I think the more apt comparison, given the levels of sanctimony, academic rigor, and relative position of football in the eyes of the school and local law enforcement, is Penn State.

I don't pay to watch them take a test in the Chemistry class. I don't pay to cheer them on while they study. I pay to watch them play on saturday. And when they play, I hope they win. Do I like it when theres hoaxes and student video guys dying and academic investigations? No. It sucks. But that stuff happens. I'd love for every kid to get a 4.0 and then have the team win the National Championship, but that will never happen. My point is, you can argue until you're blue in the face about academic standards and which kids could get in here or there.
Let it be known, I like David Shaw..dude is a great coach and runs a great program. Saying that, if BK were to leave or get fired, I'd love for ND to pursue Shaw. But, ND is the better team right now. Stanford should be (yes, that was a brutal call against SC) undefeated. But ND is still better across the board. Better QB, better receivers (say hello to Will Fuller, who is better than Nelson Agholor) and has the defense to win these types of games. And if it comes down to special teams, Kyle Brindza will kick in the NFL. ND 27 Stanford 20
Question for you. If the University of Dead Fake Girlfriends is the better team, why is Stanford favored by ~ 2 points at the University of Dead Fake Girlfriends> Discounting the home field advantage, that suggests Vegas oddsmakers see Stanford as a ~ 5.5 point favorite on a neutral field. These are people who put their money where their mouth is.

Technically the oddsmakers see N.D. as a 1 point favorite but bettors see Stanford as a 2 point favorite. Slight distinction (which I don't makes a brobdingnagian practical difference.)
(09-30-2014, 11:38 AM)NDIrish link Wrote:Because vegas is trying to make money.....
And here's the reason why the distinction doesn't make much practical difference! Vegas doesn't make money if its lines are systematically incorrect.
(To anticipate the inevitable counterargument. Someone will claim that what *really* matters is Vegas's balancing the volume of bets 50-50 on each side. True. But if the balance happens to be systematically incorrect it would be easy to make a living as a sports bettor, which just doesn't happen terribly frequently. Put it this way, inevitable counterarguer: if you really believed this argument, why aren't *you* a sports bettor as a profession?)

I know this is completely the wrong place to interject with football, but nonetheless I will note that while this is the common wisdom I think it is absolutely wrong.
Right now Hogan is not the weak link on the offense. I would put that #1 on the Oline and possibly #2 on the running back group.
The only reason Hogan even gets into the conversation on being the critical link to future success is that qb is the most important position on the field, so by default everybody's qb is a key to their future.
As an aside, the running backs are actually running the ball fairly well with a good average per carry, but are messing up on other aspects of the job. People like to complain about things like pass protection or blocking being a criterion for running backs to play - but then we lose multiple touchdowns on chop-block calls and find our sack rates going way up.

Academically speaking, looks as though the two schools are roughly comparable in the caliber of student they accept, but it looks like more have Stanford as their #1 choice.

Re: the game. I think it comes down to one thing - Kevin Hogan's performance. The team's success (or lack of success) this season will depend on him. The defense is going to be stout and should be able to keep Stanford in the game even against a talented offense. Can Stanford's offense score enough points to win? The running game is not capable of carrying the team as it has done in the past. That puts the burden on the QB. I was pleased to see the OL provide Hogan with good protection vs. UW. UW had the top 2 players in the country in sacks and the OL mostly kept them at bay. Hogan had time and good sight lines. But his decisionmaking was very questionable. He was late in delivering the ball at times. He threw to receivers who were well covered and missed others who were wide open. He locked onto receivers. He is elusive and did a great job extending plays and getting yards with his legs. He has the experience, size and athletic ability to get the job done. The raw material is there. But he has got to make it happen throwing the ball. Personally, I am not confident right now. I hope to have more cause for optimism after Saturday.

Really? Shaw is the perfect fit for Stanford, an alum, a great coach and a fine ambassador for the school. the University of Dead Fake Girlfriends has been hit with nothing but scandal after scandal since Kelly arrived, he generally looks as if his head is going to explode on the sidelines and he seems much more like a liability to the school than an ambassador. Kids go to Stanford because of Shaw; kids go to the University of Dead Fake Girlfriends despite Kelly.
I agree with Simas: the University of Dead Fake Girlfriends has not seen a defense like Stanford. Golson better be every bit the QB you think he is, because he's going to be running for his life all afternoon. The only thing that will keep the University of Dead Fake Girlfriends in this game is Stanford's red zone woes.Â
I expect a low scoring game with Stanford coming out on top 20-13 in OT. Golson is turned back on 4th down at the goal line after he trips on a term paper someone was writing for one of the the University of Dead Fake Girlfriends players that was blown onto the field by the ghost of Teo's fake girlfriend in a valiant effort to aid the team of her former school.
OK, so i thought this would be a game where i could come to the opposing teams message board and have an actual discussion about the game and get into specifics, but apparently not.
To clarify, I have nothing but respect for stanford AND shaw. I think he is a great fit and a perfect fit for Stanford. But i was asking specifically about coaching techniques. I think kelly has done more with less, but Shaw has been able to maintain what he has, so that is great to.Â
I was trying to keep this discussion about the game, but you can keep bashing ND for their mistakes, cause i am sure Stanford has always been perfect? I guess their is no mutual respect between universities that have higher standards.Â
But to try and get it back on track, I agree ND has not seen a defense like stanfords yet, but i think they have enough weapons IF the O-line can make some adjustments and play better than they have, that ND can compete with stanfords D. 20-13 OT is a fair guess, very possible. But why do you feel the need to keep slamming golson for the fact that he cheated? I suppose you have never made a mistake, when you did, did you stand up and take ownership? Would you have waited a whole year to play and come back when you had other colleges calling? Yes he screwed up, but im proud for what he has done since then!
[/quote]
Why do you think I was slamming Golson for the fact that he cheated? I didn't specify the player for whom the paper was being written and sadly it could apparently have been for any number of players. I respect the fact that Golson stood up and took ownership; I'd respect him a lot more if he'd never put himself in that position in the first place.Â
I'll echo the sentiment already expressed by others: I'm not sure what you expected to find here. I think Notre Dame is a fine school, but it's no Stanford. I think Kelly is a decent football tactician, but I wouldn't want him coaching Stanford. I think Golson is athletically gifted, but I wouldn't want him as Stanford's QB. I think Notre Dame is consistently ranked higher than it should be based on an outdated reputation. And I think Stanford's defense is too deep, too talented and playing too well for Notre Dame to win, even though the game is in South Bend.Â
Remember this: two years ago, if the officials would have correctly ruled that Taylor scored in OT, and if Notre Dame hadn't used players that were ineligible due to academic improprieties, Stanford may have won that game and gone on to play in the BCS Championship game, where they'd have given Alabama much more of a run for their money than Notre Dame did. Stanford fans certainly have not forgotten. The team certainly has not forgotten. Payback will be sweet.Â

I think if we can get a couple of our suspended guys back (meaning they have been cleared) than i would say we could get one here, if they dont, its anybody's game.
Have these five players been practicing with the other players?
I don't think any coach would put players on the field who are not in game condition and aware of the game plan.

The NCAA will not even let players practice in pads until they have 3 days of non-pad training. I think you need to check your sources. If I am somehow wrong and Kelly puts them in the game, then it can only help Stanford. Have you noticed that football players tend to make a lot of mistakes the first couple of games?
