Especially 2004, when BYU played at Stanford Stadium, and the Band declared that marriage is between a man and a woman, and a woman, and a woman, and a women, with the dollies prancing about in wedding veils and marrying the band manager in a send up of polygamy.
The BYU halftime show is definitely my favorite in-person Band memory. The sendup pushed just to the edge of decency while also making a political point at the height of the gay marriage ban movement. By comparison, the cow-tipping was nothing.

The Iowa fans booed the band when they were lining up on Orange Grove Blvd before the start of the Rose Parade that morning. It was pretty clear they just hated the concept of the Stanford Band regardless of the reality. They would have booed and complained about anything the Band did at the game.Â

Interesting that the articles say it's The Zombies' "She's Not There"--I'd always assumed it was Santana's, and now that I've actually listened to The Zombies' version, I'm pretty sure Band plays Santana's version.

The Zombie's version is the original version, created by the band's organist. Santana's is a cover done 13 years later. The Santana band is much larger than the Zombies and uses some brass instruments. It makes sense that the Santana arrangement sounds closer to the one used by the Stanford band. However, the writing credit still goes to the original.

Learn something new every day. Upon pulling up the Youtube clips, it was rather evident that the Zombies were older. But their version didn't include any of the "breakdown" part of the Santana version, which Band incorporates. I would have preferred if they said "the Santana cover of The Zombies'..." but of course they won't do that. I know it matters not one bit what I think, but I will always think of it as Santana's version when played by LSJUMB. 8)Â

Just for the record, the Spotted Owl Show was 1990. By the Notre Dame controversy, there was a review system in place.
On the BYU show, it was funny to me that the band got in trouble for making a joke that a prominent Mormon politician, later candidate for president, had made as well.
I also second rudruff's point. Getting beaten badly C(and frequently) can ill-dispose fans toward an opponent's band.

I was under the impression that said candidate lifted it from the LSJUMB (though not quite sure where I got that idea). Of course it is a joke that many have made.

I think Spiny's point might be more relevant. Our Iowa friends were booing the band well before their team got crushed.

Seems likely that you are right, unless there's some record of the band playing the arrangement before 1976. The band has used a lot of 70's rock, including Santana pieces.

CTCard--
I think you may be right; the citation I saw has Romney saying it in 2006, a few years after the halftime show.
Of course, they both may have lifted it independently from somewhere else.
