NBC Sports is reporting that Dykes has actually spoken with Baylor.

I'm surprised NBC would count Yikes standing outside the AD's offices with a boombox as speaking, but communication takes many forms.

I'm sure that UC fans have their fingers crossed.  Please take him....  Please take him......

Re: Coaching carousel - fullmetal - 12-05-2016

Well, this late in the coaching hire game, kal won't be able to find an obviously qualified candidate with a track record of success.  Perhaps they'll end up with an even more mediocre coach on an exorbitant salary (commensurate with experience) for longer!

Re: Coaching carousel - BostonCard - 12-05-2016

I'd rather a demonstrated mediocre coach with a losing conference record at Cal than a high-beta coach who might be awful but leaves open the possibility that Berkeley lucks into a decent coach.  Remember, Pete Carroll was USC's third choice that year.

Indiana coach let go for alleged player mistreatment

Re: Coaching carousel - fullmetal - 12-05-2016

I read about that recently.  Seems like IU had no choice in the matter, didn't look good at all.

Temple's Matt Rhule to Baylor: https://twitter.com/BruceFeldmanCFB/status/806177933282910208

Sonny Yikes, I'm sure, wilted.

Re: Coaching carousel - fullmetal - 12-06-2016

Whoa.  Yikes had Texas ties...Rhule is a Pennsylvania/NE guy through and through (with a stint at UCLA and Western Carolina).  Yikes must have really not impressed :p

Re: Coaching carousel - ChicagoCard - 12-06-2016

I had seen a rumor that Mike McIntyre was a candidate at Baylor, apparently one of his kids goes there. I'm glad that's not happening.

Re: Coaching carousel - wallendar - 12-06-2016

All this does is delay the inevitable one year.  I thought they learned from the Holmoe experience that hoping for a miraculous turnaround is fruitless.  Given the schedule next year is far more difficult than the 2016 version, they have no hope of reaching a bowl game.

North Carolina ®, Mississippi (h), Stanford ®, SC ®, UW ®, Colorado ® - there is six losses.  Add in in any one of the following - ASU (h), WSU (h), OSU (h), UO ®, UCLA (h) and you have another losing record.  I'll give them a win over Weber State (h).

Re: Coaching carousel - BostonCard - 12-07-2016

And next year they find out the downside of taking a graduate transfer, as Oregon found out this year.

PS, I wonder if Webb regrets decomitting from Colorado.

Willie Taggart to Oregon, according to Brett McMurphy this morning. This has to be something like the ultimate off-field Stanford victory over Oregon?

Interesting hires by Oregon and Baylor. One goes with their grain, the other against it.

Oregon gets Taggart, who strikes me as a very bright young coaching talent. More particularly, his current South Florida team seems to fit the Oregon mold. They have a run-first, spread offense with the QB running an essential ingredient (QB is their top rusher). They move the ball and score a lot of points (7th in pts/gm, 10th in yds/gm) - though I don't think they are particularly up-tempo by current standards. They are also somewhat defensively challenged, but much better on a per play basis (120th in yds/gm allowed, 84th in pts/gm at 31.0, but 74th in yds/play).

Baylor by contrast goes with Matt Rhule, also a bright young coach but hardly in the Baylor mode (which on many issues is the point at Baylor right now). He doesn't have any obvious Texas ties, being mostly a northeast guy. He is also known as a defense-first coach. Temple has risen from the dregs by building a defense. They're #8 nationally in pts/gm allowed (17.2), 3rd in total defense yds/gm (276), 5th yds/play (4.60). Their offense is less prolific, 43rd in pts/gm (32.8 ) , 65th in yds/gm (416), 49th in yds/play (6.05). This despite the fact that Temple apparently had a lot of returning experience on offense this year, and lots to replace on defense. They're an aggressive defense with lots of sacks and tackles for loss. Rhule originally tried to install a spread-offense, but it crashed and they returned to TEs, a FB, and a more power-oriented offense.

If all this keeps up, they might kick Baylor out of the Big 12 - or at least exile them into a separate division with KSU. On the other hand, I did find this quotation from Rhule from an article in the Philly Inquirer from a year ago,
Quote:"I would love the day when we look like Baylor - we go out there early on and we're scoring 30 points in the first quarter," Rhule said. "But that's not us."

... and how long until Teejers comes to tell us we're doomed by Oregon hiring wunderkid Taggart?
