Mills really struggled with the pressure the Niners put on him. But he did make some very nice throws when he had decent pass protection. Brandin Cooks was almost the only weapon he had.
But... Trey Lance was much more impressive. When he has the experience that Mills has starting, I think he will be the superior player. That doesn't mean Mills can't be very good with a strong team around him, just that Lance demonstrated why he was drafted higher.
Justin Reid is quite a player. He's gonna be a future Pro Bowler and get paid.

Lance showed some promise. Had a nice second half. Mills had no chance. Was constantly under pressure (especially in second half) and has really nothing to work with other than Cooks. Texans are atrocious offensively. Line stinks. Backs are retreads. One decent receiver.
Take a look at what happened to Lawrence this year. That team is beyond awful. Made worse by a horrific choice of HC. He’s talented enough to survive it. After all, Peyton threw 28 ints his first year.
Before the draft I read someone tied to the NFL who was asked who the best rookie quarterback would be. His response was whoever got drafted by the 49ers. The reason being, obviously, that he would have the best supporting cast surrounding him by a long shot.
As it is the best has been Mac Jones. For the same reason.

Seriously Lex? Mac Jones has the best supporting cast by a long shot? I can't think of a single player they have, besides Jones. Same BS argument about the guy as last year: it's all about the players around him. Perhaps he makes the players around him better. Ask Cam. Cam Newton couldn't do very well with the same guys last year.

I think Lawrence is destined to be the next Sam Darnold, unfortunately for them both. Just mediocre.
Today, I agree that Lance looked exceptionally promising, but it was just one game. Not ready to guess whether he'll have a better career than any of the other rookie QBs.
Mills continues to show that he can make really nice, accurate throws when he has time. Can he consistently (over 4 quarters) make the right decisions? One pass in the first half really should have been a pick six for the 49ers.
I do think Mills has probably shown enough to get a shot to really compete for a starting job in the NFL, be it at Houston or elsewhere.

There is nothing mediocre about Lawrence. He was the highest rated QB coming into the draft since Luck. Who was the highest since Elway.
No comparison to Darnold. First year QBs struggle almost universally. Particularly when they are on horrid teams.

Newton stinks. I’m not knocking Jones. He’s played well. NE is significantly better, however, than Jacksonville, Jets, Texans and Bears.

Lance isn’t Murray or Jackson. When he learns when to run he will be effective. He also needs to work on his touch. It’s easy to toss the flat pass to Mitchell who was uncovered and not easy to float the ball into a tight window when it’s necessary. Since Lex and almost everyone else has Jimmy traded the most important personnel decision in 2022 will be to secure a backup who can win a game or two when Lance gets hurt because Lance will get hurt.

Mills had himself a day against the AFC’s top seed.
23/33 for 301 yards, 3 TD, 0 INT. He now moved ahead of Carr for most yards by a rookie in franchise history, despite only playing in 13 games, and having one of the worst supporting casts in all of football.

Beyond the stats he made some impressive NFL throws today.

Equally importantly, he made it through the year without getting hurt. Interesting to see what happens going forward. He has shown he can do the job. Do the Texans bank on that and act accordingly? The supporting cast needs help. They should focus there, but will they?

I have Garrapolo traded or released because if he’s not the move to get Lance was idiotic. They need to dump his contract - or at least some of it.
Right now they are getting boat raced by the Rams. Garrapolo has no business playing this game. He’s hurt. Not his fault that defense can’t stop Rams. But the fumble (bad thumb) and int are on Garrapolo. He shouldn’t be out there
Edit. OT. Garrappolo has unreal drive to tie it. Wrong again!! :)

The Texans certainly now have some cap space and a bunch of quality draft picks to build up over the next couple years. Could be a good situation for Mills if they do it right. 2 1sts and 2 3rds both this year and next year, and their cap space next year is bonkers.
RE: Davis Mills -

They need protection for Mills in a bad way. But if they do the smart thing (this is the Texans), they've finished blowing up the team and should be rebuilding quite soon.
