N.D.'s Troy Niklas (and, sadly, just-missed Stanford recruit) declares for NFL draft: https://twitter.com/BrianHamiltonSI/status/421480994147799040

Looking like another fun offseason of N.D. desperately searching of banana peels to slip on, feet to shoot, etc.: (see also starting WR DeVaris Daniels missing spring practice because of academic ineligibility -- https://twitter.com/BrianHamiltonSI/status/421398808312827904)

With the amount of ND players who are so eager to transfer or jump to the NFL in the last couple of years, one has to wonder if this knowledge is being used in our recruiting battles with them.

Serious question: What legitimate reasons can Notre Dame use to claim it is a better option than Stanford for football players?

I can see two:

1. Winning tradition
2. Everything that goes along with being more popular - bigger fan base, stadium, more media coverage

But honestly, what else is there after that?  And more honestly, how are those two factors all that meaningful at a time when Stanford has the second most wins in CFB over the last four years?

It probably also appeals to egomaniacs. ND football players are gods who can (nearly) do no wrong on campus, that's not true for Stanford. The anonymity of Stanford student life may appeal to Andrew Luck or Barry Sanders, but it won't to everyone.

Some of these kids are also probably catholic.

A first round pick makes 2x to 2.5x what a third round pick makes on average, and if he's in the Top 10, much, much more.  Good decision for Mannion.

BTW, I've always wondered...his dad accepted a high school head coaching position in Oregon (moving north from Pleasanton).  Quite a coincidence.

Perhaps part of #2, but I think they will get a lot more "benefit of the doubt" than would Stanford. A 1-loss Notre Dame will likely be in the playoff. A 1-loss Stanford may need to justify itself more.

OK, back on topic...

Another Cal early departure.  This time it's DT Viliami "Tiny" Moala.  No word on Bigelow yet, but Moala seems like a surprise departure to me.

The 2014 Cal season is shaping up to be a lot like the 2013 one, IMO.

Maybe that's a surprise, but I'm not sure it's a bad thing. Moala got a lot of attention from Cal fans because of his size, but you really want a DL to have mobility, even if he's a run stopper. Moala was so big that he didn't move well.

Re: Early entries into the NFL draft - 71Bear - 01-10-2014

Decent run stopper; poor pass rusher.  He is built for the 3-4 and UC ran the 4-3 (a stupid mistake that hopefully will be rectified by the new DC).

There will be more.....

Has anyone mentioned how garish their site is.  If I had to visit that site as often as I do this one, I would get an eye-strain induced headache.  Kudos to whoever's responsible for the look and feel of this site.  Nice and clean.  Will just have to add this to long list of reasons I'm so glad I got off that waiting list.
