Watched the game and do not understand that decision at all.

I think it was understandable, and the type of decision coaches should make more frequently. If you're on the road and the worse team, what would you say the odds in OT are? Two to one against? OK, now what about the odds of gaining a handful of yards? Prooobbably better.

Anybody buying this comment from a UW fan about Petersen's late games comments and how they may have affected their team this week?...

Nah, that seems silly.

Re: Other Games of Interest in Week 7 - needle - 10-14-2017

The camera did catch Petersen yawning on the sideline (I think it was in the 3rd Q).

I believe that’s four of the top 10 teams losing this week.  All to (I think) I ranked teams.

Although it's still early, but we many just be heading to a rematch with the Toejams in the Pac-12 CCG.  Winning out and taking them down would be too sweet.

Re: Other Games of Interest in Week 7 - lex24 - 10-14-2017

I would have kicked it. But after looking at the stats, I can see your point. SC had about 550 yards. He must have felt they were not going to stop SC.

Wasn't crazy about rolling him out. Makes a tight field even tighter. I saw a video, however, Carrington was wide open in back of EZ. Williams didn't see him

Quote: Final nail in Mora’s coffin?

If all the Pac-10 traditional rivalry games were played next week, I think UCLA would be the biggest underdog.

Re: Other Games of Interest in Week 7 - OutsiderFan - 10-15-2017

First of all, Southern Cal is just UCLA with better players.  What a terrible coach Helton is.  Southern Cal should have lost to Texas, possibly Cal, and got lucky to beat Utah.  I said last week that Utah isn't very good and Southern Cal would smash them, based on my belief Southern Cal was good.  After sleepwalking to a 21-7 deficit, they woke up, but Stanford beat Utah more soundly.  Southern Cal is not the team I thought they were, and apparently, neither are Washington and Washington State.

Stanford's run defense isn't good enough to beat teams that can run well and pass effectively.

Run well and pass decently: USC, SDSU, Washington
Don't run well and if they do, can't pass:  Rice, UCLA, ASU, Utah, Oregon, Oregon State, Washington State, Cal, ND

At this point, have to think Stanford will beat WSU.  They are a one-dimensional passing team and Stanford can play a very similar defense to Cal.  Combine this with Stanford's offense, and Stanford is too much for the Cougs.  So it really could come down to that Friday night game in November to decide the North.

Don't put Southern Cal in the title game just yet, because they would seem to have another loss in them, but even if they are in it, Stanford just doesn't have the front seven horses to stop the run well enough to beat them, IMO.  I know Phillips and Kalambayi were out for the first half vs. Oregon, but Stanford gave up 276 and 6.4 YPC to the floats.  If they had any semblance of a passing game, Stanford would have been in a 35-35-type game in the fourth quarter.

I've upped my pre-season Stanford prediction from 8-4 and no chance to win the North, to 9-3, with a sliver of a hope to get to 10-2 and win the North, given the pratfalls of the Washingtons in Week 7.  But given Washington is a balanced team with a very good defense, Stanford will be hard-pressed to win that game.

Re: Other Games of Interest in Week 7 - Hurlburt88 - 10-15-2017

Some good points, OF.  Much football to be played, and our defense faces a brobdingnagian test against UW plus WSU and Cal will be fully prepared.  And of course ND sports a very solid running game.  So here's to Little & Love getting healthy, and the defense progressing!

The real Pillsbury dough boys are the UCLA bruins.

I mean if you think we had trouble with the run, UCLA is operating at historically bad levels.

agota believe this is mora’s last season.

I remember reading that Mora has a brobdingnagian buy-out that the author felt (note use of past tense) made it unlikely he would be terminated this year.  With the current performance and Rosen leaving (assumed) feels like no better time than now to press the reset button.

UCLA has a history of ridiculous buyouts.  Alford's was over $10 million.  Mora's is $14.76 million.  No lie:

I get you're being sarcastic, but... for what it's worth some SC fans seem to feel he's been rushing his players back too quickly from injury.

Poor Jim Mora.  In addition to his paltry severance terms, Mora is going to have such a hard time making his $930K/year in performance-based bonuses!  These are based on such comically unachievable objectives as the following:
- achieving a Graduation Success Rate of 56% (can they set the bar a little lower?!) ($25K/season)
- winning 6 games (?!) ($10K)
- appearing in the CCG ($50K)
- winning the CCG ($50K)
- winning PAC-12 Coach of the Year ($50K)
- winning National Coach of the Year ($100K)
- appearing in any Bowl game ($40K)
- appearing in an NY6 Bowl game ($100K)
- appearing in the CFB Playoff ($100K)
- appearing in the CFB Championship game ($150K)
- winning the CFB Championship game ($200K)

Poor, poor Jim Mora.  So unfair to him!  His agent should be mocked and ridiculed for doing this awful contract extension on the heels of UCLA's exhilarating and immensely well coached 8-5 season in 2015!

Seriously, as a State taxpayer that may at some point have kids in the UC system, and as a Stanford football fan, I move that UCLA be forced to ride out the contract rather than pay Mora 80% of his remaining comp, pay severance to Mora's assistants, pay a search firm, and pay the new coach.

Lots of UCLA fans seem to expect that your idea of forcing them to ride it out is exactly what is going to happen. I have no idea myself, but it seems that unless you have a real good candidate already committed to take the job, it is probable that no change will be made because the cost-benefit ratio would not be clear.

I would assume it is at least partially a question of how badly the UCLA movers and shakers who would have to come up with the money want him out.
I wonder if Chip Kelly is on the their radar screen.

Yeah, you'd think there are plenty of well-heeled UCLA fans. Whether they'd be moved to stump up the cash, well...
