Well, there is the whole turning the instruments of torture on one's tormentors thing
... but overall, yeah that has always been a bit of a mascot/symbol issue at Stanford.

Watching that had my 4-month-old riveted. Makes me optimistic about bringing him to the game next week. BTW if anyone has any tips about babies at games I'd love to hear them.

The noise cancelling headphones that they put on Michael Phelps' kid seemed to work.

2009 recruting class - ChicagoCard - 08-26-2016
For die-hard Stanford and college football fans, Bruce Feldman talked about the 2009 Stanford recruiting class from 16:50 - 19:30 in his and Stewart Mandel's "The Audible" podcast yesterday...
https://soundcloud.com/the-audible/825-are-sec-coaches-ratting-our-ole-miss-to-the-ncaa
They, or Bruce, said that Jemari Roberts was actually the highest ranked recruit in that class. They began (a little earlier, just after 15 minutes in) talking about the 2009 class in general and the fact that Taysom Hill (initially a Stanford recruit in that class) had just been named a starter at 26 years of age.
This seemed the most appropriate thread, short of a new one.

The 2009 class was remarkable, in various ways. It was responsible for keeping Stanford from being a flash in the pan at the top of college football, if not necessarily for its rise.
And it was remarkable despite a few guys who mostly played elsewhere (Hill and Najvar), the two highly recruited WRs having some troubles, and one guy having to retire early due to injury (Meinken). Everyone else (17 guys) became a major contributor.Â
Jemari Roberts was not the highest ranked recruit, however. In Scout, the guys in the top 300 were Shayne Skov (40) Zach Ertz (81) Levine Toilolo (132) Josh Nunes (155) Usua Amanam (192) Tyler Gaffney (206) Terrence Stephens (222) Jamal Rashad-Patterson (229)
Jemari Roberts (238) Stepfan Taylor (247).
I guess they were looking at Rivals recruiting rankings. According to Rivals, Skov was our top recruit at #45 in the country and Roberts was next at #124.
EDIT - finally got a chance to actually listen to the podcast.
Feldman mentions that he wasn't that surprised by Burns winning the competition for QB because he had been talking to guys in the program who had told him that Burns had outplayed Chryst - he said it with a tone that sounded like "clearly outplayed", but don't think he used the word clearly. This is just before the discussion of Taysom Hill.
The Taysom Hill saga is kind of interesting.
He signed with Stanford in 2009.
For reasons that varied in different interviews, he did not actually ever attend Stanford. He went on a mission to Australia. That mission did not line up with the school year, perhaps because of being in the southern hemisphere. So, after his two year mission he enrolled at BYU in spring semester 2012, counting as a 2012 entry and effectively a three year hiatus due to the misison. He got injured a lot at BYU, the worst being last year where he got injured in the first game thus got a medical redshirt.
So, after a three year hiatus because of his misison, he is now entering his fifth year of playing and his 10th semester of school thus being named starting QB on his 26th birthday.

Nesting dolls. In order, it's Luck, Taylor, Wilkerson, G. Whalen, and Fleener. So it's either 2010 or 2011 from what I can tell. I'd like to think it was made 5 years ago and has spent the entire time bouncing around souvenir shops until I came along. There are lots for NFL teams or other college teams like Alabama, but this was the only I ever saw for Stanford.

ESPN has their own countdown, which is 6 days until the national kickoff -- notably not counting Cal vs. Hawaii happening tonight because... why would they count that?
Number 6 is McCaffrey's 6 300 all-purpose yard games from last season. No other player had more than 2 and five others had 1, which means he had 6/13 of the total for all of college football.
