I guess we knew that was coming.
Heard that too. He looks like a different player. Also, through less than three quarters, he's thrown for more yards against LSU than anyone. Ever.
CardCrimson, if you saw the same graphic that I recall, Costello has thrown now for more yards against LSU than any MSU QB ever (through 2 1/2 quarters). He might set an overall record if LSU does not cover or tackle any better than what I am watching.
He set the SEC single game record with 623 yards. At LSU.

The alternative will be much worse.
You don't think a creative OC with the keys to actually calling the offense would be an improvement? Think KJ made a pretty definitive statement today, both with his performance and his postgame chat. . . .

KJ under Leach becomes a top 20 nfl pick after being on the bench at Stanford under Shaw and Tavita.
The idiocy of assigning that to anything other than coaching (to include scheme) is just that... idiocy.
I’m happy for the guy. He gets a stanford degree, gets to play under a coaching (well, offensive) legend, and is now on the radar as a potential first round pick. All he has to do is run the 4-5 plays in the air raid offense for the rest of this year and he will make a lot of money. MSU has enough around him to protect him.
Yes, Stanford looks bad, but only for now. Leach is a very special coach. Tavita and Shaw are not in any way special offensive coaches. Just ask KJ.
Has Shaw commented publicly on K.J.'s successful MSU debut?
I read somewhere that Shaw complimented both KJ and Leach. Sorry, can't remember where.

Thanks for posting that, BC. I had forgotten that guy was shown in the fourth quarter of a blow-out win (for Stanford). Style and fortitude!

A closer look at Shaw versus Leach:
2011 (pre-Leach): Stanford 44, WSU 14. Pac-12 North: Stanford 8-1, T1st; WSU 2-7, 6th
2012: Stanford 24, WSU 17. Pac-12 North: Stanford 8-1, T1st; WSU 1-8, 6th
2013: Stanford 55, WSU 17. Stanford 7-2, T1st; WSU 4-5, T4th
2014: Stanford 34, WSU 17. Stanford 5-4, 2nd; WSU 2-7, T5th
2015: Stanford 30, WSU 28. Stanford 8-1, 1st; WSU 6-3, 3rd
2016: WSU 42, Stanford 16. WSU 7-2, 2nd; Stanford 6-3, 3rd
2017: WSU 24, Stanford 21. Stanford 7-2, T1st; WSU 6-3, 3rd
2018: WSU 41, Stanford 38. WSU 7-2, T1st; Stanford 6-3, 3rd
2019: WSU 49, Stanford 22. Stanford 3-6, T5th; WSU 3-6, T5th
So over Leach's 8 years at WSU, he was 4-4 versus Stanford. His conference record was 36-36, while Shaw's was 50-22. But this isn't a fair comparison since, during his first few years, Leach had to put out a dumpster fire and bring in players to fit his system.
So to be fair, let's look at the most recent 4 years. Leach was 4-0 versus Stanford. His conference record was 23-13, while Shaw's was 22-14. So Shaw had a "Leach problem," but since the season is more than one game, I don't think Leach's system--including all phases of the game--was/is light years better overall than Shaw.
I don't really have anything against Leach. His offenses are certainly entertaining to watch, even when his team loses, but I cringe at times when I hear Leach speak about non-football topics. I find David Shaw's offense entertaining when Stanford wins, which, fortunately, is more often than not. I'm happy to hear David Shaw talk about non-football topics, and I would hold him up as a role model to my son.
In any case, I really hope KJ continues to succeed this year, and I'd love to watch him play on Sundays next year.

One note about Leach is that going 22-14 at WSU is probably a more impressive accomplishment than going 23-13 at Stanford. WSU's all-time record is 556-560-45 (under .500), while Stanford's all-time record is 657-467-49 (.581), and while we have challenges getting recruits admitted, Washington State has a lot of challenges getting players to go there.

Good points, BC. If my calculations are correct, Stanford's overall conference record, going back to the PCC in 1919, is 356-307-20. If I count each tie as 1/2 win and 1/2 loss, that comes out to a 53.6% win percentage. Shaw's overall conference record the last four years is 61.1%.
WSU's overall record is 481-525-38. I'm not going to take the time to calculate the overall conference record, but I'd be willing to bet that it is below 50% wins. So I suppose from that perspective Leach's record from the past four years is more impressive than Shaw's.
If you really want to be impressed, consider what Bill Snyder did at K-State.

WSU's all-time record against teams currently in the Pac-12 (including teams now in the Pac-12 before they entered the conference) is 264-425-29 (.383, excluding ties).
From here:
http://www.winsipedia.com/washington-state
Stanford's equivalent is 366-324-25, which is pretty close to what you got (allowing for inclusion of games against current conference teams before they joined the conference).

Yep, BC, we've proved your point, but why not add one more data point? Overall Stanford is 40-29-1 versus WSU. So Leach's 4-game win streak is very impressive. The only longer WSU streak was in the late '50s/early '60s, when they won 8 in a row versus Stanford.
I'm still standing by my earlier statement that I don't think that Leach's overall system, including all phases of the game, is light years better than Shaw's, but it's great to have the additional context that shows that Leach's results were much better than the historical norm at WSU.

I saw the headline for this related story and thought that Leach had been reading the Cardboard - "Mississippi State's Mike Leach compares cardboard fans to 'Twilight Zone' episode".
But he was just commenting on the cutouts in the stands for the LSU game.
