Re: Stanford athletes schedules & performances in the Olympics -
DC 86 - 08-11-2016
I have a feeling that Stanford is fairly conservative in tabulating these medal counts, which I consider the correct approach.
However, consider Janet Evans: won three gold medals at the 1988 Olympics and a gold/silver at the 1992 Olympics. In between she competed for Stanford at the NCAA level. Post 1992 she attended Texas and then graduated from USC, although she did not compete at either school. Of course on USC's web site her five medals are included as part of their claim of winning more medals than any other university. She is a USC alum but IMO it's bogus to include her medals, which gets back to my point about inconsistency. Stanford is taking a more honest approach (which I endorse) but by not including the Heidens and Strugs (and many others) it is shortchanging itself since most readers are not going to discern that different criteria is being applied by different schools.

Perhaps I can help a bit.
I was also a swimmer, and my brother still coaches and swims in open water competitions. Most of the dirt I get comes from him.
The swimming community is really up in arms over the doping issue. My sense is that most of the swimmers from places outside of Russia and China were cheering on Lilly King for speaking out on Efimova. There are a few others that seem to fall into the category of "everybody knows they're doping even if they haven't tested positive". That's a dangerous category, because everybody doesn't quite KNOW, but it's enough to make me suspicious.
Maya DiRado is easy to cheer for. A Stanford legacy, very good student (probably even among Stanford students), apparently very friendly, and has kept at it past a few tough moments. Missed on the London games as she was fourth at trials in both IMs. Won her first NCAA title as a senior (2014), made her first Olympics this year, and is on a roll - which is what got her on the 4x200 free relay that she didn't qualify for it (or swim the 200 free at all) at trials.
USA is swimming well, but nine countries have won gold medals in swimming so far, which is a nice mix.

A nice mix, for swimming. Amazing how the Olympics has become a story of different regions and sports segments.
The Olympics is so fragmented. Table tennis, judo, beach volleyball, weightlifting and swimming are probably all featured sports in a few countries. Swimming is a big deal in the USA coverage, but I suspect it is not much more than a brief highlight reel for several European countries. The IOC's quest to get as many countries interested in the Olympics means that everyone is watching a different 2016 Olympics.
With that I need to get home to watch handball!! :P

Breaking a university record, Stanford athletes raked in 25 medals during last month's Olympic Games.

Stanford boasted more athletes than any other school at the Beijing Olympics, with 48 students and alumni competing for eight countries.

Thirty-nine Stanford athletes representing 14 sports from rowing to wrestling will compete in the 2012 London Olympic Games.

Sure, they are one of the swimming nine.
I can only imagine that handball is passionately watched by some group of countries too. Ditto for Field Hockey. Side note: that bright blue turf LOOKS awful, though I think London had the same awful scheme.Â
Note to IOC:Â Diving should be in a pool that looks blue and field hockey should be played on a field that looks green.Â

Thanks for your thoughts on this DC. The Janet Evans example is exactly the discussion I was having with an SC alum. Evans is listed first in some of their website stories! Note that I couldn't find her on UT's site. Stanford has not compiled (or at least made public) a list of all its Olympic participants or its medal winners. As Eric and I showed, Stanford's sites differ on the medal total. I think that creating such a list would be a worthy undertaking and the AD can vet it with people like BobK, Terry, Rutter and others that will likely spot omissions!
I agree that its a slippery slope and of course SC takes the most advantageous approach. Using their formula, my sense is that we may well have more participants and medal winners overall? I believe we would clearly lead for Team USA participants and medal winners. The press is using this info and putting out stories, and I would rather have these based on a level playing field of data. I think the AD should make a list of all Olympic participants and medal winners and note those that didn't actually participate in said sport while at Stanford. I think per a prior comment, Stanford considers you an alum if you attended at least 3 quarters in a row.Â

Thanks, Treebound.
I don't think lack of participation at Stanford is a disqualifier. For example, Debi Thomas didn't compete for Stanford but she was a full time student during the time that she trained for and competed in the 1988 Olympics. If Katie Ledecky enrolls this fall but elects to compete professionally instead of collegiately I would still consider her part of Stanford's contingent at this and future Olympics. The problem remains some schools' very liberal interpretation of the numbers which seems to include anyone who attended, even if it was long after the time that they earned their Olympic medals.

Eric,
Thanks for posting, I hadn't seen the Summer Olympics breakout on Go Stanford - my bad :P
Thanks too for the reminder on Ferrari...for some reason I buried that thread in my mind post Garvin's defection!
In scrolling through the list, it looks like all of Stanford's medals are for team USA except for 3 (Can, Aut, and Nzl). I'm still curious as to where the 280 count came from on the main Stanford site? I think both you and DC are correct in that the AD has created a more conservative list here and obviously excluded the Winter games. Â
Given that Stanford has the most NCAA individual titles, I'm guessing that if the AD compiled a list of all of our Olympic competitors, we may well be ahead of SC on that count as well. Let's see if Earl and co can generate that list.

Ties for the gold! Great reaction upon realizing her victory. I had no idea ties were possible, but it's historic for a different reason: she is the first African-American woman to win a medal in an individual Olympic swimming event.

Re: Stanford athletes schedules & performances in the Olympics -

My mistake, I was thinking of Bill Toomey, who I now see is listed as a Stanford Olympian on the gostanford site. He competed in track and field as an undergrad for Colorado and then received a Master's degree in Education from Stanford. By my criteria he doesn't really qualify but looking at USC and UCLA's list of medal winners they have athletes with much more tenuous connections.

Stanford W. swimming and diving team will be hard to beat with Manuel, Ladecky and Cook on the team. The team is loaded with great talents.
