I'm no recruitnik . . . but you don't have to be to see that this was a major failure on the part of the staff.  Hopefully just a one-year blip, but aficionados on the  other site are less sanguine.  Very rational and fact-based posters (I'm thinking Matt Squeri, in particular) have painted a pretty grim picture of the staff's recruiting strategy and efforts of late (2018 a disaster; 2019 not much better in terms of early offers, getting on sufficient number of radars, etc.).

That is troubling.  And still something I don't really "get."  I've been a consistent critic of Shaw as a game caller and offensive mind; but I've always believed Shaw is an excellent rep for the university and role model for many young men.  And I've found his recruiting to be at least good, on average.  It's troubling that there was such a glaring ball drop here.

Which site is Squeri posting on?

Don't know, but he sometimes shares his thoughts on twitter @mattsqueri.  Bonus, you get to learn a ton about national security and (especially) North Korea (Matt used to sit on the Korea desk at the Pentagon).

Is high school football that much better in the South? What makes football in Florida so great? This year, 9 of the 33 five star players on Rivals are from Florida, with another 5 from Georgia. California does have 5, North Carolina and Texas have 2, and no other state has more than 1.

Each year, it seems that the South is the mecca for talent. Is that really the case? Thoughts? Theories? Does Jimmy the Greek's inebriated hypothesis all those years ago actually hold water?

The South being a mecca for talent isn't just recruiting hype, it is borne out by the numbers of FBS starters, FBS All Americans, NFL draftees, NFL players, etc. Probably a number of contributing factors, but primarily due to football in the south being so culturally significant and players getting involved in organized football with coaching from a very young age.

Interesting article linked below that details which states produce the most NFL players based on when babies are born to when they mature to the age of being NFL players.  I think if it were mostly a product of getting involved in organized football at a young age, there would not be a cluster of states in the Southeast that seem to produce NFL talent at a rate higher than other states as I would think that Texas would rank higher than 11th in terms of per capita production.

You can compare the demographics of the top rated per capita states to other states to assess the aforementioned hypothesis.

I'd like to see a point graph comparing average statewide SATs to NFL talent per capita.

Thanks Slide, maybe I'll give it a shot at the end of summer.  I finally pulled the plug on the Bootleg this Fall.

Doc and Remotey are great theatre. Life is way to short to worry about anything. I have finally found nirvana in semi- retirement. Empowering to say no, not interested.
