Team captains?
Not officially, though I wouldn't be surprised at all if they are when the time comes.
Last year we had different captains every game...

Texas is filled with grads of UT-Austin and quite a few Texas Aggies. SMU, U. of Houston, Rice, Texas Tech not so much. College Station only has a population of 125,000 even now; Austin MSA 2.5M, DFW MSA 8.1M, Houston MSA 7.5M, San Antonio MSA 2.7M (SF MSA 4.6M)
In my family, before any one went to any of the SWC schools, Texas was by far the biggest name athletic school, presumably because of news coverage in Houston in the early 60s.
Things may have changed in the last 50 years, but I think not.
At 52,000 students (Fall 2023), UT-Austin is still filling the state of Texas. Texas A&M indicates they have 73,000 students.
At 12,000 students, SMU likely falls behind both UT-Austin AND Tx A&M in alumni in the DFW area (and Houston, and San Antonio, and Austin)
I agree with much of what you say. SMU is not going to replace Texas statewide. If Texas , or Texas A&M for that matter, were an option for the ACC they would have taken them. But they are not. SMU is a very good footprint , especially in the MetroPlex. With the imprimatur of a Big 5 Conference, SMU can get back to its glory days. Dickerson & James at SMU were as big as Texas . TV was not the same then as now, but big time SMU teams will be premier college draw in North Texas.
I never went there nor did anyone in my family but the football fanaticism of its fans matches everyone not in Baton Rouge or .south Bend. The ACC will benefit greatly from the SMU membership.

Hard to separate conference realignment, NIL, liberalized transfer rules, and the soon to be full discarding of the idea of a "student athlete" for "employee athlete" but all of them are a reflection of the same thing... collegiate athletics has become all about the money (for the athletes, the schools, the coaches, and the television networks) , and not at all about the college. If I wanted to watch minor league professional sports, I would have started going to San Jose Giants games.
Last year was a major step back in my interest in collegiate athletics in general and Stanford in specific, and the move to the ACC just cements my apathy. I'll go to an occasional volleyball match or two, and being who I am, I'm sure I will get caught up in some sports' storybook season, but I would no longer describe myself as a fan in the traditional sense.
It's a little sad, but it's also ok.

Good post, BC. I feel similar...at least until Stanford generates a turnaround in football or men's basketball...or for me, men's volleyball. Then I'll likely return. But my enthusiasm isn't what it once was.
What I liked about college sports is that I used to know and see the athletes. I played against John Paye and Ron Rivera in high school. I took classes with some of the athletes, I played against the future GC of Apple. That personal element is diminished, it seems.
Just an odd thought...I imagine the bulk of Notre Dame fans have no issue with the transition, given that the majority of them didn't attend ND anyway.

I didn't see the P12 network on my Xfinity lineup any more (rip). The move to the ACC will affect my viewing of Stanford teams as I could rely on the P12-Bay Area channel to watch many Stanford events live.
Who knows how the ACC channel works and what will be available to us Stanford fans? Do they have regional channels? Doubt they have a West Coast version.

I'm signed up on Sling Orange Plan + Sports Extra option.
Gets 3 ACC channels: ACCN, ACCNX, and ACCDN (digital network).
The ACCNX will have the Stanford football kickoff press conference on July 23.
Sling Orange is $40/mo to me but $20/mo for new signups for a limited time.
Sports Extra option is $11/mo.
Not sure this is best way to go but it is a way to go.
BTW on their channels, the PAC-12 is listed as "no longer available".
PAC-12 Insider channel is still running some replays but for how long I dunno.

I kind of agree with you BC, but my apathy began before last year. With neither our football or men's basketball being worth watching, I quit going to the games and watched on TV if the game was a least somewhat interesting. The cost of the entertainment did not match up with the quality. A trip from a small airport to SFO and back, plus at least one night in a hotel meant spending somewhere between $800 and $1000, driving meant 1,000 miles of driving. At my age that is not so much fun as it used to be. Trips to any of our away games meant about the same cost.
I may actually consider making a trip to the right coast for a game just to have a chance to see the areas I have never been to. Surprisingly I can fly to Syracuse and back for roughly the same cost of flying to SFO during reasonable hours of the day.
I continue to hope that Taylor can at least field a well coached team, that plays hard and is fun to watch. David Shaw's last few teams failed to meet those parameters. So I have at least some slightly renewed interest since the whole thing is going to very different competition wise. Unfortunately NIL and the Portal makes it hard for me to really get excited, just like you described. If we can't win consistently and at least go bowling somewhere in football and at least make the NCAA's in basketball, we will have a very hard time holding on to our best players. Winning and the degree, and at least some reasonable NIL money will help us keep guys we will other wise lose. We shall see how it all works out.
I think the biggest need we have is to start winning again in both sports.

Unlike the Pac-12 Network, DIRECTV has it!

First, I'll have what Mick's having. I like his prediction for finish.
Second, it will hit me when it hits me, but something tells me I only have room to really root for one ACC team. When my teams were in different conferences, the chances of meeting were so remote (twice ever), that I really had two teams. Navy popped in as an easy third and that doesn't change, but it feels like Stanford will be truly secondary. Or I guess as long as they don't mess up Tech's chances for success. That seems a ways off. Again, we'll see how it goes. The Marine is retiring and headed to Darden at UVA, but I can't see myself caring about the French much one way or the other. Sure, in a bowl or Final Four. He has his CMac jersey ready to go next year when Stanford visits C'Ville.
As to the ACC Network, I get it in San Carlos and never asked. Xfinity is pretty random that way.
Who knows, the ACC might be functionally dead fairly quickly.

It appears we have the ACC Network in San Jose on Xfinity (Channels 431, 826, and 1325). I turned it on, and was treated to a Virginia vs. Va. Tech replay, baseball from May 13.

I think 826 and 1325 are the same channel. Xfinity has this weird system of repeating a lot of channels starting at 1000.

826 is the HD version.
ACCN and ACCNX are streamers accessible through the ESPN app using pay provider credentials that provides the ACC Network
ACCDN is a free YouTube channel.

To clarify, 826 and 1325 are both the HD version of ACCN. 431 is the SD version of ACCN. Right now if I try to select 431, my cable box automatically switches to 826 because it knows my TV is HD capable.
(However, I thought I saw 431 listed with different programming than 826/1325 in the Xfinity TV remote app when I looked there yesterday. Not sure if the app was wrong or what was going on then.)
