They didn't wait for the name!  For all they knew it could have been Solomon Thomas, and his 34 APY against SC.

Anyone else getting irked by people qualifying McCaffrey's record?  "It took him two more games..."  He broke the record early in the 2nd quarter, iirc, so it took him just over one additional game, but he still did it on fewer touches.

I am kind of amazed that for all the "he took more games" talk, it took me until after the CCG to hear that it actually took fewer touches. Why wasn't that being used all the time as a counterpoint to the "more games" talk?

And I don't like promoting him as a running back.  He is an EVERYTHING back.  But, water over the dam.  Votes are in.

It's not really that crazy to think about how many games were involved.

All purpose yards combines efficiency and workload to measure total contribution to a team. Noting that McCaffrey got there on fewer touches indicates more efficiency. However, you really don't want to go all in on yds/touch - there's a ton of guys with more yds/play than McCaffrey. These guys aren't nearly as valuable as McCaffrey as they don't carry nearly the offensive load.
[For example, the #3 guy is a Texas Tech receiver who averages 17.5 yds/touch to McCaffrey's 8.5 but he only has 124 touches to McCaffrey's 410. ]

So, yds/game doesn't take into account pace of play or how the game has changed in the past 26 years, but it's probably the best option for comparing All Purpose Yards.
[... at least that is readily available - I might like All Purpose Yards per drive, but good luck finding that.]

Beats me.  People also like to discredit McCaffrey's stats for being "inflated" by his return yardage.  They conveniently ignore that Sanders had 21 kick returns of his own in '88 (to Mac's 36), Christian just averaged 8.9 more yards (28.9 to 20.0).

They will use any excuse available, and if none are available they will just make one up.

This was cool, but on further reflection made me a bit sad- wonder what it was like in the Oklahoma or Navy video room.

Re: I have no words for McCaffrey - BostonCard - 12-07-2015

If people want to discount McCaffrey's return yardage, they can always use yards from scrimmage...

McCaffrey has a 300 yard (23 yard/game) advantage in yards from scrimmage compared to Henry.  He's also averaging 0.6 yards per play more than Henry.

It's all about numbers. Henry wears one on his helmet. He wins. End of story.

You're absolutely right.  Regardless of how things turn out next Saturday, next year we should promote him as an OMNI-back or a hybrid back; something to highlight his multi-dimensionality.

What an impressive class of backs.

FWIW, ESPN experts now pick McCaffrey: http://espn.go.com/college-football/Voldemort/

Geaux Cardinal!

Oh it's not crazy to mention that it took more games, that context is essential. But just saying that makes one think that they got about the same number of touches per game, so Sanders was more efficient and carried more load. Knowing that Sanders carried more of the load but was slightly less efficient than McCaffrey makes the whole view more nuanced, and makes McCaffrey's performance more impressive.

Incidentally, was Sanders getting 40 touches a game or something? It's kind of amazing that he somehow got more total touches in 11 games than McCaffrey got in 13. We use McCaffrey a lot!

Re: I have no words for McCaffrey - OutsiderFan - 12-08-2015

FWIW, there is a poll on the Ca.l Rivals board for "Who will win the Voldemort Trophy?"

CMac has the most votes.  That was surprising to me, because I know they are loathe to see Stanford win a Voldemort in addition to going to Rose Bowls in 3/4 years.

Re: I have no words for McCaffrey - stupac2 - 12-08-2015

As far as I can tell the only reason to prefer Henry over McCaffrey is raging bias. I know I'm clearly biased so it's hard to say that, but it's not clear that Henry is the best player on his own team, the best RB in his own conference, and he's very clearly not the best RB in the country. If it were between McCaffrey and Cook or if Watson weren't clearly going to be #3 then I could see it, but if you take off the blinders at all Henry just has no case whatsoever.

Re: I have no words for McCaffrey - cardFan - 12-08-2015

Stanford football just shared this link on Facebook, "It was McCaffrey’s trophy to lose and he capped his season in style."

Re: I have no words for McCaffrey - yvonne - 12-08-2015

Wouldn't it be cool if it could actually happen? I'm still not a believer in the Voldemort voters, but I'd love to be wrong.

I hate your pessimism/cynicism, Yvonne. Not that it is unwarranted, but it makes me happy to see you are open to being wrong :)  It does seem there is very good reason to believe CMac has won.

The votes have already been counted.  They just won't be announced publicly until Saturday night.
