There’s a lot of borderline and outright fraud even in the testing business.  Lots of running tests that weren’t ordered and setting up in rural hospitals because of favorable reimbursements, even if there is little serving the rural hospital.

Quote:Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes, set to be sentenced Friday, should go to prison for 15 years and be on the hook to pay hundreds of millions of dollars back to the investors she defrauded, federal prosecutors argue in a blistering sentencing memo.

I think this is pretty close to what prosecutors requested. I feel bad for her child (she’s pregnant with her second), who will spend their first ten years of life with their mom in prison.

She’s engaged in some pretty calculating and bad conduct. Appears she got pregnant to try to influence the verdict/sentence while knowing she was going to jail. Terrible situation for the kid, but it’s unclear to me the kid will be in a worse position with this mother in jail. The personality defects might well cause her to be a horrific mother.

The very thought occurred to me (both that her pregnancy might be an attempt for leniency and that, sadly, the child may be better of with mom in prison).

Speaking as the son of a narcissistic, sociopathic whack job of a parent, I think her child is much better off being raised by someone else.

I believe she has one child already, which was conceived just before the start of her trial, now a second one, good lord some people really know how to make life difficult for others.

I was way off in guessing that she would spend about a year in prison, if even that.

Between the  Federal Sentencing Guidelines and the need to send a message, she was going to get a stiff sentence.  Figure she will go to a Club Fed….

I suspect they might have originally considered Victorville down by LA, which has two men's prisons, and a women's minimum-security prison. But the Bureau of Prisons will probably put her in Dublin to keep her in proximity to her child(ren) -- same place that Laurie Loughlin and Felicity Huffman served.  BoP also has a MINT (Mothers and Infants Together) program which allows felons who give birth to stay in a re-entry residential center with their child -- for up to three months, then it's back to prison. But the nearest MINT facility is in Phoenix.

That’s … very polite.

For an English class in college on the Femme Fatale in Literature (one of which was Roxie Hart of "Chicago"), my daughter wrote a term paper on Holmes as a modern-day femme fatale. The teacher decided to include Holmes in next-year's course.

Judge Davila has ordered Holmes to be held in prison while appealing her case. Davila also ruled that she and Bulwani are jointly liable for restitution of $452M to investors, with Murdoch at the top of the list.

Holmes has to be held accountable for her crimes.  However I'm reluctant to separate a mother from very young children unless there is no other alternative.  Some people might speculate Holmes would not be a good mother.  I haven't read anything to support that.  The reports I've seen say she is a good mother.  The children should not suffer because of a parent's mistakes.

Some speculate that she had the kids for leniency. Also, I think one of the prisons has a facility for inmates with young children. . . .

RE: Theranos' Elizabeth Holmes guilty - gailtate - 05-17-2023

I knew a guy whose mother became a nun. True story. He mused that he wanted a license plate that said "MASANUN". His wife, who went to Stanford biz school, suggested "MASANUT" (to my knowledge the plate was never produced). Maybe Liz's kid would agree with the "NUT" choice someday.
