Lucky. Certainly, but Ph.D. programs are very different from Masters programs, and especially professional ones. At least when I was in grad school, Ph.D programs needed to provide aid to compete. I had several good friends in OR (operations research). None of the Masters students got any aid, all the PH.D. students did. Not sure how different it may be these days.

Pretty similar I imagine.  And I'm not complaining, mind you.  Professional degree holders get out and start earning sooner, whereas PhDs basically make research their job for the better part of a decade, so they need support.

I have no recollection of what my PhD program acceptance envelope looked like in 1980 (for a fall 1981 start). Probably it was large and fat, because I do remember getting a lot of info and it probably all came in one mailing.

I remember that MIT waitlisted me but made it very clear there was no real chance of getting accepted later off the waitlist.

Stanford said I was more or less guaranteed funding as either RA, TA, or fellowship all the way through, and that's how it worked out. With stipends being free of income tax back then and my cheap living quarters, I was putting money in the bank every month.

I honestly don't remember what the envelope looked like, I think it was larger than a standard letter.

How long ago was this? I have a student who has been deferred.

Re: Big Visit? - qwerty49 - 01-15-2017

Back in 1966 it was a fat envelope, business size, arriving April 15 or thereabouts.

My Dad was the first in our family to go to college, and I had been accepted early, with honors and scholarship money, to his alma mater (on the other side of the Bay).  I actually had to turn them down in Dec and wait another four months to hear from my other colleges, including Stanford.  That was, in retrospect, kind of weird, but at the time it didn't really bother me much.  If I hadn't gotten into Stanford, I would have probably ended up at one of the Ivies before 59er land.

And speaking of 1959, that was the first Big Game I attended, at the age of 10, with my Dad.  Dick Norman threw for 400 yards that day, and Stanford still lost on an 80-yd TD pass.  There have always been divided alumni loyalties in our family, with my brother and niece and I on the Stanford side, and my dad and daughter and cousins in blue and gold, but we really don't make much of it.

Edit:  I have to laugh that the software changed Norman's first name to Richard.  also, if someone can give me a quick course in inserting a photo, thanks.  I tried the "insert an image" icon but couldn't figure it out from there.

Thanks to Yvonne for the tip.  I had the process backwards.  Here's the 1959 Big Game program cover, that pretty much symbolizes the situation in our family:

Paste in the image URL. Select it, and then push the icon for insert photo.

2005. Hard to believe that was well over a decade ago. (Inb4 "you're so young you're not allowed to feel old".)

Norman threw for a then-NCAA record 34/39, 401 yards. He took off on the game's last play but he was so slow he got tackled from behind. Cactus Jack tried to send in the FG team but the track pistol then it use ended the game before a snap.
