Was one of 10 finalists for the Senior CLASS Award ultimately won by Lexie Hull. GPA listed as 3.48.

Quote:The explosive scorer with a velvet-soft shooting touch averaged 17.6 points per game overall and 19.1 points a game in BIG EAST Conference play.

She was recognized as one of the five best shooting guards in the country by the Ann Meyers Drysdale Shooting Guard of the Year Award national committee.

Morris has DePaul's second and third-highest scoring games this season with 36 points against Vanderbilt at the Paradise Jam (U.S. Virgin Islands) and 35 at St. John's.

The sharpshooter from St. Louis scored in double figures 29 of DePaul's 33 games including 17 of the last 19. The 5-foot, 10-inch guard with a game-changing scoring touch is a big reason why the Blue Demons lead the nation in scoring at 87.3 points per game.

Morris scored 20 or more points 11 times this season.

Also - hadn't declared a major as of her senior year, or from what I can tell, as of when she entered the portal, which IMHO, doesn't bode well for getting accepted to a Stanford grad program, <IF> she would even apply.

RE: WBB transfer portal - TheFarm07 - 04-14-2022

The #3 recruit in last year's class, Saniya Rivers, announced her intention to join the transfer portal and leave South Carolina.

I have a theory that since the WNBA is so small, there are very few roster spots for each year's draft class and unlike college, it's not like a group of pro players rotate out every year as a new crop of college players enter, therefore players know college is the last best US-based spot for them to play significant minutes and therefore, they want to maximize their collegiate playing time, even if that means leaving a program after one year.

I know there are overseas leagues which are potentially more lucrative than the WNBA, but if I am not mistaken, the WNBA is still the premiere place you want to be, but with only 12 active teams and 12 roster spots, that's only 144 availabilities. Even with just three rounds in the draft, only a small fraction of the 36 players drafted will get a chance to make a roster and that's not considering many other players who graduate every year. I wish the WNBA could expand, even to four more teams, for two 8-team divisions, opening up 48 more roster spots, but that's probably not a realistic possibility soon, as we've seen even successful franchises like the Houston Comets, despite winning the league's first four championships, fold.

Since this phenomenon is so widespread across so many different programs, from the top (defending champion South Carolina) to the bottom (rebuilding Cal among others) and with multiple players transferring every year, I don't think we can just attribute it to one coach or system.

Just my two cents on a possible contributing factor.

South Carolina picked up a grad transfer pg from Gerogia Tech

Meyers to Maryland. Too bad - she was one of our best portal bets given her undergraduate credentials (though it didn't appear either she or we were doing much recruiting outreach).

RE: WBB transfer portal - 81alum - 04-15-2022

I am having a very difficult time getting interested or exciting by the game of musical chairs taking place now.  Not too concerned about grad transfers although also not excited by them.  Repelled by undergraduate program-shopping.  Serious fans get to know a lot about individual players and it is that level of interest that creates fan loyalty and investment in the team.  We are already limited (generally) to four years following a given player.  Every transfer chips away at that level of fan investment and hollows out the game.

It is precisely the reason I lost my interest in professional sports.  But if some of you think I am extreme about this subject, may I present my wife, who stopped being an avid Giants fan on May 11, 1972 and has not watched a single professional sports game of any kind since--nearly 50 years.  She still feels utterly betrayed.

RE: WBB transfer portal - chimera - 04-15-2022

I don't enjoy all the transfers either.  I feel bad for fans of teams like Oregon State, that just lost a bunch of starters to the portal.  I don't think the portal helps the game.  While it is great for players who want out of a situation they feel is not good, it creates chaos for the sport.  Many players in the portal will not find a good landing spot, will have to drop down a division or end up somewhere that is not any better for them than where they left.  Coaches can't keep a stable roster.  How can teams be good when they have to relearn the system every year when all the players shuffle in and out?  The players who do not transfer now risk seeing multiple transfers in at their position.  What if you were a player who did not play much for a couple of seasons, improving all the while and waiting for your chance to play a lot, only to find, oops, top transfer comes in at that position and you are now out of luck?  I guess you transfer...  In short I don't think all this instability is good for the sport, most of the players, the ones who like their team but see a revolving door on their roster that impacts how well the team functions and their own role, or the fans, who mostly don't enjoy the crazy roster turnover.  I also don't like that there will be fewer seasons where top teams have down years.  If teams can just reload through the portal yearly and never have to deal with poor recruiting out of HS, that will help top teams and hurt teams trying to build.

Between the portal and the NIL mess, my love for the sport is waning a bit.  It just feels like pro sports but with fewer controls.  The game has gotten more physical and uglier recently too.  Might be easier to teach defense and physicality than fancy offense if you have to teach your system to a team that has 50% new players every year.  Can't be good for team's learning to play well together.

May 11 1972. Willie Mays traded to the Mets I believe

RE: WBB transfer portal - Phogge - 04-15-2022

The Giants were going nowhere with Mays in 1972. Problem was that they telegraphed it and wound up with a nobody, Charlie Williams. The first domino was the Perry trade after the division winning season of '71 for the drunkard Sam McDowell. That was a Charlie Fox move because he disliked Gaylord and blamed the Father/Son film production team for "abducting" the pitcher on a two day shoot at his parents farm in North Carolina. I plead not guilty.

In the pipeline were Maddox, Matthews, Goodson, Kingman and others. They showed great promise in 1973 but Horace, without the brains of Chubb Feeney, now President of the NL, lost them all and ultimately was forced to sell. There was some bad luck involved as Goodson, a sweet swinging LH hitter, was lost chasing a popup and was never the same. Kingman was sold in 1973 to make payroll and soon Mathews was off to free agency and Maddox was traded for the malcontent Willie Montanez. The prized big guy, Bobby Bonds, was traded for the complete azzhole Bobby Murcer who once later said, "I was never a Giant."

It was painful to watch, especially from the top step of the stairs to the clubhouse where on occasion I would stand with a camera.

It was a complete destruction orchestrated by the Stoneham Family made all the more horrible because Horace was such a nice man. His advisors were all aged and failing. Only the farm director was doing his job by still sending terrific young players to the big club. But they all wound up in opponents' lineups.

Hadn't heard of Mays entering the portal - are you sure GPA and eligibility are OK?  And how about ball-handling skills? Kind of a must for us....  ;-)

Other than that - impressive Bob, impressive...

ding ding ding ding

She was a 14 years old and her Chinese immigrant Dad had introduced her to American culture by taking her to see Willie Mays while she grew up in California.  And then Willie Mays was gone, and she was bereft.  "But it was only a business decision" they said, and she said "but I didn't go to the games to watch a business, I went to watch Willie Mays."

RE: WBB transfer portal - Phogge - 04-15-2022

At least with pro sports nobody is trying to make it something its not.

College sports is now professional but colleges try to spin the BS about the "Student Athlete." Only a few actually aren't poseurs, your school among them. The question is whether Stanford will sell out to the football NIL gods.

RE: WBB transfer portal - Jskass - 04-15-2022

Okay so two unrelated thoughts:
1. As a Mets fan growing up, when we got Willie Mays our view was a mixture of excitement but disappointment that we got him when he was relatively late career.
2. Transfer portal - I am tempering my reaction by remembering that this year is likely an aberration due to pent-up demand. There is a one-time transfer without sitting out so next year it should return to more of a regular quantity. That is when we'll have a better sense of whether this is impactful (or to rephrase others' views, whether it really is ruining the game). So no need to say the sky is falling at this point.

Ki had an interesting take on the whole thing. And I wonder where A'ja was planning to transfer...

The shooting of any such teen is horrible news.  I believe it said she underwent two operations, so it must not have been minor wounds. I too hope she and the other victims all recover.

RE: WBB transfer portal - BACardinal - 04-18-2022

Alex Philippou (ESPNW) reported about this horrific incident and says Gayles is a USC commit.

"Gayles had decommitted from USC following the retirement of former coach Mark Trakh before recommitting to the Trojans under new coach Lindsay Gottlieb in August."

Kind of surprised there's not a slew of USF players in the portal. Sad story.

You don't get shot 10 times by accident.  This was clearly an attempted murder.  Amazing she survived.

Hopefully USF will settle.  If they want to fight the charges it may be years of depositions and court motions.   A wvb player filed a lawsuit against Stanford in March 2018 and they still haven't gotten to the point of picking a jury. Opinion from legal websites is Stanford will appeal if they don't prevail on defending all charges.
