I don't even think that was Tavita. The pair of eyes and half-face I saw didn't look that much like him. Pretty funny.

Yes indeed. Dr. "Don't call her Czar" Cody had edicted that no contact sports, at any level, are allowed in Santa Clara County. No 49ers, no Cardinal, no Spartans, no Sharks, nobody. The only county in the country with such a edict.

I suspect they may stay in the Northwest even after the Oregon State game to play the one game they missed vs. Wazzu during the weekend of the conference championship.

Of course, that's a very long 3-week road trip, and it's a lot to ask of the whole team for a presumably meaningless game.  It would also be surprising if they don't end up having any COVID issues after spending that long on the road, presumably eating in restaurants and being exposed to many people in hospitality outside their bubble. Dr. Cody's decision definitely put the team, their families (when they go home for the holidays), and their communities at greater risk, not less. It would have been more rational if coordinated at a regional or at least statewide level, but as it stands, nothing good has been achieved.

So... For Dec. 19 we get WAZZU in Pullman -- in the snow?
Last month on Dec. 19 during Pac-12 Champ game, the other teams were going to play their same ranked team in the other division.
Could be UCLA for Stanford (?) in the Rose Bowl... in December.  Instead, with COVID, we get the Snow-blower Bowl?
The two week ahead forecast for Pullman Dec. 19 is "Rain / Snow Showers" and 39F.  For a Calif team on the road.

To be clear, the game in Pullman is pure speculation on my part, because the team is in the Northwest, the schedule for that date was left open, and Wazzu is the one game that was cancelled.  But thinking it through, if Washington loses to Oregon next week, then certainly the make-up of the Apple Cup would take precedence. We might get one of the LA teams or nobody at all.

I would think they would try to stick to the North vs South plan, of course depending on whether any teams are not available to play.

Would have been nice to score more than 7 pts in second half, but at least they weren't needed.

You must make plays to win games and Stanford made many.

Mills really is an uber talented QB. His quick feet and release on the first 3rd down conversion of the last drive was a tremendous example of that. Nick Mullens, an NFL QB, can't do that.

We only had three possessions that didn't end at the end of the game.  We had one TD, one punt, and the fumble.  We were certainly in field goal range and had first and ten at the Washington 12 at the end of the game, so we could have scored more had we needed to.  To be honest, the last drive 14 plays, 79 yards, nearly 8(!) minutes, was the most impressive of the game.  We converted two third downs and a fourth down.  Mills had a couple big third down passes, and at the end, Jones had runs of 3, 11, 2, 5, 2, 3 against a defense that was selling out to stop the run.

To be honest, one of the most satisfying things to watch in the 2009 - 2015 era was Stanford get the ball in the fourth quarter with a one-score lead and and not relinquish the ball to the other team.  We'd run a 10+ play drive that chewed up 5+ minutes and ended with us taking a knee.  This was a nice reminder of those days.

BC

Am looking forward to watching the first three quarters - what I saw in Q4 was vintage Shaw, bailed out by uber-elite QB play from Mills (and a ridiculous catch by Fehoko).  I could not believe the run plays on 1st and second downs on the last drive - both led to third and longs.  It's okay to run - but in that formation where no one is out wide, Stanford runs to the heavy side every time.  It led to 1, 1, and 0 yards (the back-to-back same play after the first first down was especially exasperating).  Anyway, it all worked out in the end, but man, it felt like Stanford had some good fortune there (and elite QBs can make good fortune).

But perhaps watching the first 3 quarters will make those formations/plays more reasonable.

As stated elsewhere, I thought the best call of the last drive was the fourth down where Shaw again lined up in tight formation, heavy left. But the RB got the ball and ran right (presumably the called play) for the first down to ice the game.  Nice!  [BTW, right decisions to burn clock before snapping and to go for it on fourth down late, instead of kicking FG].

Congrats to team and coaching staff.  That one has to feel really good.

Who says Shaw doesn't change.  The old Shaw would have run it on third and 9, then punted on fourth and 6 (but we would have had a defense that would have stopped UW).

And I think going for it on fourth down was a no-brainer.  It would have been different if we had been up by 6, and a made field goal puts you up two scores with less than a minute left (though even then, going for it is probably the right call), but since we were up 5, UW would have had to score a touchdown regardless, a made field goal gives them an opportunity for a return, and a missed field goal gives them much better field position.  A made 4th down conversion clinches the game, while a missed one leaves UW 30 seconds to go 84 yards (of course Oregon went 75 yards against Cal in 23 seconds!)

The heavy set was quite successful throughout the game, as good as it's been in some time. Hinton makes a big difference.

I’m not a doctor, but based on this post game photo, it looks like Wedington’s left wrist is in a cast or a brace and Michael Wilson may have a high ankle sprain. The cast on Wedington is hard to see in the pic, but I also thought I noticed it in a sideline shot during the game.

If there’s a silver lining, at least neither guy tore an ACL.

The most impressive and complete game played by Stanford since 2018. Kudos to players and coaches.

Gutsy calls on the final drive - the 3rd down pass to Fehoko and the 4th down run to ice the game. That final 7+ min drive was vintage Stanford.

Mills really is an uber talented QB. His quick feet and release on the first 3rd down conversion of the last drive was a tremendous example of that. Nick Mullens, an NFL QB, can't do that.

Mills was fantastic today.   He did not have a lot of big windows to throw the ball into. And he showed some pocket presence made some plays outside the pocket made a lot of different types of throws.  He also made great decisions. And one of his best was actually on what I believe was supposed to be a reverse. He had somebody coming around to pitch the ball too but not only would it have been completely blown up it actually could’ve been a disaster because there were several players right there a pitch could’ve picked off.  He kept it and basically just fell  forward for about a yard.

Second-half seven points little bit misleading. For one they didn’t have the ball a whole lot. Only three drives before the four minute drill to win it.  Second drive,  they had a first down at about midfield, but a second down pass was dropped. And  then the Jones fumble on the next drive.  They  only punted once.

And of course ball control was absolutely crucial in this game. Because they were simply helpless in the secondary against Washington. They did a pretty decent job against the run. (They at least avoided giving up a big run). But man they could do absolutely nothing against the pass

This is a great analysis.  I only managed to watch the first half, as it was past midnight over here by the time the second half started.

The first half was a thing of beauty: four possessions, four scores and an offense that looked to be the absolute best combination of pass and run with an O-line actually firing on all cylinders as in years past.  So refreshing after the offensive ineptitude in the first three games.

When I signed off, however, I was worried that the turtle might emerge to vitiate this great offensive productivity and that Stanford would hang on for dear life against a Dawg team that 1) has proven this year it can come back from a 21-point deficit and 2) will be prepared to throw everything at a beleaguered Cardinal defense.  At that juncture, I predicted Stanford would hold on for a 30-27 win, and with that I was not far off.

But actually, as Lex points out, the turtle never really reared its head.  In fact, the two halves were rough mirror images of each other with a few key differences leading to the final margin of victory.  In the first half, Stanford had four possessions and scored TD, TD, TD and FG.  The Dawgs had three possessions that went punt, punt and FG.  Hence, the 24-3 halftime score.

In the second half, the Huskies scored on all four of their possessions: TD, TD (blocked EP), TD and FG, leading to 23 points.  Stanford also had four possessions, which ended in TD, punt, fumble and victory formation.  The fumble could have ended up costing the game, but a fortunate holding penalty on the overturned TD pass forced the final Husky FG.  And then, with 7 min. 47 sec. left on the clock (normally enough time for at least two possessions, sometimes more), Stanford TOP football once again came to life and salted the win away.  This final drive essentially meant that the rest of the 2nd half consisted of only 22 min. and 13 sec.  The difference in the final score: Washington got only a FG on its one scoring possession of the first half, while Stanford got a TD on its scoring possession and blocked a UW extra point attempt.  That's the 5-point difference.  As Outsider fan notes, it would have been nice to score more than 7 points in the 2nd half, but there weren't many scoring opportunities; and not scoring on the final drive and killing the clock was vintage Stanford football.

Congratulations to Shaw and the team.  I fully expected our team to get thrashed, but was so pleased to see some semblance of earlier incarnations of Shaw football.  The injuries to Wedington and Wilson are very unfortunate: Wedington has had lots of bad luck staying healthy.  He is a stand-out who could shine under the right circumstances, but so far the injury bug has bitten him repeatedly.

Looking forward, the Beavers had to play Utah without their starting QB (Gebbia) and their star running back (Jefferson).  Does anybody know their status for this coming Saturday?  If Jefferson is back, stopping him will be the key to victory.

I thought the threesome of Robinson, Booker and Schaffer played well. Robinson and Schaffer have definitely surprised on the upside for me.
