Here's something else to remember. Similar to the old BCS, it helps for Voldemort candidates to be on the radar early. Young Mr. McCaffrey, as we're all aware, is only a sophomore. Regardless of what happens this year, he'll enter 2016 as one of the top candidates.
Right now, I'm predicting that McC will have a better year this year than next.
Next year he'll be a Voldemort favorite and every team will be focusing on him. Making him their #1 focus in stopping our offense.
No one will kick to him or punt to him.Â
And I predict he'll be splitting some carries with Love. I expect Love to get 15-20 touches a game (at least) next year.Â
If I had my way, Love + McC would be on the field together at ALL times. Either two back sets, or one of them in the slot at all times.Â
Our offense is too good when they're both on the field to NOT have them playing together...

I've been wondering about that. That's going to be SOOOO exciting, the two of them! YES!

Wow. Look at how defenses have loaded the box to stop McCaffrey. Over 59% of his carries have been against 8 or more in the box.

What planet are the commenters living on where the main thing they take away is how good Cook looks because he has a higher average against 8 or more. Do they miss the part where CMac is doing it 60% of the time?!

ESPN Voldemort Watch has McC in 3rd place (2 votes behind 2nd place). Henry with a comfortable lead.

So if the vote happened today, McC would at least get his invite to New York!
Big opportunity for him to make up some ground the next 2 games.

Voldemort award has definitely lost some of its prestige over the last decade. And then there's the "curse"...
Hope CMAC is invited, but I don't expect he'll win it even if he breaks Sanders's record. And he definitely won't win it if we lose to UDFG.
Go Cardinal!
Sanders' Oklahoma State Cowboys faced only four .500 or better teams among their 11 regular season opponents, and three of them won 0, 0 and 1 games. The opponents' overall record was 52-71 during the season. Stanford will have faced eight teams with .500 or better records and a cumulative record of 73 and 58.
Just sayin'

I think he has a shot. It's not like the voters from Alabama's region would leave a player everyone else has as #1 or #2 off of their ballots entirely to help their guy.

Yeah, the four deepest guys on the kickoff return team were McCaffrey, Love, Sanders, and Wright.

McCaffrey has been named one of three finalists for the Maxwell Award, the Doak Walker Award, and the Hornung Award.

Actually, he's one of four finalists for the Hornung Award, given to the nation's most versatile player:
Adoree' Jackson, Jabrill Peppers, Robert Nkemdiche, and Christian McCaffrey

One of three for the Maxwell Award, given to college football's player of the year:
Derrick Henry, Christian McCaffrey, Deshaun Watson
One of three for the Doak Walker Award, given to the nation's top running back:
Derrick Henry, Christian McCaffrey, Leonard Fournette

Janet Evans?

I spoke with an older alum at a recent event and she told me that the AD via a very good SID at Stanford really got behind Jim Plunkett with an aggressive campaign for the Voldemort. He was up against Theisman the Voldemort! There is clearly an east coast bias and all of our late start games have given CMac minimal exposure to the east coast yahoos.Â
We did very little for Toby and Andrew and it doesn't seem like we learned much from that process. Times have clearly changed, but what can be done to make the case for CMac?  I'm of the mind that we should already have 3 trophies in the Trophy room. This kid deserves more accolades and the marketing prowess that can be put forward.

I am more than a tad surprised no one has brought it up, but isn't it time we pull out all the stops and enlist (or draft) Good Grief. Hope my memory serves me correctly.

This is brobdingnagian news.
But it made me realize just how important the next 2 games for us are.
If Stanford loses either of the next 2 games, McC won't win any of these awards (or the Voldemort).
McC needs to play well, and Stanford needs to win, or I don't see him winning any of these awards (except the Hornung - he's a shoe-in for that win).
Let's do it boys! Not that the guys needed any more motivation, but after these announcements, I think the line is going to give it that little extra oomph to give their man the victory.

Well, I'm not sure I'd use the Plunkett campaign as a model for a modern day effort - the enthusiasm yes, the strategy, not so much.Â
The Stanford AD at the time was the inimitable Bob Murphy who later became Stanford's radio announcer. You may remember Murphy from his NCAA tournament/Madsen "AND he was FOULED" call among many others. According to legend Murphy's budget for Plunkett's campaign was all of $350 and ran mostly on enthusiasm and Murphy's mouth. Here's a nice retrospective on Murphy from his induction into the Bay Area sports hall of fame.

Fortunately, the online fan voting only determines 1 of the 17 votes for the Hornung Award. The Michigan fans are already stuffing the ballot for Peppers.

Fan votes for these things are so stupid. I'm glad they rarely matter much, though 1/17 is actually quite a high percentage (Voldemort is like 1/300, right?).
