No sugarcoating this was a Terrible loss. We needed to runt he ball MUCH MUCH MUCH more than we did and it bit us in the ass throughout the game including the last drive

This loss is pretty ignominious, in my opinion, but we'll have to live with that.
The results were clear. Utah was the better team today. Congrats to the Utes.
Where does this team go from here? This is the worst loss of the Shaw era, so we'll have to see. I wouldn't rule out anything.

You know, the real culprit for this loss is Larry Scott.
I never liked the Pac-12 expansion, in fact, I would've preferred if we had booted the Arizona schools to go back to the Pac-8. This never would've happened in the Pac-8.

We looked like a champion team rising to the adversity and the hole that we dug. The final two play calls are just baffling starting with a 3rd and 2.

That was a breathtakingly bad call on 3rd down. For once, we have established the power run this season; we have the Utah D on its heels; but instead we choose to throw to our converted TE who hasn't caught a ball all season?
I mean we have two downs to get two yards. The run options are several. A power run, a zone read, a bootleg - almost anything would've better.
Anyway, we didn't deserve to win that game.

The UW loss last year was just as bad as this one

With UW loss, we could at least point to one phase of the game -- the defense -- that was generally really good. Not sure what unit (special teams?) covered itself in glory here.

It is completely mind-numbingly confounding... Shaw insists on going with 8 OL and running the ball against UW and ASU in the 4th quarter with leads, saying "if we need 2 yards we are going to run to get it."
Then, with the game on the line, on the most important 3rd and 2 of the season, you throw two passes? I thought the identity of the team was to run the football? Don't get me wrong, if the passes were good for TDs, it would be great, but why not run it now if all you would do is run it against Washington in the 4th quarter with a lead?

Eh, I think the Washington loss was worse. At least during this game there were times when we looked like a competent team. Plus SLC is a harder environment than Seattle because of the altitude, noise seems like a wash. Oh, and Utah is actually a good team when they don't make mistakes, which they didn't tonight. They should've creamed UCLA last weekend, 6 INTs and UCLA only won by one score? That's actually a terrible showing.

I though the UW loss mainly came down to an awful passing day by Nunes.
More problems for more people in today's game.
But the Utes played well. Can we dream of a rematch?
Re: Utah game thread -
dabigv13 - 10-12-2013
3rd and 2 with the defense playing up on the line could be a good time to throw the ball....I would've run it there still because we had two downs, but it's defensible.
The problem was that Utah was not playing up on the line. They had plenty of LBs standing up, and as was evident from the play, expecting to be in coverage and covering well.

I thought Hogan should have thrown to Hewitt on that play. He seemed like he could have gotten the 1st down.

Apparently, the woofing gods favored that jackass MuscleUte over the good guys.
Re: Utah game thread -

This loss was not as bad as Washington....we had absolutely NO offense against them last year.
This just feels bad because we were inept for the 2nd and 3rd qtr again. We looked great until we decided not to obtain a 1st down near the goal line with it was 3rd and 2.
This is college football and as WiM posted earlier this week, the chances of losing a couple of games was reasonably high. At least we aren't Oklahoma today.

Hogan lost this game in the second and third quarters. Shaw failed to salvage the game when victory was within reach. You can lalso call that losing the game.

Positives:
- Holding Utah to 6 points off 2 turnovers in the 2nd half
- Boys drove into scoring position on the last drive, never gave up
Still love this team.
Rose Bowl, baby!

I thought so at first, but it looked like the Utah defender had it read pretty well. It wouldn't have been just an easy flip, so Hogan looked elsewhere.
Re: Utah game thread - Cardinal96 - 10-12-2013
I was really dejected at the end of the game. I was shocked we didn't run it on 3rd and 2 like many others were. But you know what. This is the law of averages rearing its ugly head. We are not Oregon. We don't blow other teams out. We (typically) win close games. And when you play a lot of close games, you are bound to lose some.
With our ball-control offense, we have fewer possessions per game than many other teams. And we don't have the defense we had last year to really make that work. We are still a good team. But I think 9-3 is a realistic goal at this point. I don't think we will beat Oregon and I think we will lose at least another game.

Shaw's explanation for the two throws at the end was that we were out of time outs.
