Yeah let’s create board space for threads on the sailing team and ultimate frisbee season. Those are real crowd pleasers.

2006, y’all just created the cyber equivalent of the participation trophy.

Great! In the next few days, our women's basketball team is participating in the finals of the Victoria Invitational against top ten team Mississippi State, our men's soccer team is participating in its NCAA Tournament Sweet Sixteen game against Virginia Tech, our women's swimming and diving team is participating in the U.S. Open Championships, and our women's soccer team is participating in the College Cup final four matchup against longtime rival UCLA.

I dearly hope that all this participation yields trophies. Lots and lots of trophies.

There’s a reason why newspapers put some stories on the front page and others somewhere else. And why magazines have cover stories.

But sure, let’s make football fans wade through 80 posts if we don’t agree with their views.

FWIW, merging about five threads into this one allowed the prediction thread to get back to the front page.

There's a simple way to fix that, BC. . . .

As to your procedural point, if there are 80 posts about Stanford football's decline, why wouldn't they be in a single thread? Why make people look all over the place and decide which thread to post a response in? This is board management 101. Trust me, lots of boards do this, and many are even more heavy-handed about it, believe it or not.

As to your substantive point, Stanford has brought home the Directors' Cup for 25 straight years. Football has played but one small role in that alongside anywhere from 16-19 other sports. And while many of our best board contributors equal ESPN's commentary and analysis for college football, I've yet to find any even close to as well informed sources for following our men's and women's basketball, men's and women's soccer, men's and women's tennis, men's and women's golf, women's volleyball, men's and women's cross country and track and field, men's gymnastics, and men's and women's swimming and diving -- just to name, off the top of my head, the sports I've learned so much about in the past few years because of the tremendous contributions of my fellow Cardboarders. Seriously, y'all provide an embarrassment of riches with your knowledge and the amount of (free) labor you put into crafting thoughtful posts to share your expertise with the rest of us.

As a moderator, one deputized task is to ensure the board's strengths are prominently on view, and one chief way to do that is thread management.

This is so lame.

This is asinine 101.

See ya Cardboard.

Newspapers also have editors and they will not have five stories that make variations of the same point in the same issue.

Moreover, by condensing related threads, a football fan can find everything they are looking for in a single thread, rather than having to click through five different threads.  Presumably, if the topic was of interest, you would have waded through the 80 posts, just through five different threads.

No posts or threads were deleted or locked.

The one downside that I can see is that in merged threads, it might be a bit more difficult to see who is replying to whom, since the posts are merged in the order the were written. Unfortunately, I did not have a chance to preview the merged thread to be sure it was still cohesive before merging them.

Apparently, you haven't been reading the Washington Post or the New York Times of late. Same could be said for the Chronicle.

Since this is a suck thread the Missouri job is open. Good job for Lance, perhaps he can take Tavita with him.

To your point, they weren't deleted, but simply buried in an unreadable, jumble of a thread. Same result. Slicker censorship.

RE: Catch-all merged Stanford football sucks thread (if your thread disappeared it was... - CornFed - 11-30-2019

I have an idea.  Perhaps we could have a single thread dedicated to Stanford football and a separate thread solely dedicated to all issues related to women's basketball, and a separate thread dedicated to everything about women's volleyball, and a separate thread focusing exclusively on SF Bay Area professional sports, and a separate thread which picks up each new development about graphene (oh yeah.  We already have that).

Thread clutter will be self correcting.  If threads aren't drawing replies, they will fade away pretty quickly.  If the prediction thread is falling to the second sheet, maybe there is not strong enough interest, or if there is and it is nonetheless being foisted onto the second page, is it just too much trouble to click "Next"?

I, too, am frustrated at the rush to jump to the front of the parade with all our pent up frustrations about David Shaw's inability to be Jim Harbaugh, or to recruit worth spit, or to keep from throwing everybody under the bus.  But who cares?  Apparently, I am not as perfectly efficient with my time management as all of you and the extra clicking does not cause me undue duress.  And I have to point out that saying that you are "tired of having the board cluttered with different exceptionally smug threads, all of whose point is to talk about how bad Stanford football is and how armchair fans and Monday morning quarterbacks would do it better" does in fact sound like censorship.

I'm in favor of a free market of ideas no matter how chaotic it becomes.  The only time I feel intervention might be appropriate is when there is excessive hostility and ill will.  I am grateful for the reminder that was provided about the genesis of this site and its raison d'etre.  I get frustrated with what I feel is undue negativity, but I try to resist the impulse to respond in kind when someone is dismissive or snarks at me.  If we were all too polite and "sensitive" there would probably be a lot less interesting discussion.

Cornfed, you and I both know that markets are fictional entities created, regulated, and maintained by the state. Consider the moderators your friendly Federal Reserve Board of Governors, and our Admin the Chair. Every so often, interest rates need to be raised or lowered, or money injected into, or withdrawn from, the system. Those decisions aren't always perfect, and sometime receive criticism. But they're necessary to maintain a functional market over the long term.

The real world alternative is the state of nature, and the online alternative, following Godwin's law, is the dissent to 4-chan levels of quality of discourse.

I don't think it is too much to ask of the poster who just has posted his 110th "Shaw sucks" comment to post his 111th in the same thread.
JMO, though.

Seems like a challenge. 111 ways Shaw sucks. Perhaps a new thread with that title.

AFWIW, I hope Shaw is wildly successful at Stanford.

For what it's worth, considering the injuries that Stanford players have suffered this season, I think the team has done o.k.

Knowing what I know about Cornfed, I don’t think that argument will hold much sway. I think the better argument would be to say that he or anyone else is free to start their own discussion group and let the marketplace of ideas hold sway.  There are of course other discussion groups , many with different feels, and one of the reasons I’ve moved here is that very same marketplace of ideas; I didn’t enjoy being on those other sites.  Many people I know from those other sites are now here, proving that the marketplace of ideas works.

As long as we have a Suck Thread, Stanford’s defense sucks.

That is generally self evident, though Jovann swann wants a word.
