Re: CMAC not playing in Sun Bowl?!? - GoodGrief - 12-19-2016

I completely support CMac in that decision. In some ways, it was probably harder to decide not to play than to play. Injuries happen, and he needs to protect himself.

Troy Walters suffered a pretty serious wrist injury while practicing for the 2000 Rose Bowl. Wouldn't want something like that to derail Cmac's pro career.  (and yes, Troy did play after doctors decided that he couldn't injure the wrist any worse. And yes, he did make that diving catch that was a big lift to the team and the crowd, and it was absolutely heroic of him. But he was largely a decoy during the game, and it's a reminder of how injuries are always a possibility).

Bummer about Cmac, but all the best to him, and I'm going to enjoy watching Love running circles around UNC.

And Willie Howard played with a partially torn knee ligament.

It has already happened. Charles Walker (Oklahoma DL) quit the team mid-November of this year with two regular season games remaining in order to prepare for the draft.

Jay Tyler for punt returns?

At the Oregon game, fellow New Orleanians Jay Tyler and Terence Alexander were back to receive the fourth quarter kickoffs.  One or both of them might step up in the Sun Bowl.

Geaux Cardinal!

Using this logic, no player who expects to go high in the draft should participate in a bowl game (or maybe even in the last few games of the season) out of fear of injury.
It will be unfortunate if college football comes to this. Perhaps it is on its way.

Wow. The negative response to this has a strong odor of entitlement.

The only people Christian has to explain this to are his teammates. And no one here knows what they think.

As fans, we are owed nothing. That this diminishes Christian in some of your eyes says more about you than it does about him. He was a shooting star at Stanford and we were fortunate; so, so, so very fortunate, to get a glimpse of him and to call him our own for those times.

Thought experiment: would you rather future athletes of Christian's caliber (not saying there will ever be any) NOT come to Stanford, if you knew they would leave prior to a meaningless exhibition game?

Interesting that you feel we as fans can't understand our great fortune in counting Christian as one of our own these last three years and still be disappointed by most recent decision. The two sentiments are not at all mutually exclusive.

I feel extremely fortunate to have watched Christian as a Cardinal these last 3 years, fully understand why he made he decision he did, and am still disappointed by it. If that makes me entitled, so be it. But I don't think things are quite as black and white as you see them; they are more nuanced.

Excellent post, SeattleTree.

I remain a big fan of C-Mac, he has represented the university very well and he makes me proud as an alum. I don't feel that he personally owes me anything, so I don't feel entitled with respect to him. But I am still disappointed in his decision, and would be surprised if his teammates and coaches didn't feel disappointed for the most part. My only caveat is that we may not know all the relevant information that went into his decision.

P.S. I am surprised by the repeated references to the Sun Bowl as an "exhibition", it is certainly no more of an exhibition than the season finale against Rice.

It's the absolute and exact opposite of exhibition.  It is the ultimate game against the best opponent we deserve, in front of a large audience, giving us an extra month of practice and preparation, and affording recruits an additional game to view us.  An exhibition is the Red v. White scrimmage.

Re: CMAC not playing in Sun Bowl?!? - FarmBoy - 12-19-2016

As much as I want to just be happy for CMAC and move on to getting excited to watch Love/Irwin/Schultz featured in the Sun Bowl, the thing I keep coming back to is this idea that he has decided playing THIS game is not worth his future risk. Why this game and not the game against Rice? Why play any game after we were eliminated from the Pac12 North? Why play any game after we got blown out by UW and clearly had no shot at the CFP? I guess I'm just old fashioned that you go to a school and suit up for the love of the school, your teammates and the game. The longer I watch college football, the more torn I feel about it. Clearly it is not a pure amateur athletic pursuit, nor has it been for a long time, if ever. But it feels like it's becoming much less so than when I was at Stanford 20 years ago.

Perhaps I'd feel more good will if he'd confided that this was due to injuries and that if he were able to perform at a high level, he'd be willing to play. But the statement as it exists just leaves me wondering why these guys bother to play at all once the games no longer have an impact on their future earning potential.

But I am excited to see what those other guys do without him.

If we were in the Rose Bowl, I think CMac would play.  But to risk damage in what is essentially an exhibition-type game vs an unranked opponent...I really don't fault his decision.
Nevertheless, I am disappointed.  :'(

So as near I can tell "I don't want to get injured" gives moral authority for any senior who doesn't want to play in the bowl game.  Right?

Will this cost Christian McCaffrey draft spots and money? - Mick - 12-19-2016

My personal opinion is that McCaffrey will hurt his draft position.  He wasn't the H trophy winner, he wasn't even mentioned in this year's discussion.  He was hurt earlier with nagging injuries, and really only improved against lowly defenses.  Had he played in the Sun Bowl, it would have enabled him to perform really well against North Carolina's #113 ranked rushing defense.

NFL GMs and scouts are hypersensitive to negative information.  With this decision, will they wonder if McCaffrey has an injury that has perhaps not healed?  Is he a team player and will he let his drafting NFL team down at a crucial moment?  Why wouldn't he play against a terrible run defense in a mid-level bowl?  And if Bryce Love has an outstanding game...which he should...will that say something about McCaffrey?  What if Scarlett gains 100+ yards?

What do YOU think?

Maybe My Age is Showing But I Am Astonished and Angry - AncientCityIndian - 12-19-2016

I am not quite as understanding as most on this board.  I think it is in bad form and somewhat of an act of ingratitude.  Either you are part of the team for the entire season regardless of result or you are not.  Does one think for a second if we were playing Alabama in the Peach Bowl CMac would be home in Colorado working out?  Possibly there are some teammates who are not too happy about this decision, IMO.  :o
