Wilner: everything sucks:

It sounds like Wilner heard Shaw say the same things I did in a post-practice interview. His tone is way more pessimistic than Shaw's was. Wilner certainly seems to be pretty dogmatic in his belief that if one guy doesn't clearly separate himself from the other guys with whom he's competing, it follows that they all suck. That can be true, but I think Stanford has recruited and developed players to perform well, long enough, to have earned the benefit of the doubt Wilner is hell bent against providing.

Wilner's memory may be a bit defective when it comes to the defensive line. I can't find much on-the-record optimism from Feb. 2015 to Aug. 2015 from the coaches with respect to the depth. In fact, I can see a lot more on-the-record acknowledgement of its thinness, e.g.:
http://www.sfgate.com/collegesports/article/Stanford-s-few-defensive-linemen-getting-plenty-6124362.php
Shaw was fairly equivocal when it came to the defensive line's incoming freshmen:
http://www.espn.com/blog/pac12/post/_/id/84732/stanford-opens-spring-practice-with-renewed-hunger
Or here's Shaw in Aug. 2015: "I think we have a lot of talent on the defensive live but it's unproven talent."
https://stanford.rivals.com/news/media-day-notes-defense
I may be being overly selective because of hindsight bias, but by Shaw's standards he's pretty withdrawn. If you know how to read between the lines -- which any experienced beat reporter should be able to do -- then I think you could forecast reasonably well how the DL turned out in 2015.

Since most of the pundits are pretty bullish on Stanford's prospects this year, Wilner may feel that he will get more attention (and mouse clicks) if he plays devil's advocate.

Jesse Burkett is your starting center. A profile:

Just your typical lineman double majoring in Japanese (which he started learning in college) and Symbolic Systems.

This is truly mind-boggling. Only at Stanford.
He's also going to stand out bigtime when he visits Japan. Just hope he won't get recruited by, and decide to join, a sumo stable! :P

I can see Jesse teaching the rest of the Tunnel Workers rudimentary Japanese for the blocking calls, causing chaos in all opposing defenses......

Any possibility Jesse could be an upgrade over Schuler at center? Sounds pretty impressive . . . although definitely not the case normally with a 2 year starter leaving

Still perplexed about rotating Shuler out of the Oregon game. After the first fumbled exchange I wish they had kept him in.

Casey Tucker interview:

Have to say, I'm not a big fan of moving Tucker to LT. He's never seemed like a good enough athlete to be a great pass protector. But maybe the truth is Bright isn't any better athletically and Tucker has longer arms, so he gets the job.

LT.  Bright is at RT
We should probably let them play before judging ð

Most likely we'll see something better, some less good.
Shuler had been a two year starter and generally worked well with his neighbors by last year.
However, it isn't normal to rotate out your center on short yardage situations. For now I am assuming we won't be doing that this year.
With Burkett moving right into the starting role as a redshirt frosh, I expect he will eventually be an overall upgrade. Whether it will happen this year is hard to know.
On Tucker, the plan for some time was to have him play LT, so it seems quite clear the coaches think he can play there. It's true that he was occasionally out of position early on last year, but as far as I can tell many of the fan complaints about him were on plays it wasn't at all clear it was Tucker at fault.

Symbolic Systems! This is the first time I have heard of a football player in my major!

Some of my other thoughts I posted while I was there:
First half:
-We sure jay Tyler is 5'7?? Dude looks 5'5 standing next to the rest of the offense
- Nice pitch and catch TD Costello to Stewart. After a couple miffed snaps by Costello.
- Didn't see much from either burns or Chryst, but I showed up a little late
Second half:
- Burns looking solid his second time around after 'half time' (?). Line giving him a ton of time in the pocket
- Beautiful TD pass On the run Burns to Irwin
- Didn't see much from Chryst on his second go around. Defense dominated
- Costello looked decent again. Nice pass to Stewart
Also, that was all the analysis of a casual fan. I look forwarding to reading what more informed fans thought of the scrimmage :)
