Re: WBB: 2016 Recruiting - Jskass - 06-04-2015

2 teams were chosen, one for WUGs and other for Pan Am games. Supposedly the latter is the A team- and includes Moriah Jefferson IIRC. Lili Thompson was the third Stanford player invited to the trials.

Re: WBB: 2016 Recruiting - BobK - 06-04-2015

Plus the 19U team.

Stanford is required to report some statistics about it's entering class through the common data set required by the Dept of Education. Otherwise they are quite mum on the matter.

GPA is a wholly unreliable measure of changes over time due to grade inflation.

SAT scores are somewhat more consistent but the test has gone through many changes over the years. How Stanford weighs this test is unclear, and probably changes over time. "Hard to get in" relates to minimum scores - the common data set requires 25th and 75th percentile scores with 25th presumably more relevant to this question.

The common data set starts from 1998, Stanford's numbers are below. They're fairly consistent with perhaps a slight uptick starting in 2012. I would expect Stanford to have gone up versus other elites given it's increasing status and prominence. I don't have the energy to do this for a broader range of elite schools, however.

The next level question would be whether resources to do well on the SAT have increased.

Ace Konig just committed to North Carolina State

I wonder what the story was there.  Ace's father is a coach, so they must know what they are doing.  She had 150 schools contact her.  Most of the schools she was interested in were Pac 12 schools.  So why NC State?  That sounds like a step down academically even from Washington and a step down in basketball from Duke, and a very oversized distance and climate away from British Columbia.  Nor were we the only elite academic school to court her--Yale recruited her--so she apparently had good academic credentials.

There must be a story there.  I wonder if her father had a coaching connection to NC State.

A couple of articles about Mikayla Pivec.  She is described as a 4.0 student, is a 5'10" point guard who led her team to its first ever state championship.  She originally thought she would be a middle infielder in college--she plays three sports--but now focuses on basketball.  Her mom was a track athlete for Idaho, her dad a soccer athlete for Washington.

She says she will probably play in the Pac 12 and has Stanford, Washington, Oregon State and Washington State on her list.  So it is very likely that we will either have her on our team or we will play against her regularly.

Made the Seattle Times' "Female Athlete of the Year" in the last article.  What I like about the descriptions is her competitiveness and grit.  She sounds something like Marta Sniezek.

Re: WBB: 2016 Recruiting - 81alum - 06-19-2015

Currently, I think these are the 2016 prospects discussed on this board and not so far ruled out, for three slots.  Based on our past track record this list may have little to do with who eventually comes.

Anna Wilson (committed)
Natalie Chou
Dijonai Carrington
Celeste West
Mikayla Pivec

Natalie Chou has grown, and is now sometimes listed as a 6'1" forward.  Olson calls her one of the elite guards in the class, partly because of her superior size.  Stanford continues to be listed as one of her schools--among a great many.  She was on the US U18 3x3 team this summer.  I still can't find out much about her academically, although she is interested in "Biology and Education."

West could be iffy

The pro am starts tomorrow.  The frosh are here but usually they can't get to Kezar without rides so miss the first week.  Maybe a FBC story after the games on Saturday

Re: WBB: 2016 Recruiting - Jskass - 06-20-2015

The only thing that helps me cope with the fog - I'll be there!

Re: WBB: 2016 Recruiting - BobK - 06-20-2015

Looking forward to your report.  I cant go until July 11.

meaning lack of interest on her part or ours? I presume ours might include admissions, and sounds like others such as Cal are hot on her. I also have noticed the excellent recruiting Oregon is doing and note they'll be far more competitive in the Pac-12 and possibly nationally within 1-2 years. Cal wants Ionescu badly as you know but can you imagine the ducks adding her to their already strong 2016 class which includes McGwire whom IIRC you really liked?

Re: WBB: 2016 Recruiting - BobK - 06-20-2015

Love McGuire.    I'm hoping for the best with West.  We need her and she has really upped  her game.

After her sophomore year McGuire was advertised as having a 3.15 GPA

McGuire has committed to Oregon, along with Sierra Campisano who was another player we were watching here.  Campisano seems to have been a good student--somewhere I saw a 3.7.  Graves has put together a pretty good looking 2016 class of five recruits.  Oregon will be moving up in the food chain.

Re: WBB: 2016 Recruiting - Jskass - 06-20-2015

At Pri Am first game, and neither Kaylee Johnson nor Beittany McPhee here. Assume that Lili (and hopefully Bri) will be here for their game, which is next, as coach of their team may be one of Lili's relatives - Deeic Thimpson.

In current game, Mikayla Cowling of Cal is showing her talent along with immature decision making (first of her two fouls was an obvious and unnecessary push right in front of the ref, then right after she came back in she started arguing a no-call). She will be very good once she gains maturity.

Re: WBB: 2016 Recruiting - Jskass - 06-20-2015

First game the Mikayla Cowling - Denesha Stallworth show not enough to beat the deep and well coached Mission Rec team. Next up includes Lili and Bri, who are both here. You cannot miss their team jerseys. BOLD!

Re: WBB: 2016 Recruiting - 81alum - 06-21-2015

Thanks for linking Marian's write-up.  It sounds like it is only for the most avid of basketball fans.  I wonder what, if anything, we can learn about our players by watching them play on a team that meets itself for the first time at game time.

Re: WBB: 2016 Recruiting - Jskass - 06-21-2015

write-up is accurate. lots of fast breaks and missed layups. positive is Lili and Bri look to be a strong combo, working together well. Both their families were sitting behind me and they were very entertained by the play, giving their daughters grief for missing the easy shots and credit for making the tougher ones -- some very pretty three pointers. My bad for confusing Jefflo and Cowling.

Taylor Rooks has transferred to Harvard.  Introduced to their campers yesterday.
