Any pinch hit substitution, bringing in a lefty to face a lefty for one at-bat... or even a late-game defensive replacement...are those silly as well? They all rely on statistics that say you improve the chances of a positive outcome, no?
I guess  I could argue either way but just pointing out that it's not the only time managers make those kinds of calls and this one doesn't seem any sillier than the others.

Is that based upon professional, major league statistics or based upon college statistics?  Given that the reaction time is presumably less, the fielding is a little less clean, the catching is a little less clean at the NCAA level, are the statistics for bunting the same?

But of course all those factors apply to hitting as well. In fact, given the metal bats in college baseball, hitters might have an even greater relative advantage than the pros.

That game reminded me of the Giants playing torture baseball.  It's too bad Quantrill couldn't have retired one more batter in the 8th.  The blown call on the DP came pretty close to being too much for Stnford to overcome.

Vanderbilt has to be considered the favorite tomorrow, but is it realistic to think Stanford has the pitching depth to win?

Re: Baseball Super Regional - DC - 06-07-2014

Thanks goodness we will have a new relief pitcher tomorrow.

Giants were behind by a run tonight going in to the ninth inning.  Pagan struck out, but reached first when the ball got away from the catcher.  Pence doubled him in.  Posey flied out TO LEFT, advancing Pence to third from second.  Very rare.  Then, they walk Sandoval, to set up a potential double play.  Then Morse has his first walk off hit, a single that reaches the right/center corner.

All they do is win...  41-21, best record in baseball...

Re: Baseball Super Regional - Leftcoast - 06-07-2014

I've watched the Giants since the 70s and this is the hottest stretch I can remember.

Can someone explain to me how Stanford fans can improve the baseball team's chances of winning by not watching them on TV?

What?  You don't believe in curses?

Re: Baseball Super Regional - DC - 06-08-2014

How can we win if we only have one pitcher?

We can't. Our only consistent pitcher played 7 innings yesterday and the relief almost lost it for us.

5-0 at the top of the 1st with 2 outs.

With all due respect, I believe this is going to be our finest hour (or two, maybe three).

Those are the same people that use the term "Frisco."  They aren't from our fair state!  And if they say "the 101" or "the 280" they are likely from SoCal and not NorCal.  I guess with that much traffic in LA, I might put an emphasis on the freeways as well.  "The 405 is the world's longest parking lot!"

So right, drives me crazy, especially "cali" (which, for some reason, David Lombardi seems to use an awful lot :(

Agree, Cali grates on the ears.

I hope oman is right, too. Stanford cuts the lead 5-4 in the top of the fourth.

Re: Baseball Super Regional - fullmetal - 06-08-2014

Vandy gets one more, 6-4 at the bottom of the 4th, but Stanford has two men on base with no outs so far...

Let's clarify.  A wild pitch and failed pickoff attempt have Stanford runners at 2nd and 3rd base with no outs.  Living dangerously :)

12-5 Vandy in the 8th
