VG

The tie is broken by the lower 5th (drop) score.  U.SC and Florida both had a drop score of 79 today. So they go back to yesterday when U.SC dropped 78 vs 81 for Florida.

Re: Last woman standing: NCAA golf begins - oldalum - 05-22-2017

that's ok, U$C will take care of NW for us in the semis, while we take care of Fla.
then we just have to beat U$C. Oh, wait . . .

Re: Last woman standing: NCAA golf begins - Spiny_Norman - 05-22-2017

Stanford played U.SC in the semifinals in 2015 and beat them, then defeated Baylor in a classic for the championship that they will be talking about for a long time.  Last year U.SC lost in the quarters to Duke which then lost to Stanford in the semis.

Shannon Aubert and Casey Danielson both played in the 2015 match vs. Baylor and both won.  Dylan Kim from Baylor also played.  She beat Stanford's Lauren Kim.

The pairings are set.  As expected, Coach Walker deferred so that the Baylor coach had to choose first at pairings 1, 3, and 5.  Here is how it came out:

Match 1 - Shannon Aubert (4) vs. Maggie Beth Byers (3)
Match 2 - Albane Valenzuela (3) vs. Dylan Kim (2)
Match 3 - Andrea Lee (1) vs. Maria Vesga (5)
Match 4 - Casey Danielson (2) vs. Fiona Liddell (4)
Match 5 - Maddie Chou (5) vs. Amy Lee (1)

Re: Last woman standing: NCAA golf begins - oldalum - 05-22-2017

Any speculations on our coach's strategy with the pairings? Match Aubert against a bogey machine so she doesn't have to make birdies to win? Why do you think Walker chose to put Lee up against their #5? Because she was their second-best player so far? Seems like we outsmarted Baylor in wasting their #1 against our #5?

I remember that Shannon wanted to go first in one of the previous championships, I wonder if she asked for that position again.

Very interesting stuff and illustrates why match play is so different than the stroke preliminaries.

A reminder that two years ago we beat Baylor dramatically in the match play final to win the NCAA championship.

Unless Coach Walker goes on the record, all we can do is speculate on her strategy.  But I think she wanted an experienced player in Match 1.  That would be Aubert or Danielson.  Then the other would be an anchor at the back in match 4 or 5.

However the matchups at 4 and 5 were determined by the Baylor coach.  Walker put up Danielson in slot 4.  The Baylor coach could have matched his #1 player Amy Lee (a transfer from U.SC) vs. Danielson.  But he chose a true frosh Fiona Liddell, knowing that the final matchup would be his 1 vs. Stanford's 5.  Seems like a risky play.  If you watched his body language, you might infer that he is playing a hunch.

He knows Danielson from 2 years ago, so maybe he is willing to play a hunch.

Here's a link to this morning's Quarterfinals: http://www.ncaa.com/2017-di-womens-golf-leaderboard
Change the dropdown from Stroke to Match and then select Quarterfinals.

Aubert tees off in 17 minutes.

Just the matchups coach wanted.

Lee +4 vs. Vesga +10
Valenzuela +7 vs Kim +14
Danielson +15 vs Liddle +26
Aubert +17 vs. Byers +34

Win three of those four and the mismatch leading off--our #5 vs their #1--doesn't matter.

TBH I'm a little surprised that Walker stacked our lineup. Generally when you have the stronger lineup you play it straight and let the opposing coach with the weaker lineup juggle.

Re: Last woman standing: NCAA golf begins - slide - 05-23-2017

2-2-1 in the early going

Ariz. State up big over Fla. - oldalum - 05-23-2017

about halfway through, Ariz State is leading by 5, 4, 3, 2, and AS

3-2 us - oldalum - 05-23-2017

Baylor has 3 and 4 hole leads on Aubert and Chou about halfway through; looks like we're going to need the other three, where we have slim leads.

Re: Last woman standing: NCAA golf begins - Hulk01 - 05-23-2017

Danielson may be the key.  She's a career 5-1 in NCAA final match play.  Three wins went to the final hole, a fourth to the 17th.

Surprised to see Aubert struggling.  The scores coming into her match strongly favored her.

Watching on Golf Channel. Looks like a wet day.

Re: Last woman standing: NCAA golf begins - DC 86 - 05-23-2017

At this point the lower seeded team is leading three of the four quarterfinals (including Kent 3-1-1 over NW), and ASU is blitzing Florida 5-0 in the other.

Re: Last woman standing: NCAA golf begins - Hulk01 - 05-23-2017

Front nine scores:
Lee 35, Valenzuela 37, Danielson 38, Aubert 40, Chou 41.

Played the final three holes in ten over, despite Lee being minus one in that stretch.

Re: Last woman standing: NCAA golf begins - BobK - 05-23-2017

Just now back to 2-2-1.  Valenzuela is the player even with Baylor

Re: Last woman standing: NCAA golf begins - oldalum - 05-23-2017

Valenzuela is very experienced in int'l match play so I have a lot of confidence in her.
Aubert has climbed back to one down AS!  Now 2-1-2 ours
