OK, now that Al Horford has Covid and cases are spiking everywhere, with a variant even more transmissible than Omicron - we need to consider what might happen if more Celtics players and/or another one of the conference finalists has an outbreak.
When 1 or 2 on a single team are hit, not big deal, but it's entirely possible multiple players on a given team could test positive. Given the fact there is only one off day between all these games, it could really impact who wins the championship. Would the NBA possibly postpone games if too many players are out, and what would be too many players?
The Warriors probably had a good warning with Kerr being out last week, to make sure they are not taking any chances. But Horford was apparently seen at morning shoot around, possibly infecting other players Tuesday morning.
It looks like the Celtics can survive Horford being out if Robert Williams plays, but can't get by without Marcus Smart. Missing two starters in Game 1 was too much to ask for the C's to overcome. Just amazing how Grant Wiliams was 7-18 3pt FGs vs. Bucks on Sunday, but 1-2 against the Heat Tuesday. If Jimmy Butler continues to play as he is, "my" Celtics could go down, but I expect Smart to return and limit Butler when he does.
Really intrigued to see how the Warriors handle Luka and the Mavs. The W's seem to have more overall talent and an experience edge, that I expect to carry them into the Finals, but I love Luka's game and know he is a big game, clutch performer who can carry a team.

If I was the NBA I’d end testing and the protocol for the rest of the playoffs. Let the teams and players handle it as they would any virus. It’s been 2 years. Name me ONE NBA player that has had any serious consequences from Covid. From the perspective of NBA players, it’s no different than a flu at this point. And a mild one at that.

Am I the only one who sees the Warriors sweeping the Mavericks, or at minimum closing it in 5 games?
This feeling hit me prior to Game 1 of WCF, after watching everyone fixate on "can the W's stop Doncic?" without ever talking about what the Mavericks must contend with to beat the Warriors. The Warriors simply have more better players. Sometimes it's not that complicated.

Mavs won’t shoot that poorly every game. They had plenty of good looks, especially in first half. Warriors are the better team. But I don’t take too much from a Game 1.
W’s should win series. But i suspect it goes at least 6.

Mavs got beaten solidly by Phoenix in game 1 and 2. Got destroyed in Game 5. This series is a long way from over.
All season the Mavs had occasional games where the shooting just failed them. If the Warriors want to keep defending the three point line like last night (i.e. hardly at all), I welcome it.

true that. but the reason for masks is primarily to protect others, not the wearer - especially those over 60. for your plan to work, the teams would have to isolate in a bubble with no fans. with time i could name you a million americans who have suffered serious consequences from getting too close to someone with covid: death.

I picked Mavs to beat Suns, for full context, but think it's clear Grizzlies > Suns & Mavs.
The W's have the highest FG% and lowest FG% allowed of all remaining playoff teams, good for a +5.2 FG% differential. Dallas is the worst of all the remaining teams in both categories, with the 11th best -2.1 FG% differential of all playoff teams. If making baskets and stopping the other team from making them is the name of the game, the Warriors are winning that game over Mavericks because they have more better players.
Luka Doncic is GREAT and I love him as a player. Total badass, confident, respects the game. Unfortunately, his team just doesn't have the collective talent needed to get into an NBA Finals at this time. He needs a second All-Star at least to get him there.

Agreed. His Scottie Pippen or Klay Thompson or Kevin McHale needs to emerge...

1,028,014 in the USA, about one in six worldwide at the moment. 84.7 million cases in the USA, slightly more than 1/4th of the population.

LOL. Are we forgetting about Morant?
Anyway, your comments sound like they come from someone who saw few or no Mavericks game this year. I'm not saying the Mavs will win the series (as I said before game 1--I didn't have a strong sense of who would win the series). But you're making some pretty big conclusions from a single bad game. Like I said, you could've made similar conclusions after watching games 1 or 2 of the Phoenix series. Let's wait and see where we are after, say, 3 games.

I watched a few Dallas games after the Porzingus trade and was impressed. In fact, I was terrified the Mavs would eke out W's for the #3 seed up until the last game. But the playoffs are a different animal than the regular season and it looks to me like the Warriors have proven they are a better team now than they were two months ago. W's taking the series with Memphis - even without Morant for 3 games - was really impressive to me. They have just as many good players as the W's, IMO, maybe even more.
I like to make my predictions before series start because that's the real test of one's knowledge. I'm so confident in my prediction I don't need to wait until Game 3. I called my shot before they tipped Game 1. The Mavs (or W's) could make it a closer Game 2, but I don't see the W's dropping Game 2 if they are as superior as I believe they are. And I am certain the W's will win at least one game in Dallas, so w's in 4, 5 max.
Now you can rip me if Mavs win Game 2 or both 3 & 4. :)
Bad feeling about Celtics tonight. Horford still out. Derrick White is now out. Smart probably will play with limited ability. Not good.

Are you suggesting that fans are at risk from getting Covid from players with Covid? I highly doubt that. The much higher risk is getting it from the other fans.
Further, if you are in a high risk category - don’t go.
No worries, however, as there is no way NBA will end protocols etc.

Warriors were 1-3 against the Mavericks during the regular season. And now 1-0 against the Mavericks during the post-season.

family members, friends, trainers, and, sure, fans in the first few rows. and any of those can pass the virus on to their parents, aunts, uncles, teachers of their children, etc. that's how epidemics work. that's how you get to a million dead in the us alone. and counting. to bring a big number closer to home, 1 in 334 (in millions) equates to about 50 deaths for a group of 18000 (the size of an arena audience. no, not specifically the warriors arena; just visualize a group that size).
and that's just deaths. 25% of the us population has had covid. of those, 20% suffer from long covid. that's 5% of the population or 900 of a group of 18000. not sure why no nba players report long covid. being young doesn't help. maybe being in great shape does. if so, it won't help the spouses and kids that players infect.
i repeat: wearing masks is to protect others.

As much as I would like that to be the case, the reality is that this is not where we are as a country. We are just not in a position to rely on others to protect us, sadly. The best we can hope for is that others show some grace and understand that not everyone is in the same place health-wise or risk-tolerance-wise, and that we at least are not jerks about it if someone politely asks us to wear a mask. But I think most individuals who are not ready or able to let down their guard will have to take steps to protect themselves rather than relying on mutual protection.

What a difference having Al Horford and Marcus Smart makes for the Celtics. Wow.
Draymond Green said his team will not give up as many uncontested shots in Game 2 and they will get Steph & Klay going early, but also expects Mavs to start fast. Probably no more credible forecaster out there in terms of what dynamics to expect in Game 2.

indeed, thanks!
but the wearer can protest, "i have the right to choose!" my point was that you don't have the right to decline to protect others from communicable disease (syphillis, gonorrhea, aids, tuberculosis...and covid)
similar to condoms and std's: of course they protect the wearer, but the wearer sometimes says, "they should be optional; i'll take that risk."
useful and optional to protect the wearer. useful and required to protect others.
