Re: Northwestern Game Thread - SeattleTree - 09-05-2015

Looking slow is what really surprised me. A WR getting run down by a DL?

I don't know whether I am more disappointed in the execution or play calling.

Yeah, the defense is playing more or less the way I expected them to.

The offense? Very disappointing would be an understatement.

The O has been the big disappointment. Take away the first six plays of the game and we have got nothing done. We definitely need Rector and Cajuste in there.

Could not agree more about the line.  Of all the parts of the team, the OL and the QB were supposed to be the most stable and reliable.  But the OL has just not been there.

Do we know Rector will be in there the second half? Or is his suspension at least for the full game?  Any sign of Cajuste on the field?

According to the announcers Rector was only suspended for the first half so he will presumably be in there in the second.

Well that basically means not agreeing to any away games outside of the west coast, since neither team has any control over times.

What we really should do is travel early, since we can. I know it costs money, but just go over on Tuesday so we can adjust for a few days and play mostly as normal.

This is the better option for sure.

Re: Northwestern Game Thread - SeattleTree - 09-05-2015

Chins up, fellow Trees the coaching staff just doesn't want to reveal too much before the u$c game!

Re: Northwestern Game Thread - needle - 09-05-2015

Hogan has 54 yards passing and -7 yards rushing. This is shaping up like the Utah game last year (a 17-20 2OT loss, in case you blocked it out of your memory) when Hogan finished with 104 yards passing and was in the negatives in rushing yardage.

Re: Northwestern Game Thread - needle - 09-05-2015

Ok, someone tell me why the offense is going to score a touchdown in the second half?

Heck, it's not like we have classes in the first couple weeks.  Finally the quarter system would work in our favor!

Re: Northwestern Game Thread - socalstanfan1 - 09-05-2015

Unusual, but perhaps telling, stat: despite the fact that we have run 12 fewer plays, and have gained about 100 fewer yards,  we still have a time of possession advantage.  Maybe the coaches are intentionally trying to milk the clock to give the D as much time as possible to recover? or, we just run in and out of the huddle at an incredibly slow pace.  But sometimes I think that kind of slow pace can just drag everything down.

edit: I suppose one additional explanation for this is the low completion rate of the NW QB, who stops the clock with each incompletion.  Hogan actually has a great completion rate on those dink passes that gain 5 yards, so the clock keeps running.

Re: Northwestern Game Thread - BostonCard - 09-05-2015

Not a surprise.  We use the full clock while northwestern is hurrying.

Re: Northwestern Game Thread - dabigv13 - 09-05-2015

Our first drive was excellent aside from the red zone. I'd like to see a play action bomb as our first offensive play, and otherwise we need to just get back into a rhythm with our run game.

Re: Northwestern Game Thread - yvonne - 09-05-2015

Maybe the Shaw naysayers are right. Please tell me I'm wrong.

Re: Northwestern Game Thread - BostonCard - 09-05-2015

Well we blitzed on third and six and forced the rushed throw.

Re: Northwestern Game Thread - OutsiderFan - 09-05-2015

Another complaint...

Why do you have to give the ball to Love on that end around?  Why can't Hogan do a bootleg run off that action?  Northwestern's whole defense was going after Love before he even got the ball on the handoff.

It takes a special OC to make Bryce Love look slow.

Remember, Northwestern put 41 on the same Notre Dame defense Stanford looked anemic against last year.  I chalked it up to the lousy weather when Stanford played in South Bend.  Think I'm re-evaluating.

Re: Northwestern Game Thread - BostonCard - 09-05-2015

Timeout as the playclock winds down on the first play after the punt.  :'(

OK, here is where not watching the game is a real hinderance.  Wasn't aware NW was in any kind of hurry-up mode

Re: Northwestern Game Thread - needle - 09-05-2015

Time-out before the first offensive play of the second half? A new low.

Re: Northwestern Game Thread - dabigv13 - 09-05-2015

Ouch that timeout brings me back to the Nunes era. Come on guys....

the payback for this seems to be the typical 7:00pm or 7:30pm pacific kick-offs for teams from the eastern and central time zones when they play at Stanford, games ending ~2am for their local time (or course ND gets a pass on this since that game seems to always be at 5pm pacific)
