Re: DAWKINS WATCH - yvonne - 04-03-2013

Isn't player development primarily from assistant coaches anyway? We need to look at someone who has had experience with managing a team. Madsen may eventually be a good head coach, but next year's not the time. The previous two successful head coaches were head coaches at smaller programs.

Oh, note this part, too:

Quote:Kevin Bannon left in disgrace in 2001 after forcing his players to shoot naked free throws as part of a practice contest.

Come to think of it, it's entirely possible that Jarrett Mann was shooting naked free throws during GAMES.  Toward the end of his career, whenever he shot free throws, everyone in the entire pavilion averted their eyes, as it was so painful to watch.  I doubt you could find anyone who would be able to tell you what he was wearing...

Big difference between AC and HC, and Maddog only has one year as an AC.  Keep him there - he's done an amazing job with Heustis & Powell.  But find a guy who actually knows Xs & Os to be the HC, because it's plainly obvious from the number of complete end-game meltdowns that Dawkins hasn't a clue in this respect.

I will be speaking again with Muir before I decide whether to renew my tickets.  I am leaning very strongly toward not renewing.

Re: DAWKINS WATCH - yvonne - 04-03-2013

One of th questions Muir asked me was how many game I had seen. Unlike StanFan88, I had watched only three games this year. He said hat if I hadn't seen many games, I wouldn't se how close we were. Perhaps that's true. The games I saw did not make me want to return. And that's what I'm not sure Muir understands. If the product on the floor is not entertaining, people will take their entertainment dollars elsewhere.

Kenny Smith, who knows a thing or two about basketball once said that if a team gets blown out. That's on the players.  That's effort.  If a team loses by a few that's on the coach.

He asked me the same. I'd seen a fair few so it didn't work for me.

I don't think this makes sense. A college coach is responsible for a) graduating players and b) W-L. a) is irrelevant here; b), on the other hand, is. Teams that get blown out are bad teams; margin of victory is the best predictor of future results. So if a team is getting blown out, it's on the coach.

Generally close games (roughly) even out over a long enough time sample. (For example, the 72-10 Bulls went... .500 in close games) Oddly, Dawkins has had a long record of struggles in close games. It's been five years now, and his teams have consistently struggled. Dawkins is a one-man rebuke to the best thinkers in advanced basketball statistics.

He asked me a similar question.  My answer was "I've seen enough games this year and over the previous four years to know that Coach Dawkins is not capable of bringing Stanford basketball back to where it needs to be."  I had already told him that I had either given away my tickets to the rest of the home games or donated them back to Stanford.  "Even if it's a sunk cost, it's no longer worth my time to go watch this team play."

Now I'm pondering whether to sink another $2K for next year.

Re: DAWKINS WATCH - pincemob - 04-03-2013

Regardless of what you think of Madsen, coaching experience does not seem to be as important in basketball as other sports.  Some of the all-time winningest NBA coaches had no experience before they starting coaching.  Lenny Wilkins, Don Nelson, Pat Riley, Doc Rivers had no experience.  Mark Jackson had none before getting the Warriors job and he has been a success.  Neither did Hoiberg when he got the ISU job.  You do need the right combo of personality, motivational skills, player relationships, credibility, etc.  I am not saying experience is not a plus, simply that a candidate with the right personality & character factors could be successful quickly regardless of experience level.  A successful mid-major coach like Gregg Marshall would be a good choice also, I think, provided they could adapt to our unique recruiting model.  My point is that if Muir is indeed thinking of the Madsen route, he will have plenty of good examples of coaches who succeeded with little/ no experience.
