Fixed for recency :)

And for the old-timers, anyone for John Elway throwing to Vincent White, Emile Harry and Chris Dressel while being protected by Matt Moran, Chris Rose, Brent Martin and Jeff Deaton?

How many national championships did these trip down memory lane teams win?

I'm not talking about a Top 10-level team.  I'm talking Top 2-level and asserting that Stanford has never had so many elite players at these key positions all at the the same time before, in my memory.  They've had them at different times, and have had a few elite talents and other really good players, but not so many elite players all at the same time.  If Shaw pulls in even one elite WR recruit in 2018, he will have the offensive firepower to compete for a national championship, is what I am asserting.  A Hall or St. Brown would fit that bill, IMO.

Defense wins championships.  We will need to pair 2010-11 Luck-led or 2015 Hogan-led offense with a 2012-13 Stanford defense to win it all.  I'm optimistic that the stars will eventually align, but there always seems to a position talent gap due to the vagaries of the academic qualifications among recruits.

New 2018 offer.  Also two predictions on 247 yesterday for Stanford.  Has Alabama and other SEC offers.

Bama and tOSU get recruiting classes like this potential one every year.  Several other teams come close to this caliber, every year.  It takes special team chemistry, great coaching on both sides of the LOS, and a lot of lucky breaks to win a NC.

But, what a pinnacle of success would it be for Shaw to cap his run of 10+ win seasons, six straight bowl appearances, including three Rose Bowls, with a NC.  I'll dream on that.  ;D

GPA of 4.0 per: http://www.athletesmeetingexcellence.com/services/ (scroll down to "Why We Want to Help").

From his profile at: http://www.ncsasports.org/football-recruiting/georgia/macon/stratford-academy/tobe-umerah

"My collegiate goal is to attend an academically and athletically reputable Division IA institution where I am able to obtain a sound education. My college preferences include schools such as Stanford University, Georgia Tech, Notre Dame, UNC at Chapel Hill, and Duke."

Looks like a strong candidate to me.

So to assume Stanford will be playing the same style in the future with these types of athletic talents, as it did with lesser talents that won with scheme, and emphasizing one or two players, seems to me naive.

I am not quite sure what you are predicting/advocating for here.

I had previously tentatively agreed with your claim that  "it seems highly plausible that there is going to be more emphasis on passing in the coming years", with the caveat that I agreed if you meant something like we're going to see a 2011 level of passing (in style and frequency) rather than a 2015 or 2016 level of passing.

If you meant some high percentage passing attack, like most of the Big 12, I don't think we'll see Stanford do that under Shaw unless we don't have the horses to mount a functional run game. It seems clear to me that Shaw does not consider that an optimal offense, and it also doesn't seem to be the kind of offense that usually wins the national championship.

But, in the quotation above you seem to be emphasizing something different. Scheme vs. freelancing and spreading the ball around vs giving most touches to just a few players.

The rigid scheme thing is really more of a basketball argument than a football argument. Most every football team tries to find a scheme that they think will give them an advantage, and the freelancing thing just doesn't work in football.

As to emphasizing one or two players, that's an interesting thought. I agree that Stanford has tended to emphasize just a few players getting touches on offense. What is unclear to me is if that is different than any other team. I suspect that is just what happens on most teams, but maybe not. I will be watching on that score going forward.

At least if you believe the scouting services, then despite our recent very large uptick in recruiting, Stanford has not been one of the top two teams in recruiting - probably kicking around the teens in a 4/5 year span. That is okay though. I think you have to recruit well enough to give yourself a chance, and once you have met that floor other program issues matter more.

And, Stanford has clearly had the offensive firepower to compete for a national championship. In 2015 Stanford had the second most points per possession in the nation, and number one among Power 5 teams. In 2011 we were #2 and #2. What Stanford needs mostly is slightly better luck, then either the offense and defense having a peak year at the same time or somewhat lower valleys in performance so we can still win in a not-quite optimal offensive year.
And yes, I agree continued good recruiting should help enable that to happen.

Re: Class of 2018 - OutsiderFan - 03-10-2017

This is interesting...

4-star WR Michael Wilson, with offers from the rest of the Pac-12, ND, and Yale, doesn't have a Stanford offer after attending Junior Day.  Can anyone remember when Stanford wouldn't offer a kid like this, a 4-star WR with that offer list?

The Rivals story reporting this states Stanford only has offers out to three WRs, 5-star Jalen Hall, 5-star Amon-Ra St. Brown, and 4-star Alontae Taylor (#9 ATH on Rivals who is also now a Tennessee commit), and is going to be more focused on defense for the 2018 class.

This may be reading too much into the situation, but these data points suggest Stanford feels very confident about landing one of Hall or St. Brown, and possibly both.  Why else would they not offer Michael Wilson at this point, and risk him committing to a rival?  I mean we all know Stanford's pool of elite WRs who can be admitted is frighteningly small.

Now maybe they don't want to offer Wilson before he takes the SAT/ACT, but have Hall and St. Brown, who both have offers, taken those tests?

You seem to be changing the goalposts here.  Your original point was that guys like that were the type of guys that Stanford has historically had trouble recruiting.  I disagree.  I would say that QB, TE, and OL are historically areas that Stanford recruits well in. Now, maybe not all in one year, but certainly we've recruited QB's as highly touted as Mills (some guy named Elway, I hear was pretty highly touted coming out of high school), and more recently Luck.  We've had monstrous OL classes before, most recently in 2012 when we recruited Garnett, Peat, Murphy; all three were top-5 players at their positions.  And we have had no trouble recruiting elite tight ends.  Hell, just the year before we signed #2 Kaden Smith; two years before we signed #1 Dalton Schultz (which means we will have 2 #1 ranked TE's and a #2 ranked tight end on the roster this fall), and in 2009 we signed #4 Zach Ertz and #6 Levine Toilolo.  I struggle to find a position where we've consistently recruited as well.  Wide receiver is maybe the only place you might have a case, but Trent Irwin's ranking is comparable to St. Brown's.

It is of course a nice happenstance that we signed all these awesome players in the same year.  But, I really don't think that it would be accurate to say that we haven't signed guys like that before.

Re: Class of 2018 - OutsiderFan - 03-10-2017

Stanford has never signed the #1 QB, #1 and #2 OT, and #1 TE in the same class before 2017.  Very few teams have ever done this, if anyone else ever has.

Offensively our 2010 squad had as much if not more elite talent than college football team this decade

And the way that team was playing at the end of the season I think they could have beaten anyone.

And he has a 3.5 GPA according to this article on his visit to Arkansas.  He's clearly thinking about life after football.

If he gets admitted, and gets comfortable about the distance from home, our odds are very good.
