Fundraising is a concern because a) Bernie spent like a drunken sailor on football & MBB in particular while Pac-12 revenues were declning, b) sadly his personal bailout fund passed away recently, and c) Bernie has damaged the relationship with former athletes in particular with his awful handling of the cutting varsity sports and he can't be trusted to fix that.

Jaiden Delaire entered the transfer portal tonight and Sam Beskind entered yesterday. Both were expected departures.

Yes, good for him. He has size and skills. Hopefully, another coach will improve his tools, and give him rules re what he should and should not be doing. Though his numbers are OK, I thought he didn't improve this year, and looked to actually regress.

Delaire was not part of that. He was expected to leave, and only has eligibility remaining because of the Covid year.

He (rightly, IMO) lost his starting job due to his wild inconsistency. He ended up playing season-low minutes off the bench in the last two games.

Delaire made the three-point shot that beat the ducks at the buzzard.

Muir and Cal's hapless AD should be fired for this. Some can argue that he wouldn't have taken the job in Berkeley or Stanford, but that's not really the point. It's more about both guys allowing their programs to sink to the point a coach like Golden in their backyard wouldn't consider them. I'd be livid if I were supporting either program financially in any way.

The same could be said for the current St. Mary's coach.

Am I missing something about how Golden has said he wouldn't consider Cal or Stanford, neither of whom has a current opening?

You are not missing anything. OF's point doesn't make sense when there is no active coaching search happening at either school. There is zero basis to say he "wouldn't consider" either school, besides (valid) personal frustrations with the state of the program.

RE: Haase is Back For Another Year... - BostonCard - 03-18-2022

The way I read it was that the AD’s failed by not firing their coaches in order to hire Golden, and if they didn’t do so because they were worried that Golden would not take the job, then they should be fired for that.

theres a certain logic to that, but the third possibility, that the Stanford and Cal AD’s have a higher view of their coaches and are more optimistic about the future than we are was not contemplated.

More broadly, firing a coach just to bring in a guy you think will be the savior first work as well as you might think.

I get the visceral need to play devil's advocate, but winning college programs do hire coaches to be saviors. And if they don't get the job done, they are fired so another savior can be hired.  Florida is the school we are talking about here. I think that school knows a little something about winning in the major sports.

"No openings for a coach." Really? You make openings and make people available when serious about winning. Stanford and Cal have had years to witness Golden's abilities right in their backyard. Who knows, maybe he was approached by a Stanford liaison, which is why I included "and if he wouldn't consider" in my initial post on this topic.

I can't even fathom that Cal is looking at extending Mark Fox, but that's why Cal hasn't been to a Rose Bowl or Final Four in what, 70 years? Stanford only has to look at Cal to see what your future in the major sports is when you stop trying to win.

Actually, winning college programs don't hire coaches to be saviors. They don't need to. They are already there. Programs that are not winning are the ones that hire coaches. Most of them continue to be not winning. Florida was in the market because their coach went to Georgia. He was good at Florida, but not great, He was not a "savior". It is certainly true that some coaching hires work great. Most don't. That is why there are so many of them.

It's hard to figure out what your (and BC's) point is . . . is it never hire replacement coaches because "ya never know" and they're likely NOT going to be saviors?

That strikes me as an odd approach.  You keep your coach if you think he's meeting your standard; if not, he goes and you hope the next guy - whom you've done some diligence on - meets program standards.  It shouldn't be that hard conceptually.

P.S.  Is USF a 'winning program?'

RE: Haase is Back For Another Year... - BostonCard - 03-18-2022

No, I agree with you Teejers (we might disagree on the threshold, but yeah, at some point you realize the coach is not cutting it and let him go). I just don’t subscribe to the idea that you would see a particular coach on the market and that he will fix everything, as, apparently OF saw with Golden.

Had Muir fired Haase, he should have tried to hire the best candidate for the job, who may, or may not have been Golden. But firing Haase just to be able to bring Golden in looks to be a fools errand.
