The most underrated center fielder ever was Curt Flood. He made the best catch I ever saw in right center at Seals Stadium in 1959. Just a natural. I've got a great Flood-Feuerbach story Bobbbbb for next time I see you.

Thats a duo. Cant wait

He's an average starting center fielder in the field, had a career year last year with .318/.387/.482/.869, career average is .275/.336/.403/.739 and now we don't have to play Duggar (no offense to him) and we got him for $3 million and we're under the cap.
This is a smokin' hot deal. We have bona fide major leaguers, journeymen at worst, at every position. Every player has some significant upside, either at bat or in the field. I read that before the Jackson acquisition, the Giants were considered most likely for the #2 wild card.
A lot of things have to go right, of course. But I think we're in a very good position. The pitching has to hold together, but the defense will be way above average. We're very strong up the middle with Posey, Panik, Crawford and Jackson -- three terrific fielders and an average fielder. Belt fields his position well, as does Longoria. For a left fielder, Pence is actually excellent. Hopefully, McCutchen will get the hang of RF quickly.
I took last year's batting results from the eight starters. i figured an average of 132 games each, 543 plate appearances, 482 formal at bats, 133 hits, leading to a .275 batting average from the starters. They also averaged 28 doubles, three triples and 15 home runs each, with 51 walks and 91 strikeouts. Average line, .275/.348/.442/.790.
Figure Hernandez, Parker, Tomlinson, Slater and Hundley to round out the field players.Â
Starters Bumgarner, Cueto, Samardzija, Stratton (yes, #4), and maybe Blach. Strickland, Melancon, Smith, Gearrin, Dyson in the pen. See if Osich, Okert or Law can get it together. Make room for 1-2 training camp wonders.
And that, my friends, is a contender.Â

Mick,
All of the articles I have read about the Jackson acquisition indicate that SF sees him as a fourth outfielder/platoon player in CF (with Duggar). I would suggest that Duggar will make the squad in lieu of Slater who has at least one option left. Parker and Pence in left, Jackson and Duggar in center and Cutch in right. That squeezes Hernandez who may be dropped in favor of another IF.Â

It wouldn't break my heart to see Hernandez get dropped. He is an above-average fielder, and a very below-average hitter. An AAAA player, and frankly, so is Jarrett Parker.Â
As for Duggar vs. Jackson vs. Slater -- my opinion is that Duggar is considerably in back of both. He struggled, a lot, with hitting at AA. And until he was hurt, Slater was having a very strong year at the MLB level. He is clearly a corner outfielder, but Jackson had a career year last year. He should be the starting outfielder. Oh Well.

Id add Gary Maddux. Made it look so easy defensively. And a decent stick.

So adding Jackson changes things significantly. Im think Hernandez is now in trouble. Duggar gives them a left handed bat that is a plus plus outfielder. I could see him in a quasi platoon with Jackson. Slaters odds improve in my mind. I dont like Parker. Im hoping the Giants trade him for a 53rd round graft choice and a box of Cheerios. Williamson is not on the radar anymore.
Heres a question: what if Pablo comes to camp in shape? Hes cheap as Boston pays the salary. Has some power and can back up both corners. Gives them a left handed bat off the bench. Which would improve Slaters chances to stick.

Hey Mick, no need for graft with a 53rd rounder.

Two-thirds of the earth is covered by water, the other one-third is covered by Gary Maddox - Harry Kalas, Philadelphia Phillies broadcaster.Â
Yep. The guy was an amazing defensive outfielder - eight consecutive Gold Gloves.
Re: OT: Giants outfield -

Plus Maddox a Vietnam Vet.Â
Re: OT: Giants outfield -
Phogge - 01-24-2018
Maddox was extremely impressive running first to third. With the immense Afro his cap was off by stride 2. I believe Willie Davis was the fastest ever first to third but Maddox must have been very close.
Horace made two big mistakes (actually many more). Maddox for Montanez and letting Gary Mathews go. Gaylord Perry for Sam McDowell probably dwarfed them all. An era of doom and gloom hung over the Giants until '82.

Those trades were pathetic
Montanez with his snap catch at 1B was fun though. That was the year wife and I went to almost half the games.Â

Geez, you guys forgot Cepeda for Sadecki.......
Re: OT: Giants outfield -

That was Chub Feeney's fault. So was getting rid of Bill White for nobody and Felipe for Bob Shaw.

Sad Sam Jones was hardly a nobody.  One of my all time Favs.
While was going to play only withMcCovey in LF and Cepeda at 3B

Ok my trivia question:Â name the player involved in two awful Giants trades of the early seventies. He was acquired in one and traded in the other.
