PS, I wonder if Webb regrets decomitting from Colorado.

Actually, the one bright spot for Oregon this year was the rather miraculous emergence of Justin Herbert at QB. The kid was a true freshman out of Eugene who was basically unrecruited - I see 247 lists offers from UO, Montana State, Portland State and Northern Arizona. At the time I thought it was a help out the local kid kind of offer. He didn't even seem to be their main QB recruit - that would be a guy named Wilson out of Oklahoma. He also wasn't an early entry - not showing up until the summer/fall camp. But he displaced this year's Oregon transfer QB in game #6 and then played very well, especially for a true frosh.

He completed 64% of his passes at 7.6 yds/attempt with 19 TDs, 4 INTs, and PER=149.

For comparison, last year's notable true frosh QBs (who I think made their respective spring camps) were,
Browning, completed 63% of passes at 8.0 yds/attempt with 16 TDs, 10 INTs, and PER=139.
Rosen, completed 60% of passes at 7.5 yds/attempt with 23 TD, 11 INTs, and PER=134.

People missed it with Oregon's struggles overall, but Herbert was rather amazing. However, that appears to be pure blind luck in saving them from the issues of development that might be encapsulated by relying upon transfers. May Cal see no such luck in their future.

USF is a coaching trap, and Taggart escapes. He's the only coach to ever win 10 games at a place that has outsized expectations relative to their pecking order in the state.

True, USF benefitted this year from their rival, UCF, being in a rebuilding stage. But Taggart also won 8 games last year. I think Taggart is a good coach with a little bit of EUTM, for sure.

Oregon is a coaching trap, and Taggart walked into it.  He will win some games at a place that has outsized expectations relative to their pecking order on the West Coast.

Sure they have Uncle Phil's money, but I think they have a recruiting ceiling.  The previous regime worked around it with a system that used track athletes.  That system could not get them past talented and well coached teams that they face in major bowl games.

My prediction is that Taggart will deliver better results than Helfrich but not better than Kelly.

Our problem is Chris Petersen and the Huskies.  I can see him staying there until he retires.  We need to upgrade offensive coaching otherwise we will keep bringing knifes to a gun fight.

Re: Coaching carousel - needle - 12-07-2016

Ha, good stuff, Publius. I think it's too early to write off Oregon just yet, but you may very well be right.

Re: Coaching carousel - BostonCard - 12-07-2016

As a former Stanford coach, now coaching a rival, I wish Taggert moderate amounts of success in his new position.  Good enough not to be fired, but not good enough to beat us.

Same. I actually think Taggart's walking into a good situation. Oregon put up a good offense despite starting a true freshman at QB and four freshmen along the offensive line. That's a very good indicator for success on the offensive end. Defensively, it's so dire that you'd imagine competence along would make for big gains.

So you wish that he is Jim Mora?

That's a pretty odd statement, and I guess it relies upon a rather broad definition of a coaching trap.

Until a month ago, Oregon hadn't fired a coach in 40 years.
It would seem to me a pretty good definition of a coaching trap is a place that continually fires coaches because they don't have the resources to win, refuse to admit it, and keep fantasizing that the next coach will be the guy to magically create a winning program.

Also, until a month ago, every head coach for forty years either moved on to the NFL or became Athletics Director. Not exactly a dead end.

If you mean that the duckies are unlikely to win a national championship, I think that is true. But that is true for probably at least 120 of the 128 FBS teams, so it doesn't seem a strong statement.

Quote:Sure they have Uncle Phil's money, but I think they have a recruiting ceiling.

That they do. As does most every program in the country. For several years they were coming in low teens or so, and without a strong home-base they probably won't consistently rise much higher.

But, you can win a lot of games if you consistently recruit in that range.

Quote:My prediction is that Taggart will deliver better results than Helfrich but not better than Kelly.

That's a pretty safe prediction, particularly if you mean the results Helfrich achieved this year. Lifetime Helfrich has a 70% win rate, which is better than all but a handful of active coaches.
Fortunately one of those handful is our guy, who has a 79% win rate.

Re: Coaching carousel - Spiny_Norman - 12-07-2016

Oregon was a very good team on offense this year and likely will continue to be successful under Taggert.  Their season tanked because they could not stop anyone.  Maybe the important hire for Oregon is whoever replaces Brady Hoke as DC.

Fun fact about Willie Taggert I learned from watching Pac 12 football replays on the P12 Network - he suggested the halfback pass for Toby Gerhart vs N.otre Dame in 2009 on 4th down in the 4th quarter with Stanford down 38-30.

Re: Coaching carousel - fullmetal - 12-07-2016

Oregon should have kept Helfrich and fired Hoke (if the AD can do such a thing).  But it's nice to see Taggart get his watershed moment, though never at the expense of Stanford.

USF has really done well the last couple of seasons--I hadn't kept up with them, and when I saw their season record today, I see why Oregon hired him.  I hope he takes his staff with him...

Re: Coaching carousel - larkinforever - 12-09-2016

The latest coaching rumor is Charlie Strong as Oregon DC (if he doesn't get the HC job at USF).

Our toughest Pac 12 competitors have seemed to rotate (other than Oregon until this season), with ASU, UCLA and others seeming to emerge only to fall back after a strong season or two, but the emergence of UW seems somehow more permanent (perhaps because of Petersen?) - if there is staying power to WSU's/U$C's/Colorado's/Utah's resurgence, and if Taggart (and Strong, if that happens) can execute a quick re-power at Oregon, we could be in for some brutal, brutal Pac 12 schedules...

Sanford is on the way up. One of a small handful of young guys who could one day be Stanford coach. Assuming Shaw isn't the next Amos Stagg.
