Ha.ha. True that.
Actually if your name isn't Bing, or Arrillaga, or in that stratosphere, I think the powers that be construe threats to stop donating over Issue X to be non-actionable on their part.

It appears to be current. I don't see anything that would imply a heavy-handed attempt to effect an unfriendly takeover of LSJUMB. There is an expectation that the director will "work closely with Student Affairs on many aspects of band management, including coordinating the strategic planning and development of the LSJUMB." But that seems reasonable based on recent events. Let the full time director deal with managing up the chain of administrative bureaucracy rather than expect the students to do so. On the other hand, we should pay close attention if Stanford hires Dolores Umbridge for the position.
That announcement is very, very troubling to me. I read through all the text and did not really find much to object to, until I looked at the reporting relationships.
The position will be IN the Athletics Department, with a "reporting relationship" to Student Affairs, and will report directly to the Senior Associate AD. It does NOT appear to be in the music department. From my reading of the position, it will NOT be a tenured professor who will have some security or ability to stand up the the administration. Therefore it CANNOT be an Arthur Barnes, but will be a functionary without tenure.Â
I really do like the idea of having someone who teaches and arranges music, as the text of the announcement seems to say. Why such a person would not be a tenure line faculty member in the Music department is now obvious. This is "too important" to the administration to leave it in the hands of a laissez faire faculty member. So now the Athletics Department is going into the music business.
Maybe that was already the case? But the disingenuous comparison to Arthur P Barnes is now exposed for what it is.
By the way, is Barnes still alive? His wiki doesn't say. It would be interesting to hear from him. The wiki says this:
Quote:In 2000, after three years with only a part-time director, the Stanford Band raised $1.5 million for an endowed chair in Barnes' name, The Dr. Arthur P. Barnes Endowment for the Stanford Director of Bands, to fund a full-time band director to replace Barnes
Also this:
Quote:Under his watch, he devoted most of his attention to directing Stanford's symphony and wind ensembles, while leaving the marching band almost entirely in the hands of the students.
Art Barnes never set out to 'manage' the Stanford Band. He set out to be their leader. He has evolved into being their mentor, their friend, their guide and their buffer from the University administration. And like the best leaders, he surrounded himself with some very bright people and allowed them to do their best.

Quote:This job description is actually the same as was used for Giancarlo's contract (or very very close to it. I helped draft it in '13). This job was not intended to take over student management as the university is now expecting. It was intended to 1) find a director who would continue the relatively hands-off approach band actually wants on decision making, 2) make more contributions to improving the musicality of the organization than Giancarlo could ever be bothered to do (the search started when band rejected Giancarlo taking a massive salary from band endowments while providing minimal help to the band, even when asked repeatedly), and 3) take on some of the role handled by band's student affairs liason. With a decent, open-minded person in this role, the university could have supported and strengthened student management rather than usurping their roles.
Quote:There is plenty to be upset about, but this isn't it. This was part of a process by band and for band to improve its musicality.
If anything, it's proof that the students do care about improving the organization.

Nice of the Sun Bowl to provide a band to represent Stanford (local HS band)...

Better reference: According to this
local (El Paso) news story, it was the Stanford Band that chose Horizon High School.

The article quotes some guy from the Sun Bowl committee saying,
Quote:The band committees started giving suggestions, a nice list of suggestions, and their band crew over at Stanford started making phone call (sic)
I rather suspect that "their band crew over at Stanford" consisted of either Greg Boardman or a drone in the athletic department.

Unless I'm misunderstanding the timeline, it sounds like the fix was in long ago:
http://elpasoheraldpost.com/horizon-band-stanford-stand-in/
There is no way all of the things that are reported to have happened in selecting this replacement band took place between last Friday and right now. More likely, the administration decided early this year there was no way they were letting the Band go to another Bowl game...
A great opportunity for these HS kids, and I hope they really enjoy it.
But, the administration is [are?] a bunch of weasels...
-------
looks like first contact was before 04 Nov based on the part below from the original article. The Big Game travel ban was announced on 15 Nov so this appears to have been in the works before that ban was announced
Earlier this year, one of those Sun Bowl officials made the trek to the High Desert to watch Hanks take on Horizon [game was on 04 Nov] for the final game of the season. During pregame, that official watched as the drumline rehearsed nearly non-stop prior to the game; he admired their talent and work ethic, and looked forward to seeing them in action later that night.
Unfortunately, the performance never took place as a severe storm moved through the area, forcing the band during senior night into the safety of the band hall. But the warm up stuck with the representative, and Horizons name was passed along to the Stanford officials.
A few weeks and several Horizon High Band YouTube videos later, those same Stanford and Sun Bowl officials met with Principal Acosta and decided the band was the right fit for the job.

IMO, the administration is being cowardly. They say that they worry about liability, but I believe that they really are worried about the band offending someone. The satire of the LSJUMB has always been offensive to someone. All satire is offensive to someone, by definition. The administration has decided that they must rid this "offensive" organization from Stanford and they are using alcohol and alleged mysogyist incidents achieve this goal. Without a major change in the administration, I believe that the LSJUMB, as we know it, is toast.
This is very similar to the ban of Kevin Hogan's fraternity. There were some jokes made at a party, drinking was involved, followed by a complaint, a Title IX investigation with little chance to defend, and then the ban hammer came down. IIRC, there were no allegations of physical sexual assault. Just words.
The new age assault on speech at Stanford that "offends" someone has been used to go after institutions and traditions widely considered to be conservative and/or male dominated. The irony is that this speech cleansing tactic is now being turned on those who championed it.
