Don't know about you guys, but I'm looking forward to seeing both Ricky Seale and Kelsey Young get some playing time.

Re: 2012 pre-season thread - StannyBoy - 08-14-2012

I'm looking forward to KY but I wouldn't expect too much since he's learning a new position. And I'm more excited to see Remound Wright play than Seale. Better NFL body and had an amazing highlight tape in HS.

Wilner ranks the top potential newcomers to the team, mixing SJSU, 59ers and Cardinal together: http://goo.gl/Lq5pd

The Stanford players ranked are:
9. Kodi Whitfield
6. Ed Reynolds
2. Brendon Austin.

As usual, it's a goofy Wilner ranking, as he ranks several specialists above Reynolds and Whitfield. But if you expect both to be starters, then they're more important and more likely to make an impact than a specialist.

Re: 2012 pre-season thread - washingtonismoney - 08-14-2012

Todd Husak tweeted a couple of thoughts from Stanford practice:
"Stanford has loads of NFL talent on the roster. Awesome to watch practice yesterday and see how bright the future is going to be."

"Vaughters, Toilolo, Ertz, Wayne Lyons, Alex Carter, Ben Gardner, Cameron Fleming, Montgomery, and Kodi Whitfield were standouts in practice."

Interesting that Husak named both Whitfield/Montgomery and Lyons/Carter as standouts, as you'd imagine they were directly competing against each other at least some of the time.

Wilner and the Daily write a post-practice article: http://www.mercurynews.com/rss/ci_21313482?source=rss&utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter

http://www.stanforddaily.com/2012/08/14/football-camp-update-secondary-shaping-up-sanders-fights-for-a-spot-in-backfield-on-special-teams/

The Daily's is better written.

Re: 2012 pre-season thread - StannyBoy - 08-14-2012

The Daily calls Wright and Seale journeymen?! LOL the person who wrote that clearly doesn't know what that means.

Yeah, wasn't the writer's best moment. Still, much better detail.

I'm not sure if Kelsey Young is really learning a new position. I think the idea that Shaw and Hamilton have is that they just need to get him the ball in space and let him make some noise. After spring practice was done I had a chance to ask Shaw directly about Young and this was his response: "We have a depth chart on a board in my office. The receivers are listed here, and the running backs are listed here. Right in the middle, all by himself, we've got Kelsey."

As for Remound Wright, I hope we hear from him this year. Of all the recruits in that '11 class, I'm not sure anyone was more excited to be a Cardinal than Wright.

Call me immature - but Kelsey Young was not the first thing I thought of when I read this snippet.

Something's wrong with the software. The above comment deserves at least four or five +1s, but it's only letting me click the up arrow once.

Re: 2012 pre-season thread - washingtonismoney - 08-16-2012

The Daily has a nice pair of articles. One on the quarterback competition, if you can stand to read another article about it: http://www.stanforddaily.com/2012/08/16/football-preview-nottingham-nunes-frontrunners-in-tightly-contested-quarterback-competition/

And one on Ryan Hewitt, whom they dub "Mr. Versatility": http://www.stanforddaily.com/2012/08/16/football-preview-hewitts-workload-only-increasing-at-fullback-as-mr-versatile/

Re: 2012 pre-season thread - Hank 91 - 08-16-2012

Here's a quick note from Drukarve from behind the pay curtain. He talks James Vaughters -- perhaps the single player I'm most excited to watch this fall -- and Remound Wright, whom we've been discussing a bit on this thread.

Quote: "Vaughters has been better than we had hoped, and we had high hopes for him," Shaw said. "He's been borderline dominant the last four days of practice. Just so physical, so fast, and now he completely understands the defense so he's anticipating and really hitting the holes on blitzes and playing off blocks in the running game. He's been very good."

-Shaw said that no decision has been made on Barry Sanders' redshirt, but that it's unlikely the true freshman would play this season if he wouldn't make a major contribution to the team.

"I haven't figured out how (we will use him), I haven't figured out if (we will use him)," Shaw said. "That's what this next week is about. To say we're loaded at running back is an understatement because Remound Wright has had a phenomenal camp. He really has. Ricky Seale has had a really good camp. So to have four backs that can all go, we want to see where Barry fits on special teams, we want to see where Barry fits in the offense to see if we want to put him out there because there's no doubt he can play.

"(But) if it's just returning kicks and not anyplace else, that might not be enough to burn a redshirt."

Re: 2012 pre-season thread - washingtonismoney - 08-16-2012

Many updates from David Lombardi, but newsiest is probably Shaw's continued infatuation with Kodi Whitfield. It would seem he's destined for an important role early and I wouldn't be shocked if he takes Drew Terrell's spot by the middle or end of the year.

Pretty detailed radio interview by David Shaw. Skip to about 10 minutes in or so: http://www.yahoosportsradio.com/media/podcast/Brando_20120816_10_03.mp3

Free blog from Drukarev on Shaw post-practice media availability: http://stanford.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1397739

Some interesting stuff there. Would guess no true freshmen d-linemen, which is a bit of a bummer. Shaw compares Whitfield to Ryan Whalen, which makes a lot of sense to me.

Drukarev interviews Henry Anderson, who looks like the frontrunner to replace Matt Masifilo: http://stanford.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1398102

Previewing the tight ends. Haven't heard much on Dudchock.

Re: 2012 pre-season thread - Hank 91 - 08-18-2012

Pep Hamilton talks to Drukarev about the offense in a free article on CardinalReport.com. He talks wide receivers, tight ends, and offensive line (especially the freshmen). Good stuff.

Fowkes thinks true freshman starting LT is likely. I don't know about that. Seems way too risky.
