To be fair to Skov, he had a much more severe injury than a basic ACL tear. IIRC, he had the tri-fecta of torn ACL, MCL, and cartilage, AKA blowing out the knee. He never had the same speed and explosion again after that injury. Would have been a top NFL pick had he stayed healthy, IMO.Â
As for Chryst, though he would never be confused for Lamar Jackson or even Andrew Luck as a runner when 100% healthy, it seems evident he isn't running at full health now. And I doubt wearing two knee braces increases speed either.

When do we expect to hear who is the starter for Saturday? I'm holding off on my prediction until that minor detail has been cleared up...

The depth chart has already been released and Chryst and Costello are an OR for starter. My guess is that we'll know who's starting when the offense takes the field for the first time.

Maybe not even then. While I wouldn't be thrilled by the idea, I wouldn't be shocked by some rotation at QB. I think Shaw likes easing his young QBs into the starting role. (See the Kevin Hogan experience.)

Yeah, could be. But, I dunno, did we see Burns at all in the second half? Maybe to do a run or something? I feel like if Shaw really wanted to do that he would've done it then. Unless you mean between him and Chryst, but as I've said before I really doubt that Chryst is going to be ready to go. How often does someone come back from a concussion in a week? It doesn't seem common, and this team doesn't seem to rush people back from injury (thankfully).

We did. Saw Burns come out the very first play of the half, if I recall correctly. He lost two yards when he read the zone-read incorrectly.
In theory Burns looks like an athletic QB. Just hasn't really shown it on the field. (Chryst looked decently above average in 2016 and obviously not so great in 2017.)

Well, he gained two yards. In that case, not sure he read the zone-read incorrectly, but the UCLA end was definitely on the ball for the play.
I think Shaw has a Burns package that mostly involves the zone-read and maybe some bootlegs. That is what we'll see of Burns going forward.
Chryst/Costello will compete for the main QB job, and I assume that Costello has the inside track at the moment.
In 2012 Shaw didn't exactly bring in Hogan slowly; Hogan had a run/pass option package that was used a couple of times. Hogan had a single career passing attempt before taking over during the Colorado game. He did have 7 rushing attempts (which only gained 18 yards total) - which probably means he had been in for 8 plays. I don't think he had ever even quarterbacked a series.
Last year was a little different, as I think Burns didn't win the starting job decisively. So, initially Chryst was coming in for a series a game, then had extended time in the blow outs versus the Washington schools. I don't think that was bringing Chryst along slowly so much as not being sure of the choice of starter.

The Burns zone read is dead. Opponents will know its coming if he steps on the field. It's been played out.

Yep, until he throws the ball. Shaw does these things for a reason.

And on top of that, the whole point of the zone read is supposed to be that it doesn't matter if you know it is coming. Look at Oregon over the years, nobody was surprised they ran the zone read. They basically ran two plays, inside zone and outside zone. They just reacted to whatever the defense did to run away from what was covered.
That doesn't work under all circumstances, as we eventually showed in 2012, 2013 when we stuffed the duckies offense. But, that won't be what a team facing us is most focussed on.

As a senior in high school, Burns attempted 221 passes. He passed for 2,530 yards and 28 touchdowns.
It's true that Stone Bridge traditionally ran a single wing, but during his senior year they installed the spread to take advantage of Burns' arm strength.

OK, so it was his Junior year he threw 25? I saw in his Max Preps stats a year with 25 passes.

Watching the highlights posted by Stanford Football social media of Costello, it looks to me like he really stares down his receivers, at least in these plays.

Will this hurt him once teams have game film of him?

Well, your source says Burns only played two games as a senior, didn't have a junior season, and played three games as a sophomore.
Pretty clear it is not complete.

I mean, there's a reason that you don't want to stare down receivers, but "having film on him" doesn't really matter except insofar as it gives DBs confidence to break in front of a receiver (because he's not actually looking you off, etc). But it also depends on play design and a bunch of other things and might not be a problem in this offense if we keep running 2/3 of the time.
Re: Coach Shaw Needs an Intervention -
washingtonismoney - 09-28-2017
So, I mean, I'm not sure Costello is staring down receivers. It looks like he's just got his OODA loop running fast -- he acquires his target quickly and hits it. "staring down" to me implies waiting a loooonggg time with your eyes trained on one guy.
The tell-tale sign of a QB staring down receivers is DBs breaking on the ball. We don't see that. Of course it may be UCLA's DBs are simply so bad they can't pull it off.
