I wonder how long the LIV is even going to be a thing. They're throwing tons of money at it, with precious little return. How long will the gravy train hold out? The PGA has been around since 1916.

Well they got a US tv deal, but with the CW not any major network. Broadcast deals will really decide how long it lasts. I don't expect it to last beyond this year. The interesting thing will be whether those who left the PGA Tour will be allowed back in.

During the offseason, Michael Thorbjornsen is showing once again that he's ready for the PGA Tour. He finished T20 at the DP World Tour's Dubai Desert Classic. He was tied for the lead after the second round.

Currently ranked #6, I'm looking forward to their spring season. Close to home they will host the Goodwin at Harding Park at the end of March and Pac-12s at home in late April

On the PGA side, our alumni are doing well so far this year (dating back to Sept 2022 when this season started):
- Joseph Bramlett has 3 Top 25 finishes in 10 starts and currently sits two shots off the lead at the AT&T @ Pebble Beach
- Brandon Wu has made 7 cuts in 10 starts and currently sits four shots off the lead at Pebble. He was playing this week with Condi as his amateur partner
- Maverick McNealy has 7 Top 25 finishes in 9 starts. He withdrew midway through the third round at Pebble with a shoulder injury. It's only a matter of time before Mav breaks through with his first PGA Tour win
- Patrick Rodgers 4 Top 25 finishes in 10 starts. He is not playing at Pebble

Sihwan Kim has left the PGA Tour and sold out to LIV

Sorry to hear about Mav, but agree he will soon break through.
Great to see Bramlett and Wu in contention today and playing together.    Would love to see one of them (or both) get hot this afternoon.
Go Stanford!

RE: Stanford MGolf Thread - winflop - 02-06-2023

Brandon Wu played solid today and finished T2 - his best finish every on the Tour. Bramlett T7 for his fourth Top 20 of the year which is a marked improvement from the past couple years where he has struggled to keep a card

RE: Stanford MGolf Thread - Spiny_Norman - 02-07-2023

Back to the 2023 Stanford golf team.

Pairings for the Amer Ari Intercollegiate are posted. Stanford's lineup will be Thorbjornsen, Vilips, Brown, Yang and Ng with Greyserman playing as an individual. This is the first tournament of the spring season for Stanford. Currently ranked #5.

It's a deep, quality field which includes #2 Auburn, #3 North Carolina, #4 Arizona State, #6 Texas Tech, #12 Georgia Tech, #14 (defending NC) Texas, #16 Pepperdine and #18 Oklahoma State.

Round 1 begins with a shotgun start tomorrow at 7:30 am Hawaii time. Fans can follow the scoring here - https://results.golfstat.com/public/leaderboards/gsnav.cfm?pg=team&tid=26901

RE: Stanford MGolf Thread - Spiny_Norman - 02-08-2023

Round 1 has been cancelled due to high winds. Stanford was really struggling when they called the golfers off the course, at +8 through 7 holes. I think that result will get tossed out since the round is cancelled.

Rounds 1 & 2 are now scheduled for tomorrow.

RE: Stanford MGolf Thread - Spiny_Norman - 02-09-2023

Due to persistent high winds, the entire tournament has been canceled.

Never heard of this happening before. I’ll get the inside skinny from Coach Ray next time I see him

RE: Stanford MGolf Thread - winflop - 02-18-2023

Let's try this again...

Men's golf (re)opens its spring season on Monday at PGA West in The Prestige.

I ran into Coach Ray this past week and he shared with me that he's never been involved with a tournament canceled due to high winds in his life - as a player or coach. He said that the wind was unlike anything he's ever seen. Balls sitting on a flat green were getting blown completely off the green, and the windshields of multiple coaches' carts got cracked or broken. Sounds brutal.

Lineups to come, likely tomorrow. I expect to see Thorbjornsen, Brown, Vilips, Ng, and Yang unless there are injuries I don't know about

RE: Stanford MGolf Thread - winflop - 02-19-2023

Lineup is as expected. Greyserman, Menon, and Ouyang competing as individuals.

A large but not very strong field with only five Top 25 teams:
#3 Texas Tech
#6 Stanford
#15 Pepperdine
#21 Baylor
#22 Colorado State

RE: Stanford MGolf Thread - winflop - 02-20-2023

Strong first round from the Cardinal. Thorbjornsen's card is littered with lots of colors - mostly red with 9 birdies
1. Pepperdine -8
2. Stanford -7
3 TCU -5

Good performances across the lineup
T2. Thorbjornsen -5
T15. Vilips & Ng -1
T27. Yang E
T58. Brown +3

Stanford is out on the dawn patrol tomorrow off #10 with the first tee time at 6:45am

Tough when your top player only pars 6 holes :)

RE: Stanford MGolf Thread - winflop - 02-21-2023

LOL GK3!

Another good day for the Cardinal. Still in second but now 4 shots behind Pepperdine, which is really nothing in college golf
1. Pepperdine -14
2. Stanford -10
T3. Baylor & Texas Tech -6

Not as many birdies today for Thorbjornsen but enough to take the lead. Solid play throughout the lineup
1. Thorbjornsen -7
T7. Vilips -4
T23. Ng E
T39. Yang +2

Play was suspended later in the day. Final round will be a shotgun start at 10:30am tomorrow

RE: Stanford MGolf Thread - winflop - 02-23-2023

Stanford was right there with Pepperdine until the final 4 holes, where Stanford went a combined +14 with 3 doubles and a triple. Nobody was immune from the collapse: Thorbjornsen (+5!!!!), Vilips (+2), Brown (+2), Ng (+3). Yang was E over the last 4 but was already +9 on the day and his score wasn't going to count. Thorbjornsen also had the individual lead going to 15.

The only silver lining is that this was in February and not April or March. Lots of time to right the ship before hosting Pac-12s and going to NCAAs

1. Pepperdine -8
2. Texas Tech -2
3. Stanford +5

T3. Thorbjornsen -4
T5. Vilips -2
T29. Brown +6
T42. Ng +8
T54. Yang +11

Next tournament is March 5-7 in Los Cabos, Mexico. I'm not sure this is going to be a fun couple of weeks. Coach Ray is likely pulling his hair out. Nothing frustrates him more than doubles and worse.

RE: Stanford MGolf Thread - Spiny_Norman - 02-23-2023

The Pepperdine coach said the last 27 holes were the toughest conditions he had ever seen in a college golf tournament.

This video was Tuesday afternoon when they suspended play. Had to be a little better yesterday but the wind clearly took a toll on the scores.

RE: Stanford MGolf Thread - Mick - 02-23-2023

I'm looking forward to the Far Western Intercollegiates at Pasatiempo. Warm-upon Sunday, April 9. Tournament is M - W, 4/10 - 4/12. They're looking for volunteers.

2023 field includes:

Arizona
BYU
California
Colorado State
Hawaii
Oregon
Pepperdine
San Diego State
San José State
Stanford
UC Irvine
UNLV
USC
Washington

RE: Stanford MGolf Thread - d4cohn - 03-22-2023

On the PGA Tour, alum Maverick McNealy's WGC Match Play Championship started off
about as poorly as possible. Maverick lost 6 holes in a row at one point, and ultimately
got crushed 8&6.

A good start to the year in the fall has given way to several W/D and some poor play
in the Spring.

Wish I were going to be around to volunteer for this. This will be the last time the event is played at Pasatiempo as it exists. The course is closing shortly after this tournament for a "retrovation" that will last until Dec 2024.

The WD was due to a shoulder injury. I'm worried that it's not fully healed and he's playing anyway.

RE: Stanford MGolf Thread - winflop - 03-28-2023

Men's golf hosts The Goodwin Thu-Sat at TPC Harding Park in San Francisco. Normally they would host at home, but they are hosting Pac-12s and conference rules don't allow teams to host events in spring season if they are hosting the conference championship (so that it's fair to all teams - except the host of course).

This is the largest men's college golf event of the year across D1, with 28 teams competing. They will be playing in two waves all three days, with scheduled times Thu-Fri and the top teams playing in the afternoon on Sat.

Will update with lineups and links once they are posted. I expect to see Thorbjornsen, Brown, Vilips, Ng, and Yang on the team with possibly others either playing as individuals or fielding a full B team if there's an opening.
