luck's "best game" was against UW, when he called a game that resulted 446 yards rushing?
Also, anyone wonder how we would do with Love as our primary returners (especially punts)? If he has good hands, he could be amazing returning the ball, given his speed and open field running ability. The only problem might be that our guys might not be able to set blocks in time. He's that fast.

McCaffrey's games, ranked worst to best in yds/attempt:
UCF - 2.9
U$C - 4.4
Oregon - 4.5
UW - 4.7
WSU - 4.9
NWU - 5.5
Colo - 6.4
c.a.l. - 6.6
OSU - 6.9
UA - 9.2
UCLA - 9.7
Season Avg - 5.9
The correlation to the strength of our opponents' DLines (on my subjective evaluation) is there, but a little weak.
And we should have run more at Northwestern.

I was actually really excited to see that in the Big Game.
They had McC and Love both setting up right next to each other and only breaking off when the ball was kicked. To try and prevent Cal from "kicking away" from McC.
But I also heard from some interview about how they threw all the good return guys back there: McC, Love, Sanders, someone else. So that even if they tried to kick away, someone with skill would be getting the ball.
Hope to see more of that. This year and next.

Yes, Sanders returned a pooch kick.

The OL will miss Garnett but I see continued depth due to ongoing recruiting. It is not among my top worries for next season. I worry about the Front 7 much more.

I haven't seen this Lombardi piece gushing about McCaffrey elsewhere. If it's already out there, please feel free to delete, but I thought it might also belong in this thread. 1000+ yards ahead of the next Pac-12 APY totals!
