I don't want to speak too soon, but this lead seems pretty safe.  I could see Stanford potentially winning the Cup even if UCLA wins national championships in men's golf, baseball, and softball.

Re: Directors Cupdate - zedcom - 05-26-2015

Isn't this the comparison you want....Stanford's MINIMUM possible score vs. UCLA's MAXIMUM possible score?

That would be the trick.  The maximum is 1489, if you assume rowing can't win a title or get more than 47 cup points without boats in each portion of the regatta.  A fair assumption.

To get to 1489 UCLA would need to win 5 NCAA team titles in the next few weeks.  It would be an epic accomplishment worthy of the cup and so much more.  UCLA has three credible chances to win NCAA team titles (Baseball, Softball, Men's Golf).  However, UCLA has no chance, absolutely ZERO chance of winning the NCAA team titles in Men's or Women's Track & Field.  They will be very lucky to finish in the top 20 in those two events.  Give them 50 in each one.  More than they will get for sure, but let's say they do that.

Therefore the realistic maximum is 1389 for UCLA.  That would include 3 NCAA team titles and two amazing T&F results.

Things can happen, but UCLA is not getting up to 1389.  Oh and BTW, Stanford will finish with more than 1379.

Nice to track this cup until the last moments, but the race is essentially over.

FWIW - If UCLA does finish above 1400 they will have had such an amazing June that they deserve to win.

Re: Directors Cupdate - yvonne - 05-26-2015

How have the teams that were between Stanford and UCLA at the last official update done?

Re: Directors Cupdate - BigEasyCard - 05-26-2015

With just completed quarterfinal victory in Women's Golf, minimum Cup points are now about 80, making Cardinal margin over UCLA about 211 points.  Point scoring for Golf may have changed with addition of match play round, but 4th place earned 80 last year.

Geaux Cardinal!

I thought UNC was the only other worry. They got a good W Lax result. However, Denver helped us a lot with that M Lax win.

Hard to believe any other school could catch Stanford given Stanford's spring.

Worth a look.

F93--

North Carolina didn't qualify for the baseball or rowing fields, and didn't make it out of the regionals in either men's or women's golf (including their home regional where Stanford men qualified.)

Right now, if they won both outdoor T+F championships, they'd max out at around 610 for men and 700 for women.  Too many low scoring events would have to be scored, and only 2 top-4 finishes (they lost in the quarterfinals in 5 sports, and the round of 16 in 3 more).  Some uncertainty based on how their regional golf finishes (14th in women's, 8th in men's) end up being scored.

Re: Directors Cupdate - Farm93 - 05-26-2015

Only UCLA can get to 1400.  With a quick glance at the spring results all of the others in the top 10 can't do it even if they win NCAA team titles in EVERY sport that remains available to them.  And most of them have no chance of scoring big points in those sports.  Forget winning them.

Florida has the best chance to win 5 NCAA team titles, but that will only get them to 1200 or so.  And they aren't winning 5 NCAA team titles.
Texas realistically can only win 4, but that would only get them to 1100.

The B1G schools do not have credible chances for the T&F titles, but even if they did get them their poor spring tallies leave them well behind Stanford's spring tally and well below 1200 overall.

UNC could, in theory, get ~540 spring points with two track & field titles.  And that would only bring their total to 1360. BTW - That's not happening as they are not a T&F power.

So UCLA needs miracle workers on the track and 3 NCAA team titles just to catch Stanford's current tally.  No other school will get close to Stanford's current minimum.

Note - UNC's 1360 includes all sports without any regard for the 20 sport (10 & 10) cap.  If a school was under Stanford's current 1390 I did not bother to deduct since I was after a quick tally of those that could, in any way, exceed Stanford's ~1400.

Re: Directors Cupdate - fullmetal - 05-26-2015

Stanford excellence across the board.  I like it.

Re: Directors Cupdate - TrumpCard - 05-26-2015

The Stanford women's golf team is making all the calculations and permutations a moot point.  Stanford will probably win the Cup by a comfortable margin.  I'm just watching the NCAA Championship total to see if Stanford can keep pace with, or even gain on, UCLA this year.

Re: Directors Cupdate - Papa John - 05-26-2015

Anyone know what the current team national championship tally is? I'm getting conflicting numbers in my online searches, but I think that UCLA has 112 and Stanford is at 106 pending Wednesday's golf finals. Is that correct?

Re: Directors Cupdate - terry - 05-26-2015

Total NCAA team championships:

112  UCLA
106  Stanford
100  U'S'C

The match play win over U'S'C in women's golf gives our team a chance to win the championship, it gives us a chance to draw closer to UCLA in total championships, and it prevents U'S'C from moving up behind us.

Re: Directors Cupdate - TrumpCard - 05-26-2015

It's amazing that no other conference has as many NCAA titles as just the top three schools in the Pac-12.  And it's not close.  UCLA, Stanford and U$C lead by about 50 over the BigTen.  Here's an article with the tally as of the end of the 2013-2014 academic year.

Re: Directors Cupdate - terry - 05-26-2015

Yes, Stanford, UCLA, and U'S'C have lapped the field in NCAA team championships. The top 20 list shows how big the gap is:

112  UCLA
106  Stanford
100  U'S'C
51    Oklahoma St.
46    Penn St.
43    Arkansas
43    Texas
42    LSU
40    North Carolina
36    Michigan
34    C'al
30    Denver
29    Florida
28    Wisconsin
28    Yale
28    Georgia
27    Ohio St.
27    Maryland
26    Colorado
25    Oregon
25    Iowa

Pac-12 schools C'al, Colorado, and Oregon all are in the top 20. But they, along with the rest of the field, are far behind the top three.

Re: Directors Cupdate - GaryT - 05-26-2015

Stanford's current consecutive national championship streak of 39 years (not considering multiple championships in these years) would rank 10th on this list. Does anyone know what the next-longest current NC streak is? I'd guess that the likely candidates are UCLA, SC, Penn State, and UNC.

Thought about that today. USC does not have a title this year.  They could win one of the titles in June, but they are running out of chances.  Their active streak starts after the miss in 2006-2007.  So it stands at 7, but they need a June title to keep their active alive at 8.

I believe UCLA's last missed academic year was 1993-1994.  That would give them 21 and counting. That's probably the best active run.

OKState has a boat load of titles in wrestling, but does not have an active streak.
Penn State's last miss appears to be 2005-2006.  And it is active, so they are at 9.
Arkansas was fairly reliable with XC, IT&F or OT&F, but not recently.  No active streak.
Texas has a streak at 1.  Swimming.
LSU does not have an active streak.
UNC does not have an active streak.
Michigan's is at 2, but they need a title ASAP to get to 3.
UCB is active at 2.

The rest are unlikely to have longer active streaks than UCLA.  Would suspect that behind Stanford.  It is UCLA (21) , Penn State (9) and USC (7).

Re: Directors Cupdate - BostonCard - 05-26-2015

And I think we just ended one of USC's best chances to continue the streak.

Re: Directors Cupdate - GaryT - 05-26-2015

Thanks for the research.  The NC streak looks more and more impressive every year.
