Man oh man, I can't wait to watch this later tonight or tomorrow AM. Had to duck out at half time and was encouraged by what I saw but it seemed unlikely we'd come back, let alone demolish them in the fourth. McPhee is a fourth quarter machine. She is the opposite of so many of our players in the past - rather than get tight under pressure, she transforms and plays so freely.

Winning against two quality teams on the road and seizing a piece of first place should dispel many of our early season ghosts.  But we probably won't be able to count on another 31 point half from Britt if we meet Oregon in the Pac 12 tournament.  Can we finish out our regular season with consistent performances?  Can we beat C.al twice in week?  Will we overlook two dangerous Washington teams on our final road trip?  Or will we keep getting better, climb the RPI, and prime ourselves for a deep NCAA run?

Next up is Utah and Colorado this upcoming weekend. Utah is a deceptively solid team and I hope we don't have a letdown after this emotionally exhausting weekend. Luckily, we are playing at Maples and we have 4-5 days to recover. Hopefully Kiana & Britt won't feel any lingering effects and will be okay after their scary collision.

Consistency is the key thing right now. We've kept it up for two weeks now, can we extend it to a third? The perfect complement to Brit's amazing game today would be a brobdingnagian game by another player, to send a message to opponents that they can't just key in on McPhee on defense, whether it's the conference tourney or the NCAA tournament.

It would be awesome if Smith can replicate a little of that second Ohio State game magic and put in a 20-pt or more performance in one of our remaining 6 regular season games.

You can watch it now on ESPN replay.

I think the odds are good that McPhee gets national player of the week?

A plethora of satisfying wins since I started watching in 1997-98. But just lately, today's plucking of the Nike$ ranks right up there with 2017's conference championship win over OSU and the last two NCAA wins over the Little Miss Muffets.

If you watch a replay closely, in Half 2 both Hebard and Ionescu get seriously rattled enough to glare at the zebras who were calling a game at Matthew Knight Arena.

As for Ms. McPhee, here's the original Squirmy Hermie scoring machine:

On my way home from picking up food after the game, nearly crashed my car after seeing a woman wearing a "Utah Law" t-shirt.

NoooOOoOoooooooo.

Way too superstitious.

Re: WBB: Stanford 78 Oregon 65, McPhee with 31 in the 2nd half - 81alum - 02-04-2018

A few notes from the replay.

First, in the first half Sniezek guarded Sabally on the perimeter.  That is 5'8" vs. 6'4".

Second, I thought I remembered Williams getting a block on a taller player.  She blocked McGwire!  That is 5'8" vs. 6'5"!  McGwire must bring the ball down pretty low on her perimeter shots.

Third, I was able to focus on Hebard and saw what we did to her in the second half.  We fronted her, often with smaller players.  That is whenever she got deep into the paint we would have a quick guard get in front of her to deny the pass.  There were times when Smith or Johnson would leave Hebard to defend closer to the perimeter, and McPhee or Sniezek would be "on" Hebard.  Lob passes could have killed us.  I bet Tara saw on tape that Oregon doesn't or can't lob effectively.  If we play them in the Pac 12 tournament, I expect that Oregon will have learned how to lob.  Once though it was our bigs on her.  Kaylee and Alanna sandwiched her, effective because the person doubling came from behind where Hebard couldn't see and trapped her by surprise.

While Brit was absolutely fabulous in the second half, the rest of team did an excellent job setting screens, spreading the offense to open spaces for her, and sliding off picks as diversions. Brit also did an excellent job helping out doubling on Hebard. A really great team effort.

According to the Register Guard about Kiana's collision:

Quote:With 3:06 remaining in the third quarter, McPhee and backcourt mate Kiana Williams collided while going after a rebound.  “My tooth hit her nose,” McPhee said.  Williams, whose afternoon ended early after she scored 14 points, required stitches. Stanford coach Tara VanDerveer was able to joke about the procedure after beating Oregon for the 24th time in the last 25 meetings.  “They were slow to do those stitches, too,” VanDerveer quipped. “At home it would have been faster.”

And this from Graves about trying to defend Britt:

Quote:"We ran every zone, we tried to trap her when we could, she got away," UO coach Kelly Graves said. "I thought we were on our heels in the second half all the way around and that hurt us. Once she starts to feel it like that, that's what great players do. She's a senior, that kid wanted to win that game.  "And she did."  Graves warned his team between halves to keep close tabs on McPhee, figuring she was due for a breakout after her first-half struggles, only to watch his prediction come true.

The quotes from the press conference were about as you would expect, with Tara praising her team and Britt praising her team.  One bit of insight, a reporter asked what the halftime adjustment was to shut Hebard down:  "We haven't played them for a long time, and I think our team had to be reminded that this is what she likes to do, and we need to do something about it.  We worked harder to not let her get in deep and get her spot, I thought Britt did a really nice job of doubling, and we tried to make other people make shots....Our team this year has done a really good job of focusing on the key people."

Loved where they said “McPhee... and we’re going to have to see more of Britney McPhee in this second half.”  Almost as if they were foreshadowing something.
