If you ever want to see the effect the refs can have on a game, calling 5 fouls on Brink that fast, all of them debatable calls.  Obviously that's not all of it, but it has had a major effect on this game.

After all these years you would think she would have learned to stay out of foul trouble,

Jump should start popping those deep 3s.

Weaknesses are more obvious when playing another top team.

The offensive fouls on Iriafen changed the momentum of the game.  All 5 of Brinks fouls came in the second half.  I'm not debating whether they were good or bad calls.  But they are what determined the course of the game.

I said at halftime that James would get hot at some point.  But did she have to get that hot?

Lepolo needs to score otherwise it’s 4 on 5.

Turnover ratio is a killer

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. North Carolina State Friday 4:30 - 81alum - 03-29-2024

Our three point shooting also fell apart as our players lost confidence.  4-22.  In the second half worse than that.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. North Carolina State Friday 4:30 - Hieronymus - 03-29-2024

It’s certainly not all on the refs but they have mattered a lot. But yeah 4-22 for three with several air balls doesn’t get it done. Forcing 6 turnovers isn’t good enough. And +8 on the boards isn’t enough of an edge for us.

Oh and I forgot giving up another brobdingnagian game to an opposing guard seals the deal.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. North Carolina State Friday 4:30 - JohnR34231 - 03-29-2024

We can't blame the refs every time things don't go well for us.
I didn't have a good feeling about this game.
Very pleasantly surprised when we were up by 10 at half but it sure didn't last.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. North Carolina State Friday 4:30 - BosCard - 03-29-2024

Why can’t we ever recruit a point guard who can score off the dribble.   It’s always been a weakness in the tournament and we’ve never been able to fill that gap.  We may have to wait 2 years for Swain to come.

A really great season for this team.  Sweet 16 was over achieving.

A lot of the second half will depend on foul trouble.  Can Iriafen stay free of her third?  Will Baldwin or Collins pick up an early third foul?  You get the feeling that if Iriafen doesn't have to worry about fouls she will score another 20--but that is a big IF.
This was my half time post.

Everything from this point forward went NCS's way.

Iriafen got that foul within 15 seconds.  Cam got 5 fouls in the next 12 minutes.  Neither Baldwin or Collins fouled out.  James outscored Stanford in the second half.  Our three point shooting went stone cold.  We had a gargantuan rebounding advantage in the first half and lost it in the second.  It was a fairly comprehensive meltdown.

And that is the last analysis of this game from me.  Season is over.  Time to start speculating about next year.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. North Carolina State Friday 4:30 - chrisk - 03-29-2024

NC State came out more aggressive in the 2nd half. They wanted it more.

We need better guard play next year.  Otherwise we will waste the brilliance of Iriafen with a 22-12 season.

Where is that better guard play going to come from? I had high hopes for Harriel at one point but she seems to have regressed as both a shooter and a ball handler. Bosgana not consistent enough. Ogden and Clardy still have a long way to go and I wonder how much they can improve. Lepolo seems to have lost all confidence in her shot.

Very good observation & question:

(1) Yes, in todays modern game, having 'guards & wings who can break their opponent down off the dribble to Score or Dish ....is ESSENTIAL ! "

(2) Sometimes you can't recruit these types of players that 'have 1 on 1 skills & can beat their opponent off the dribble to score or dish' ...because of :

[A] The Style of Offense your team/school plays [which maybe doesn't focus on that '1 on 1 style of play' or doesn't reward players for that style of play]
[B] Your school doesn't seem to value/reward that style of play during the season (recruits watch which style of play is rewarded with playing time for which types of players)

[C] Your schools coach is not 'perceived as being a supporter of that style of 'break people down off the dribble play'

Coach Staley (Sourh Carolina) & Coach Mulkey (LSU) are definitely perceived by recruits & players as supporting this style of play & designing Offenses & plays for these types of players

**********************

(3) This is worrisome both for the Women and Mens BBall teams, especially since we are headed into the ACC, which is a Conference, chock-full of Coaches & Players & FanBases that 'emphasize & support players that "can 1 on 1 take their opponent off the dribble to score or dish!'

(4) It might be time to 'rethink a few things' about our 'Style of Play in both Women & Mens Basketball'.

(5) And also, teams that 'Emphasize this style of 'take your opponent off the dribble to Score or Dish' practice all sorts of drills to develop these skills in 'All of their players, so their players are not 1 dimensional'

Drills like:

-1 on 1 to score off the dribble
-2 on 2 [drive & interior dish pass to a Big]
-3 dribbles 1 way, Hard ankle breaking crossover & rip thru back the other way ..then explode downhill to the basket to get your Defender 'On Your back'
etc

We have players on our team who are athletic eg

Jzaniya Harriel
Bosgana
Courtney Ogden
Nunu Agarra

...who if practice time was spent working to perfect their 1 on 1 'beat your opponent off the dribble to Score or Dish' skills ....would be deadly !

(6) What might also help recruiting some of these types of players is Modifying our Freshman Admissions & Transfer Admissions to be exactly in line with Duke & UCLA & Texas & NotreDame & Cal (which have high academic standards, but not ridiculously unrealistic & detrimental to the Mission of being Top20 in Mens Basketball all and Winning NCAA championships annually in Women's basketball, which is what I surmise the Fans of this Board would like for Mens & Womens StanU Bball, & which will also allow us to have a Strong Negotiating position the next time the " Power Conference ReAlignment musical chairs & Are Your schools 'Marquee Sports attractive to Big TV/Media platforms Assessments/Decisions " ...begin again !

****************

And Yes, in the case of our Women's Bball Team, I know Tara (Coach VanDerveer) is a Hall of Fame Coach & The Winningest Coach in Basketball, so this is not meant to be disparaging; Its just that in todays game You have to be able to 'Play in Multiple different styles', meaning:

+Slow, methodical
+Fast UpTempo
+Structured Offense
+UnStructured 'Create Your own shots' 1 on 1 Offense
+Take people off the dribble to Score or Draw a 2nd-defender, before 'dishing to a teammate'

We’ve had so many elite post players but we haven’t had a guard who could score off the dribble since Candice Wiggins.   We certainly try and recruit those kind of players.  We recruited Watkins, Hidalgo, Clark, Bueckers and Ionescu and Plum before them but they never seem to choose us in the end.  I wonder if they feel our offense is too structured.  And yes I am not optimistic things will change much next year.
