Brodie was out maybe 1960??

It was 1963 and he was 0-3 that year. I only know is because I was curious about his career and did some quick research on him a few months ago. I was even more surprised his pro career record was 74-76-8, in spite of the length of his career and his total passing yardage and # of TDs.  He also averaged just over one TD/game and one INT/game over the course of his pro career. By the time I learned he also had a decent PGA career, my head had popped. Also, born in Menlo, raised in Oakland, then came back to play at Stanford - who said you can't go home again?... :-)  Interesting guy indeed - I guess he is still with us, no?

Serious illness for years but Brodie is now 90 years old.
Except for Preston Reilly John would have played in a Super Bowl

He had a unique career - for 20+ years, from high school through the NFL, he never played for any team outside the Bay Area - Oakland Tech, Stanford, SF 49ers.

Good job, Stanford QB fans!

Maybe Dils and Schonert? (Alongside Plunkett and Elway)

I thought about Benjamin but I believe he was a pure back-up at this point and Montana’s back-up wasn’t starting!

You got it! This foursome won at least one start in 1983 and then again in 1986. Benjamin indeed was a back-up in 1983. Bonus question: Who was the other Stanford alum QB in 1986?

The other QB in 1986 was Babe Laufenberg who was on the Saints roster. Collectively in the 1980s, six Stanford alum QBs had 23 seasons with at least one winning start. At the other extreme, in the aughts, Trent Edwards was the only one with winning starts (2007-2009).

John Paye?

Good thought, Hurlburt! Per Wikipedia, “Paye was selected in the tenth round of the 1987 NFL draft by the San Francisco 49ers and stayed two seasons with the team, but saw no action in the regular season.” Pro-Football-Reference.com has no entry for him.

RE: Sports trivia thread 2025 - BobK - 01-11-2026

IRRC Paye’s arm injury late in his Stanford career was never the same again
Still Paye remains the only starting QB and PG I can remember at Stanford

Not so close second, Tavita joined the bball team when injuries??? shorted the guard position. I don’t think he ever entered an actual game though.

RE: Sports trivia thread 2025 - BostonCard - 01-11-2026

Teyo never played at QB, but he was a pretty good basketball/football player.

RE: Sports trivia thread 2025 - BobK - 01-11-2026

Tevo was a forward
In the 50s 60s we had several starters in both sports

Sure was. And he'll always have that SI cover.

Which NFL team has won the most postseason games since WWII?

RE: Sports trivia thread 2025 - PAsportsfan - 01-12-2026

Dallas?

The Packers won a bunch of championships in the old days, but the "since WW II" gives me pause.

I'm sure it's wrong but I'll go with the homer pick: the 49ers

RE: Sports trivia thread 2025 - Leftcoast - 01-12-2026

There are SO many more post season games each year than in the past so it has to be a team that’s won consistently in the past 30 years.

New England or SF

RE: Sports trivia thread 2025 - BostonCard - 01-12-2026

New England?

On the other side, the Steelers just made the longest playoff losing streak in the AFC with seven consecutive losses since 2016 (when they lost in the afc championship).  But who holds the record for most consecutive playoff losses in the NFL,  with 9?

RE: Sports trivia thread 2025 - Giants - 01-12-2026

Covering both of my top choices - NE and SF are tied for the top spot?

RE: Sports trivia thread 2025 - Mick - 01-13-2026

Papa John, Leftcoast, Giants...all correct.

With their win over the Eagles, the 49ers now have 40 postseason wins since 1946, the founding of the AAFC. 39 of those wins were in the NFL, one was in the AAFC.

The Patriots have 37, all during the Super Bowl era. The Niners have 31 postseason wins during the Super Bowl era.

If we’re counting the full pro-football postseason since WWII and including the AAFC:
San Francisco 49ers postseason wins (NFL + AAFC) That “40” total lines up with the recent milestone chatter: they entered the Eagles game with 39 postseason wins, and their wild-card win over Philadelphia pushed them to 40.

That was a good question, Mick, but I got it both right and wrong.
