Thanks, WiM -- I much prefer your article, and the quotes there seem legitimate. I'll uncross those fingers and toes just as soon as I regain consciousness from the OreSt basketball game that just ended...
I suppose I should have been skeptical of the ESPN article from this passage:
" 'I get the chance to play with the greatest student-athletes in the world,' Sanders said, wearing a Cardinal red-and-white cap."
I was watching the broadcast when he made that statement...and the cap he was wearing when he did was most decidely black, NOT red-and-white. If the ESPN guy can't even get that part right, no reason to believe the rest of it.

Nice!
I wouldn't believe that ESPN just completely fabricated a quote, so maybe they just used an old quote from a few weeks ago? And like 76lsjumb said, the quotes in this article seem legitimate enough.
I'm so excited to see Barry on the Farm next year!

I saw the article before it was posted here, and thought that quote about not being admitted was strange. Why wouldn't he know yet if he'd been admitted? What else could the admissions board have been waiting for to make their decision. You know his app was sitting at the top of the pile to get reviewed. And then, if you really didn't know, why would you make a grand announcement in a public situation that you were going, if you didn't know you were going to be admitted. It all seemed odd. The newsok article makes a lot more sense.
As for the disclosures, when I saw Kyle B's twitter post yesterday about Odenigbo, I was disturbed that this leak was apparently from Stanford. I think it's completely inappropriate for people in the administration or athletic department to be saying anything publicly about a kid's status. Aside from being unethical on its own, I think it will backfire on us eventually. Recruiting is a dance. The kids know they need to flirt with a few girls before they choose who to take home with them for the night (or hopefully a four year sleepover), but if you think that one of the girls flirting with you may cause you public humiliation, you might not be willing to going through the first steps of the flirtation. No one wants to have it publicly known they were rejected, even if it's widely acknowledged that the school rejecting you had ridiculous standards, when compared to other FBS programs.
